Dabo said a few years ago that if players ever get paid he might just quit coaching. Then the COVID year happened and the transfer / eligibility rules being modified. Then NIL happened, which was a blow to Clemson and a lot of similar programs that had a very active booster network with cash for under-the-table buying of talent (agriculture & other occupations) but isn't in a large market with a huge economy & big businesses for sponsorship opportunities. Dabo hasn't worked the transfer portal & the economics of how to acquire talent changed to their detriment. Throw in that the Vols & Noles are back so recruiting GA & FL is much tougher than it was. I'd be concerned if I was a Clemson fan.

That last sentence has always felt true.

Someone had mentioned Pitt as one of JT's transfers, and that was where I mentioned Slovis went to Pitt, but he was the one that took over at USC when JT tore his ACL so they probably just got USC confusion.
That was me. I posted the bad info (with help from beer). I got JT at Pitt confused with Slovis.

My bad fellas.

It's a lot easier to win battles for talent when you are part of a limited group of schools willing to pay them under the table then when everyone can pay players legally. Too bad the rules didn't change sooner since I think the P12 is one of the major beneficiaries of now having an even playing field to get players.

Yep. That's where location would have come into play, too. If you can make just as much money spending 3-5 years on Pac-12 campuses as you can in some sh!thole truck stop town, where you gonna go?
