A new college season is upon us but despite NIL and unlimited transfer rules some things always stay the same.
Nebraska loses close games and the SEC doesn’t leave the south.
This week starts with a quality game on Thursday with B12 West Virginia visiting Pittsburgh (12) along with a big lineup of P5 powers looking to pad their records and get some work in against guys in different uniforms before being challenged.
A couple of other Thursday games of some interest have B1G Purdue hosting Paterno’s Pedos from Penn State who are in an unusual position of being unranked starting the season.
Having an embarrassing CU on their schedule wasn’t enough for Minnesota, they arranged to open their season against New Mexico State who is already competing for worst BCS team with a loss to Nevada.
Friday other than the CU game we have a bunch of mediocre games. Notable among the bad teams is Kansas hoping to get at least one win by playing Tennessee Tech which only won 3 games last year at FCS, lose this one and they will be reaching new depths even for them.
Saturday surprises with some games that could have playoff implications.
The biggest game of the weekend has the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (5) not to be confused with the Cowering Cornhuskers at Ohio State (2) battling the Buckeyes. Good chance that one of these teams is in the final four.
The PAC12 has been left out of the playoff in recent years. The two teams with the best chance to break that streak travel to SEC land.
How much does National Champ Georgia (3) have left after filling the NFL draft. Oregon (11)gets to find out in the dome in Atlanta (which in SEC talk is a neutral site.) Utah (7) is headed to Gator country to play Florida.
If the PAC is hoping for a playoff slot they need to win one of these two games.
The only other match of top 25 teams has Cincinnati (23) at Arkansas (19.)
Most of the other PAC12 games should be mismatches as are many of the games nationally this week as teams pad their schedules and bank accounts.
One of those mismatches involves the Sheep going to the slaughter at a Michigan (8) program that has playoff aspirations as well. Michigan plays in front of 108,000 people each home game, CSU plays in front of that many in a whole home season some years.
Air Force opens against FCS Northern Iowa, Wyoming (0-1) tries to get back in the win column hosting Tulsa and New Mexico brings in the mighty FCS Maine Black Bears.
Speaking of FCS schools, how spectacular would the meltdown be if Scott Frost and the Creamed Corn (0- and counting) managed to lose to visiting FCS North Dakota?
Local smaller schools get going as well.
This week should be one of the highlights of the season for Northern Colorado. Eddie Mac and the Bears get to start the season against Houston Baptist, a team UNC beat last year for one of their 3 wins and a team that every other team beat as well, going winless. UNC had a reported 26 players either transfer or quit in the off season. Bears fans are hoping that in addition to bringing in his sons at QB and OC he can recruit at least as well in Greeley as he did in his last job.
Local small college games start up on Thursday as well.
In a huge test Mines (4) travels to traditional power Grand Valley State (5). Mines brings back a lot of talent but will have a new coach as DC Brandon Moore was promoted to replace retiring HC Gregg Brandon.
Also on Thursday Mesa plays at William Jewell College.
Saturday has Western (17) at a tough West Texas A&M. CSU-Pueblo which out of the norm for them is unranked hosting Midwestern State of Texas (24)
