College football is back and opening week was everything we love about it. Battles that already have playoff implications, highly ranked teams getting upset, FBS teams losing to FCS schools and they managed to stretch it from Wednesday through Monday.
This week we have to wait until Friday to get action. No mid-week games.
Friday starts out another opportunity for Kansas to embarrass themselves. Coming off a hard -fought victory, an awe inspiring 17-14 win over the Coyotes of South Dakota they travel this week to what they probably expected to be an easy win over a Sun Belt team. Jokes on them, Coastal Carolina (1-0) is ranked #17 and likely to send them home on a new losing streak.
If you watch the late game you didn’t drink too much. That’s just surprisingly 2-0 UTEP playing on the blue turf of 0-1 Boise. Don’t let the records fool you, Boise is favored by almost 4 TDs.
Saturday has most of the ranked teams playing unranked, and in some cases very rank, opponents.
The exceptions include Oregon (12) visiting (3) Ohio State. Oregon was less than impressive beating Fresno last week while Ohio State had an easier time against a tough Minnesota team. The Ducks will need to step up their game this week to avoid being blown out.
In the other battle of top 25 programs we get a cross state rivalry that is usually hard fought even when the teams aren’t ranked. This time they both are with Iowa State (9) hosting Iowa (10.)
Most of the other ranked teams are playing what should be easy opponents. Exceptions include Washington (0-1) at Michigan (1-0,) and Texas (15) at Arkansas (1-0,) More on UW-Michigan later.
In typical SEC fashion Alabama (1) challenges themselves against FCS Mercer (Mercy? Have it on us.)
Big weekend for the PAC coming off UCLA upsetting SEC LSU. In addition to the earlier mentioned Washington game Utah (21) goes to Provo for their yearly battle with BYU (1-0.)
Game of interest could be Washington (0-1) at Michigan (1-0.) Jimmy Lake isn’t on the hot seat yet but losing at home to FCS Montana didn’t make Huskies fans happy and starting 0-2 isn’t what they expect. On the other side lots of discussion about Harbaugh’s future at Michigan. They have been going to bowls but he hasn’t been able to beat Ohio State, has struggled against the other top B1G teams, and lost a few against teams that Wolverine fans like to consider automatic wins. Losing this one certainly won’t decide his fate but could add some fuel to the fire under his chair.
Conference play gets started in earnest as well with Stanford (0-1) at USC (14.)
How bad is Arizona (0-1)? We should get a better idea after they host as solid MWC San Diego State (1-0.)
How dumb is Nebraska? They should be finally figuring out that they can’t beat the Buffaloes. Will they get confused and lose to Buffalo (1-0.) The Bulls aren’t the kind of team that the fuskers can count on beating anymore (but then who is?)
Most of the other programs that specialize in rape, abuse, and other assorted criminal activity in the name of winning football games all have lower division opponents this week.
Speaking of low, how much lower can the Sheep for CSU and the Dude go. They lost last week to FCS South Dakota State and the game wasn’t as close as the final 19 point margin.
This week they are somehow favored by a TD at home against Vanderbilt (0-1) Vandy is bad (really bad) but they are an SEC program. At this point it’s no guarantee that CSU could beat Gloria Vanderbilt much less Vanderbilt University.
Other local programs have Wyoming (1-0) at Northern Illinois (1-0) and a huge game for AFA (1-0) at Navy (0-1) in a game they consider more important than their conference games.
Northern Colorado goes back to playing FCS schools travelling to Houston Baptist (0-1.)
Most of our local D2 schools are now into the RMAC schedule. Mines is hosting New Mexico Highlands.
Pueblo takes one more week out of conference travelling to traditional D2 power Grand Valley State with an opportunity to ease some of the sting of last week’s loss to Texas A&M Commerce.
Mesa has the week off.
Edited to correct rankings.
