Is it basketball season yet? This week’s schedule includes a number of games that would be headliners in basketball including Duke-North Carolina and Kansas-Iowa State. Too bad that it is still football season and those fans get to face the grim reality of potential blowouts.
We do get what looks like a solid slate of games though this week.
Thursday night starts us off with what could be a very interesting game with Miami (2-2) at Virginia (2-2.) Both of these schools have been ranked at times this season and this game could have one team turning their season in the right direction and the other turning their fans against their coaches in disappointment.
Friday’s highlight is Iowa (5) at surprising Maryland (4-0) Iowa struggled last week to beat Colorado State (Who struggles against the sheep?) and Maryland hasn’t exactly played a challenging schedule with Howard, Illinois, and Kent State the past three weeks.
Saturday brings us some big top 25 battles with two huge ones in the SEC.
After years of being down Arkansas (8) has worked their way up the standings. Very few people expect them to stay unbeaten as they go to Georgia (2) but Georgia has had a habit of dropping a game they should win over the years.
Who is more talented than Georgia? Alabama (1) has their usual busload of future draft picks as they welcome in Ol’ Miss (12) who may find their luck ol’ missing this week.
Further down the standings in the SEC is Florida (10) at Kentucky (4-0) who has a surprising start until you see how unimpressive their schedule has been getting to this point.
Another game that may mean more to the coaches than to any final standings has two 3-1 teams facing off with Auburn (22) who’s fans don’t like being so far behind Bama at LSU who lost to the one quality opponent they played this year. Just a couple years ago Ed. Orgeron was a hero in the Bayou country but now with a drop off on the field and some serious scandals off it he may be standing on some slippery mud.
The Big XII this week gives us Baylor (21) at Oklahoma State (18). Always look forward to Baylor’s hope getting smashed down into the mud with their morals. Last time they played Oklahoma State they only lost 42-3 but in their normal fashion they probably are claiming they won.
Look out as well for Oklahoma (6) at Kansas State (3-1). On paper the Sooners should roll but they still haven’t figured out that playoff contenders are supposed to dominate games having barely slipped by (relatively) Nebraska and West Virginia in the past couple weeks.
The Big Ten has no top 25 matchups but does include a couple interesting games.
Wisconsin is 1-2 but their losses are to two top 10 teams. They host Michigan (14) which is undefeated but against a less than impressive schedule. A win here would help the Badgers get their season back on track.
Rutgers (3-1) welcomes Ohio State (11) who is likely to spend a lot of time visiting the end zone as Rutgers gets exposed.
We keep waiting for Notre Dame (9) to fall, this week could very well be it as Cincinnati (7) goes to South Bend and is favored.
Speaking of favored somehow the fuskers (2-3) are favored by double digits over Northwestern (2-2) in Stinkoln this week. This might be the last chance Frost and company have to see .500 this season and may very well be their last win this year and they start playing winning B1G teams next week.
When fusker fans were invited to join the Big Ten they didn’t realize what they were getting into. A lot of them thought they had been invited to a party with a select group of the cheerleaders.
Closer to home CSU won’t be beaten this week because they have a bye. They still lose though because they have another week to consider their future in college football obscurity.
PAC 12 schedule less than inspiring.
Most interesting game is likely Arizona State (3-1) at UCLA (20) looking to take the favorite position in the South division.
Oregon (4) can't afford to slip at Stanford (2-2.)
Wyoming gets a week off as well after barely escaping humiliation by pulling out a two point win against the worst FBS team in recent memory at UConn. Next week their 4-0 record goes on the line at AFA.
AFA (3-1) heads down I-25 to play a bad New Mexico (2-2) team.
At the local small colleges things get tougher for Northern Colorado (2-2) who are much improved but probably not ready to win at a strong Montana State (3-1) who has dominated their FCS opponents this year.
In the RMAC things continue to heat up.
Western, Mesa, and Mines all continue to be undefeated as is Pueblo in conference.
That situation will thin significantly this week as Western plays Mines in Golden and Mesa visits Pueblo. Both games are available on TV, Mines on KWGN2 and Pueblo on the RMAC Network which has production values only slightly below those of the PAC12 Network (and since it is a free stream may actually be seen by more viewers.)
