Outdoor track & field - 2021 regular season results and news (Buffs end regular season at an Air Force meet Friday, 5/7)

Preview for this weekend's meets, with the multi-eventers doing their 1st full competition of the season today and tomorrow, and most of the rest of the Buffs in action at the 2nd and last home meet of the season tomorrow and/ or Saturday. (Interesting to me that, while the women's heptathlon has a relatively large field from many schools, all 4 in the decathlon are Buffs (3 current Buffs and 1 assistant coach.)

The decathlon consists of all CU competitors with Nick Bianco, Davis Butte, Wyatt Rhoads and volunteer assistant coach Andrew Ghizzone.

For the men will have five athletes in the 3,000, five in the 400 and also compete in both relays. CU Football and track athletes Mark Perry and Dimitri Stanley will both join Chris Craig in 100 and Aaron McCoy leads a trio in the 400 hurdles while six different men compete in the four throws disciplines.

The meet Friday and Saturday is closed to the public. Family and friends of CU athletes are allowed to register through their athlete contacts to attend the meet and must maintain a 25-foot distance from athletes and wear a mask when in the facilities.

BOULDER – Colorado track and field put together six record book performances Saturday at Potts Field in the final day of the 2021 Colorado Invitational.

The quarter-milers were the story of the day, with and without hurdles. Things started out with a gutsy performance from Sage Hurta, winning the women's 400 in 54.84 despite starting without blocks. Her mark is good for sixth in school history. Directly behind her and close to a top-10 time was Abbey Glynn in 55.54.

It didn't take long to add another mark to the top-10 list as Ronald Sayles won the men's 400 in 46.37, good for eighth in school history. Tyler Williams was second in 46.81 and would've made the top-10 list had Sayles not bumped him out.

Not to be outdone, the 400 hurdlers took to the track and Eriana Henderson threw down a 57.71 second quarter over hurdles to win the race. Her mark doesn't better her own second-place on the CU record books but was just .04 seconds from tying her performance at the NCAA Championships in 2019. Aaron McCoy followed suit with a 51.02 in the men's 400 hurdles to better his fifth-best mark in CU history. Both performances should ensure them spots in the NCAA West Preliminaries.

The men's hammer was the field highlight of the day as Dominique Williams tossed a bomb of 61.39 meters (201-5) to place second and become just the third male Buff to clear the 200-foot mark in the event. Tyler Sconce improved on his 10th-best mark in school history as well with a toss of 55.92 meters (183-5), good for sixth overall.

Another stellar performance for Colorado came from Micaela Degenero who won the women's 800 in 2:07.79, good for 10th in CU history. She joined forces with Rachel McArthur, Annie Hill and Hurta to close the meet with a women's distance 4x400. Degenero opened in 57.7, followed by a 57-second split from McArthur who placed second in the steeplechase earlier. Hill went around in around 59 seconds, then Hurta closed in an astonishing 53.9 seconds.

Another event winner today for Colorado was Mark Perry in the men's 100 in 10.65 seconds, followed closely by Dimitri Stanley in second in 10.85.

Colorado returns to action next week at Colorado School of Mines.

GOLDEN – The University of Colorado track and field thrower Henry Carlson took the title in the javelin at the Kit Mayer Classic here Sunday afternoon.

Carlson had the event won on the second throw of competition but went for the record books and succeeded on his final toss of competition with a throw of 56.40 meters (185-0). That mark is good for seventh in CU history after the javelin implement change that occurred in 1983. He is 12th overall in CU history in the event. Ryan Ganson finished third and Lars Atkinson finished sixth in the event.

The other victory for the Buffs came in the women's 400 hurdles with Reese Renz dominating the competition with a time of 62.25 seconds. In the men's hurdles, Garrett Nelson finished second in 53.32 seconds. Kellen Monestime finished in 54.51 seconds for fourth.

The sprints and hurdle crew will head to LSU to while the distance squad will send eight distance athletes to Oregon. The majority of the athletes will compete at CSU in the Glenn Morris Multi Thursday and Friday followed by the Jack Christiansen Invite Saturday. The sprinters and hurdlers heading to LSU consist of Tamia Badal, Jaida Drame, Abbey Glynn, Eriana Henderson, Reese Renz and Valerie Welch for the women. All of the women are entered either an open 400 or 400 hurdle, and they will run a 4x4 as well. The men's crew is Chris Craig, Ian Gilmore, Kellen Monestime, Garrett Nelson, Ronald Sayles, Kendal Smith and Tyler Williams. Like the women, most are in a form of a 400 except Craig who will run the two shorter sprints. The men are also running a 4x4.

The distance crew consists of Jonathon Horton, Josh Ramos and Eduardo Herrera for the men in the 800, though Herrera is also entered in the 1,500. Ethan Powell and Ryan Robinson will run the 5,000. Rachel McArthur, Micaela Degenero and Madie Boreman are all entered in the 800 and 1,500 while Boreman is also entered in the steeplechase.

Starting out the week in the multi will be Avery McMullen, Jada Green, Kara Lucyk, Elise Gillett and Kylee Harr in the heptathlon while Wyatt Rhoads will be the lone competitor in the men's decathlon. The Buffs will also compete everyone in the jumps and throws while a dozen or so men and women will be in distance events ranging from the 800 to the steeplechase.

Article after yesterday's action.

(GREAT to see Madie Boreman with such a GREAT performance (#2 time in the NCAA so far this season (Per TFRRS) and an Olympic Trials qualifying time) after years of, I believe, dealing with various injuries much of the time.)

Direct link - https://cubuffs.com/news/2021/4/23/...records-fast-time-in-steeplechase-return.aspx

"
EUGENE – Colorado track and field senior Madie Boreman made her long awaited return to form in the women's steeplechase Friday evening at the Oregon Relays.

The senior ran 9:48.09, just a second and a half off her time that she ran when she finished second at the NCAAs in 2017. In her first steeplechase since 2017, Boreman finished second behind CU alum Val Constien who ran 9:42.32. Boreman's time is fourth in the nation and an Olympic Trials qualifying mark for both women.

Eduardo Herrera led the men's team today as he won the men's 1,500 invitational in 3:43.32, the second-fastest time that he has run in his career. The women also showed well in the event with Rachel McArthur finishing second in 4:16.18 which is top-25 in the nation. Micaela Degenero also ran a top-25 time at 4:16.50 to finish third overall.
...

Colorado has a lot of Buffs in action tomorrow at the LSU Alumni Gold for the sprints and hurdles, Oregon Relays and USATF Grand Prix for the distance athletes and the Jack Christiansen Invite for a mass amount of CU athletes at CSU.

I'd ready posted this in the Pro thread, but since she is a current Buff, just copying and pasting the below after Sage Hurta's GOOD-GREAT run today that easily gives her the fastest time in the NCAA this season. (Note- even in the last full season (2019), her time would have been the fastest qualifying time by over 3-1/2 seconds.):

"
Sage Hurta finishes 8th in 4:08.38, which will EASILY become the fastest NCAA time so far this season (The fastest time showing on TFRRS so far is a 4:12.38 run by an Arkansas Razorback)! That time, a PR for her, will also move her up to 4th in the Buff record book, ahead of Buff great Mary Decker, and behind only Jenny Simpson (her record is also still the NCAA record), Olympic medalist and World Championship gold record holder (in the steeplechase) Emma Coburn, and the aforementioned Dani Jones. (Per the below tweet, her time also ties for the fastest in the NCAA EVER to be ran in April.)

"
______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Also wanted to mention, in a race run soon after Ms. Hurta's, that Rachel McArther had a solid race on national TV, going down in distance (I believe) and still finishing 3rd in the 800M in 2:06.68. (That time slots in as the #20 time in the NCAA Western Region this season, but looks to be borderline as to actually qualify by the time NCAA preliminary selection time. (in 2019, the 32nd fastest time in the West was 2:06.09.) With her holding SAFE NCAA qualifying times already in the 1500M and 5000M, I assume it will be one or both of those distances she'll be concentrating on when Championship Season begins with Pac 12's the middle of next month.)

EUGENE – The Colorado track and field women put on a show here Saturday afternoon in the Oregon Relays and USATF Grand Prix with three marks in the record books.

The story of the day comes from the women's 1,500 where Sage Hurta became the 11th-fastest runner in collegiate history after her 4:08.38 finish for eighth. Her time ties Jenny Simpson's collegiate mark on the same date 12 years ago as the fastest women's 1,500 run in the month of April for a collegiate runner. Her mark moves her into fourth in school history.

The other amazing race for the CU women came in the women's 800 collegiate invite at the Grand Prix as Rachel McArthur finished third in 2:06.68 and Micaela Degenero finished fifth in 2:07.18. The women are now eighth and 10th in the CU record books in the event, respectfully. Madie Boreman added to the CU women's 800 day with a win in the Oregon Relays section at 2:08.60, giving CU four women under 2:09 this season in the 800.

Across the nation at the LSU Alumni Gold Meet, Abbey Glynn finished eighth in the women's 400 in 54.50, good for fifth in school history. Her teammate Jaida Drame was in 10th in 55.86. Both women helped the 4x400 finish seventh in 3:43.12.

Eriana Henderson had a strong day to lead CU in the 400 hurdles in 58.75, good for eight. Valerie Welch finished 12th in 61.69 while Tamia Badal was 13th in 62.03 and Reese Renze finished 15th in 63.75. The men had Kellen Monestime run 52.85 in the 400 hurdles and Garrett Nelson run 53.09.

The men's 4x400 team finished sixth in 3:10.86. Four Buffs ran in the open quarter led by Ronald Sayles in 46.53, Tyler Williams in 46.93, Kendal Smith in 47.59 and Ian Gilmore in 47.79.

Colorado competed the majority of its athletes at the Jack Christiansen Invitational at CSU. The Buffs won three events as they swept the 1,500 and took the men's 800. Abby Nichols won the women's 1,500 in 4:27.71, while Noah Hibbard took the men's title in 3:54.71. Ryan Lindrud won the men's 800 in 1:51.66, just three-hundredths of a second off of Jonathan Horton's 1:50.63 that he ran today at the Grand Prix.

In the field events, Tyler Sconce paved the way with a third-place finish in the men's hammer throw. His mark of 58.29 meters (191-03) which is good for seventh in school history.

Colorado returns to action at the West Coast Relays at Fresno State with a large squad traveling.

A large contingent of Buffs (maybe 30 or so?) are scheduled to be in Fresno for a meet this Friday. Looks like some of the distance runners will want to have their coffee-strategy planned (if they drink it), as the 10000M races are scheduled for pretty early morning starts, while the last race of the meet isn't scheduled to begin until 10:45 PM Fresno time/ 11:45 PM MT. (Fresno is forecasted to have a 96 degree high Friday, so the scheduling is to minimize, to the extent possible, any heat effect that could both endanger and slow down the runners, especially those running in the longer distances.)

With only ~2 weeks until Pac 12's, assume everyone will be wanting to start rounding into shape and if possible improve their qualifying marks.

I posted something about this yesterday in the general Covid-19 and sports thread (https://www.allbuffs.com/threads/covid-19-and-buff-olympic-sports.145119/page-2), but since it it directly related to track and field, wanted to also note it here:
  • I assume In line with NCAA general recommendations from last year to reduce championships size due to the pandemic, track and field had announced it was reducing the # of athletes who could qualify for the NCAA Regional meets to 32 competitors per region per event rather than the normal 48. Now, per the below tweet from the Coaches' Association, looks like they may have decided to change course and allow the normal 48 to compete.
  • In what also sounds like a change, which I believe is not only Covid-19 related (although I'd assume it will help with only one gender competing and at the track each day), regionals are going to be held over 4 days and, like with the Finals, will be split between designated men's and women's days, with each competing on 2 of the 4 days. (As I type this, the Buff schedule currently has regionals at only 3 days (May 27-29).)

Edit- here's a link to a release from the NCAA confirming the changes noted above-

________________________________________________________________________________________

Back to the action ON the track, wanted to mention the 1st change noted above has probably born immediate fruit for a Buff as, in her race, RS- freshman Emily Covert recently completed her 10000M race in 5th place, running 34:11.88, which probably MAY NOW*** be enough to qualify her for regionals.
(***Looking back at the 2 most recent full track seasons, the 48th fastest time in the Western region in 2019 ended up being 34:28, while the 32nd fastest was 33:56. And, in 2018, the 48th fastest was 34:35, while the 32nd fastest was 34:10.)

In any case, nice result for her, especially as a younger runner, in an event where experience (and MANY years of collegiate-level high mileage training) is key, with the 4 runners finishing ahead of her all being juniors or seniors.

Unofficially, looks like sophomore/ RS freshman multi-event'er Jada Green had a HUGE throw in the javelin this afternoon, improving her CU best of 138-09 (which was a CU 10th best mark) from last month to 165' 4", which if I'm not missing something will end up moving her to 3rd all-time for a Buff. (In the last full (2019), that mark would have been 19th best in the west, so should easily qualify her for regionals this season.)

Unofficially, looks like ANOTHER top result, again for a sophomore/ RS freshman multi-even Buff, this time Avery McMullin, who also moves up to 3rd all-time in the Buff record books with a 20' 4½" long jump. (That mark would have tied for 28th best in the West back In the last full (2019) season, so should qualify her for regionals this season in that event.)

Edit- didn't notice until seeing the tweet in the below post that, due to the wind being above allowable limits, I don't believe she will OFFICIALLY go higher in the CU record books (She's already #6 from a jump last month), but obviously still a great jump!

Looks like the distance running squad who are scheduled in the later races are having an adventure this evening.

FRESNO – Despite a large delay of nearly four hours when the track lost power and lights, Colorado track and field senior Eduardo Herrera broke the men's 1,500-meter run school record at the West Coast Relays late Friday night.

In what could be argued one of the fastest NCAA 1,500-meter run in the month of April ever, Herrera finished sixth as Sam Prakel for Adidas took the win in 3:36.86. In total there were nine collegiate men that finished under 3:40.

The women's 1,500 invite was another one that changed the record books for the Buffs as Micaela Degenero finished fourth in 4:12.73 and Madie Boreman finished seventh in 4:14.19. Degenero's mark is good for ninth in CU history and Boreman's time is 11th. The CU women now have four runners under 4:17 in the 1,500 this season.

The wildest move in the record books belongs to CU freshman heptathlete Jada Green who finished second in the javelin with a mark of 50.39 meters (165-4). Her mark is third overall in CU history and second since the implement change in 1983. What's even more impressive is the fact that her previous season best was her first time throwing the javelin at 42.30 meters (138-9), marking her down for a 26-foot, 7-inch improvement on her very first throw of the competition.

Avery McMullen picked up a win in the women's long jump with a wind-aided jump of 6.21 meters (20-4.5). That mark would've been good for third in CU history, which she marked on her third jump of the day with a 3.6 meter per second tailwind (NCAA allowed tailwind is 2.0 m/s). She also had a jump at 6.08 meters (19-11.5) that was barely above the legal limit, but her final jump of 5.82 meters (19-1.25) had zero wind.

Senior Eriana Henderson also had a stellar day with a two-tenth personal best in the 100 hurdles to finish third ahead of McMullen who cracked the 14-second barrier at 13.94 seconds. Henderson went on to win the 400 hurdles in 58.25, her third trip under 59-seconds this season.

To close out the late night, John Dressel finished second in the men's 5,000-meter invite in 13:37.30, while Abby Nichols finished 10th in the women's invite in 15:46.53. The night finished off shortly after 11:30 p.m. PT with the women's steeplechase running 22 athletes where Alisa Meraz-Fishbein finished 11th in 10:28.33 and Whitney Valenti finished 17th in 10:47.30.

Colorado concludes the regular season next week at the Air Force Twilight on Friday.
