Heading into the teams' busiest day of a very busy week, a look back at yesterday's generally VERY good results.

"
CALIFORNIA – Action continued Thursday for the University of Colorado track and field program at three different meets in southern California, highlighted by four CU top-10 marks.

The day started with the heptathlon and decathlon athletes finishing up their respected events. Avery McMullen led the way with a third-place finish at the Mt. SAC Relays heptathlon with a score of 5663. Her mark moves her up to third in CU history after she had a great second day with a 5.87 meter (19-3.25) long jump, along with a huge personal best in the javelin and a near personal best in the 800. Her mark in the first mark over 5600 points in 24 years.

In the same competition, Jada Green finished with 5328 points, good for 10th in CU history. She had a strong performance in the javelin at 43.90 meters (144-0) and closed in a 2:28.74 800.

At the Bryan Clay multi, Allie Routledge finished her heptathlon with 4739 points while Elise Gillett finished in 4068. Nick Bianco scored 6886 points in the men's decathlon, just 11 points from cracking the top-10 in school history. John Swabik finished with 5303 points.

The night ramped up with the distance athletes in action. Madie Boreman finished third overall in the Mt. SAC Elite Women's Steeplechase competition in 9:46.80. The mark is less than half a second off her fifth-best time in CU history that she set in her NCAA runner-up finish back in 2017. Boreman continues her improvement streak, running faster in every NCAA steeplechase dating back to the Pac-12 Championships last season.

The Buffs switched back to Bryan Clay for the 5,000-meter distance festival. Eduardo Herrera led the way running 13:20.30 to finish third in his heat. It was a four-second personal best and closes him within two seconds of the school record set by Brent Vaughn in 2008.

Also in the men's main heat, Charlie Sweeney ran 13:50.78, a mark that will be on the brink of qualifying for regionals this season.

In the women's main heat, Emily Covert led most of the way like Herrera did. Covert finished in 15:40.40 to move into seventh in CU history after finishing fifth in her heat. She was joined by India Johnson who ran 15:55.08.

Action continued with Austin Vancil running sub-14 in the third heat at 13:57.32. He finished seventh in his heat with teammate Alec Hornecker finishing 20th.

The night concluded with Kyla Christopher-Moody running 16:30.75 in the final heat to finish 10th. Teammate Annie Hill finished 17th in 16:52.40.

The Buffs are in full swing tomorrow with athletes in sprints, hurdles, distance, jumps and throws.

The Buffs, led by Abby Nichols, having another NICE day in California yesterday.

CALIFORNIA – Just a day after losing her NCAA-leading mark, Colorado track and field senior Abby Nichols reclaimed the lead with an exclamation, posting the second-fastest time in CU history and eighth-best time in NCAA history.

Nichols was the top collegiate runner at the Mt. SAC Relays Invitational women's 5,000-meter run, finishing fifth overall in 15:15.95. Her mark trails only the NCAA record and CU school record set by Jenny Simpson and she slides into eighth in NCAA history behind BYU's Whittni Morgan and ahead of BYU's Courtney Wayment, the defending NCAA cross country champion. Alabama's Mercy Chelangat ran 15:17.28 to push Wayment out of the top-10 in NCAA history and leave the Buffs as the only school with two representatives in the top-10.

Nichols ran her first 3,000-meters in 9:14.65, which would've placed her third in CU history in the women's 3,000 behind a pair of Olympians in Kara Grgas-Wheeler and Shayne Wille. In her final lap she dropped a 65.84 second lap, the second-fastest lap record tonight behind 2020 Olympian Karissa Schweizer who won the race in 15:02.77. Nichols was so extraordinary she covered her last 1600-meters in 4:48.

Over at the Bryan Clay Invitational, the rest of the distance squad took to the track in the 1,500-meter run. Andrew Kent was the top male runner in 3:42.06 seconds, good for ninth in CU history. Closely behind him was Noah Hibbard in 3:42.68. Both marks should be good enough to make it the regionals.

On the women's side, Micaela DeGenero opened her outdoor season in 4:15.96, finishing ninth overall in the invitational section. Gabrielle Orie had a strong performance as well running 4:22.96.

Earlier in the day the 400-meter athletes showed out at the Mt. SAC Relays. Grace Jenkins ran 54.73 to move to seventh in CU history in the event while Tyler Williams ran 46.24 to move to eighth on the men's side. In the 400 hurdles, Abbey Glynn ran a personal best 57.82 to improve on her fourth-best mark in CU history.

Tomorrow action will shift to the Beach Invitational for most of the team, but the men and women's 4x400-meter relays were shifted to the Mt. SAC Elite Invitational 4x400-meter relays Saturday evening. The teams will face the top competition in the country at the collegiate level, as well as face off with three USATF relay teams.

NEW ORLEANS – The University of Colorado women's track and field program leaped 19 spots over the weekend to be ranked 14th in the NCAA, the United State Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Monday.

The women's squad has hovered around the 30s all season, but after a strong weekend that included three top-eight marks in the NCAA, CU made the largest leap into the top-25 of the week.

The ranking, which is assigned points based on individual placement in the NCAA, nearly doubled their points total to 105.59 after having only 55.22 TFRI points the week before. The jump is large thanks to standout performance from Madie Boreman and Emily Covert.

A little prelim info on next weekend's Fresno State Invite, which I assume will be the last major meet before Pac 12's for individuals and relay teams seeking to, among other things, improve their season bests for both Pac 12 seeding purposes, as well as NCAA regional qualifying. (GUESSING the Air Force Meet the next weekend will be more low key, esp. for the distance group.)

BOULDER – The University of Colorado track and field program heads to the Fresno State Invitational this Saturday in Fresno, Calif.

The Buffs currently have 24 athletes set to compete at the NCAA West Preliminaries in 30 events, as well as a pair of relays. There are five other athletes in the top-70 seeking a top-48 ranking, as well as a pair of athletes in Madie Boreman and Charlie Sweeney in the top-70 looking to add another event to their already NCAA West bound schedule.

Of all the athletes, heptathlete Avery McMullen leads the way ranked in the top-48 in three individual events while already NCAA Championships bound with a 10th ranking in the heptathlon. She is 13th in the NCAA West after her wind-aided 20-9 long jump last weekend, 33rd in the high jump and 48th in the 100 hurdles. This weekend she will compete in the 200-meter dash, long jump and 100 hurdles.

The main focus for the men is the 5,000-meter run where Andrew Kent will lead the way as he is already ranked 11th in the west. He and Eduardo Herrera, who is running the 1,500 along with Noah Hibbard, are the only men heading to prelims in the 5,000 at the end of May. The men will run Sweeney, Austin Vancil, Alec Hornecker, Jace Aschbrenner, Paxton Smith, Hunter Appleton, Brandon Fraser and Jake Derouin and all try to run better than 13:47, the current 48th-best mark in the west this season. Sweeney is currently 60th in the 5,000 while Appleton and Derouin are ranked top-70 in the 10,000.

For the women, the 1,500-meter run will be a main focus with Rachel McArthur and Madie Boreman looking to return to the NCAA Championships along with Abby Nichols, Carley Bennett and Anna Shults. McArthur has not competed this outdoor season, while Boreman and Nichols are already heading to the Preliminaries in the steeplechase and 5,000, respectfully.

The defending NCAA Mile National Champion Micaela DeGenero will compete this weekend in the 800. Also for the distance squad, Kaitlyn Barthell and Kyla Christopher-Moody will run the 5,000 while Gabrielle Orie, Alisa Meraz-Fishbein and Whitney Valenti will run the steeplechase.

Other Preliminaries hopeful include Grace Jenkins and Jaida Drame in the women's 400. They will compete this weekend in the event with Jenkins currently ranked 70th. Both women are on the 4x400-meter relay that is heading to preliminaries along with Abbey Glynn and Emma Pollak who are both set to compete in both the 400-meter hurdles and 4x400-meter relay at the prelims.

For the men's quarter-milers, Tyler Williams and Ian Gilmore will work on their speed in the 200, while Aaron McCoy, Garrett Nelson, Kellen Monestime and Eli Heitmann will all compete in the 400 hurdles. Williams is ranked highly in the open 400 in the west while McCoy and Nelson are in good standings in the hurdles. Monestime is currently ranked one spot out in the hurdles.

For the field events, Noah Bouchard is set to compete in the high jump and long jump this weekend, the first of which he is heading to prelims in. Dominique Williams and Tyler Sconce will compete in the hammer throw with Sconce on the edge with the 46th-best mark in the NCAA West. Allie Routledge will be the lone CU woman competing in the high jump but is one of three women heading to prelims in the event including Kylee Harr and McMullen.

Jada Green is currently set to compete at the end of May in the javelin and will compete this weekend in the event as well. She is also seeking a top-24 spot in the heptathlon in the NCAA for a ticket straight to the championships. She needs a few hundred points more than her best to head there and will work on the 200, 100 hurdles and javelin this weekend to prep for the Pac-12 Championships heptathlon.

The Buffs are closing out the outdoor season, with only the Air Force Twilight May 7 left on the schedule before the Pac-12 Championships.

"
FRESNO, Calif. – The University of Colorado track and field program picked up three wins and numerous NCAA Preliminaries-bound marks here Saturday at the Fresno State Invitational.

The women picked up a pair of wins from Madie Boreman and Abbey Glynn, while Eduardo Herrera led the men with a victory in the 1,500-meter run.

The 1,500 was the highlighted event for Colorado with Boreman winning the women's invitational section in 4:14.71. She edged out teammate Abby Nichols who finished second in 4:14.82. Rachel McArthur finished fifth in the race in 4:16.79, with all three women securing their spot at NCAA Preliminaries in the event. All three marks are top-18 in the NCAA West rankings, giving CU four women in the top-20.

Herrera gave the Buffs the sweep in the 1,500 invitational rounds with a win in the men's section in 3:39.58. The mark isn't better than his altitude converted mark of 3:39.11 which is still 12th in the west. Herrera is now NCAA-bound in the 1,500 and 5,000.

Another highlight was Abbey Glynn running under the 58-second barrier in the 400-meter hurdles, winning the meet in 57.97. Close behind was teammate Emma Pollak who finished third in 59.39. Both women are top-30 in the west thus far. They also were part of a pair of runner-up relays with the women's 4x100 finished second in 45.39 seconds, good for sixth in CU history. They closed the early part of the meet with a second place finish in the 4x4 where the team ran 3:37.75.

Defending mile national champion Micaela DeGenero added to her schedule at NCAA Preliminaries by running 2:04.91 in the women's 800-meter run to finish second. That mark will slide her into the top-15 in the west to go along with her top-20 mark in the 1,500.

The meet actually began Friday with the men and women's hammer throw where graduate student Dominique Williams broke the 64-meter mark again, this time with a toss of 64.31 meters (211-0). His throw is just three inches from the best that he put together at the Colorado Invitational and was good for second. He also became the second-farthest thrower ever in Fresno, breaking the previous stadium record along with Washington's Jayden White who won the event.

The Buffs had a pair of runner-up finishes with Noah Bouchard in the men's high jump finished second with a clearance of 2.09 meters (6-10.25) while Ryan Lindrud finished second in the 800 in 1:50.96.
