Pac-12 Media Day 7/24

PAC 12 offices and media should be in LA, the center of media in the conference footprint. Moving to a media outpost like Vegas makes no sense for the conference.
Property value and cost of living in LA are just as high as San Fran. It is only a 4hr drive from LA to Vegas. Save money by moving to Vegas.

Why does it matter where the media center for the conference is located? Nobody would know that it's currently in the Bay Area if it wasn't being discussed as a complete waste of money. LV is going to become a major sporting destination over the next few years. It already has the Pac 12 hoops tournament, it's going to have the football championship game, the Raiders are moving there next year with a brand new stadium being built, and I'd be willing to bet the CFP games will be there within 3-4 years. It's right in the middle of the footprint and is substantially cheaper than anywhere in CA.

Does it really matter, though? I don't see other conferences suffering any negative consequences for being HQ'd away from the HQ's of media companies. Being in the Bay Areas certainly hasn't led to the Pac-12 gaining anything on deals with Internet and technology giants for distribution or innovation.

So my conclusion is that cost containment is more important here. Every dollar saved is 8.5 cents that goes directly to CU's athletic department if it isn't spent on network infrastructure, technology & talent upgrades.

Where you do the production work matters very little, all of the media is transferred instantly electronically anyways.

LA has more talent availability but Vegas is close enough that it isn't an issue, getting talent from LA to the Bay area hasn't been an issue and with traffic that can be tougher, plus the expenses in the Bay area are higher.

For a network that wants to regional and national Vegas is actually easier in terms of bringing in potential advertisers or executive from the various carriers.

Cost of Living calculator:

Las Vegas salary of $80,000 has to increase to $202,964 in San Francisco to deliver the same standard of living.
The number for Los Angeles is $168,946. Phoenix is actually less, at $75,537.

However, taxes are not included in those numbers. Nevada has no personal income tax.

That's a huge difference on payroll.

Adding in savings on real estate, the savings are compounded.

Take football media days as a completely random example.

When your media days are hosted in a very expensive and often difficult city for reporters to get to, reporters and camera crews aren't clamoring to go there, and even if they were, it's pretty easy for management to tell them no.

But host your media days in a fun, easy and often inexpensive city for reporters to get to, they all want to go. They write and produce articles pumping up the conference, so that they have better arguments to make to their management for letting them go. Management has a harder time saying no, because it's cheaper, more convenient and "if I let several of my employees go, then I should probably go too - I could meet with some of the conference management and discuss ... " well, you see where this is going.

There are advantages to having offices in a convenient, inexpensive and fun place to travel to - and if operating costs are lower there too...

The only benefit to having the conference headquarters in San Fran is that some of the Schools are some what close by.

Vegas makes sense on so many levels. Financially speaking, should be one of the biggest priorities.

I can’t wait to tune into P12 media day,

When Mel Tucker rhetorically asks “Why not us?”; drink!

Each moment under the spotlight with Laviska must be savored. These next 150 days as a Buff are incredibly precious, recognizing that they may never come again.

This is the part of the Cinderella story where the pundits and skeptics expect CU to be holding a mop, cleaning up the floor of the division.

And the die-hard Buffs fans are drooling over another drubbing of CSU, a signature two in a row against Frosty the nubman, a long awaited return of the zoomies to Boulder on a perfect September game day.

Of course a conference schedule that rids CU of various monkeys - USC ever. UDub as a Pac12 member, 1st vs ASU on the road, 1st vs UCLA on the road since joining the conference, Arizona at home since 2011, back-to-back in Eugene, Tucker’s first against the Pirate, the Yoots, and staNford.

First P12 Championship victory

First bowl victory since 2004 Houston Bowl vs UTEP

It is a fact that CU has not been mathematically eliminated from its first Rose Bowl victory or CFB playoff birth.

And it starts soon.

Sko Buffs.

Thank god. I would prefer the cardinals stadium instead of LA but either one is better than the Bay.

Lol I’m assuming they couldn’t find an equity partner interested in their terms.
I just don't think it would solve anything. You are just taking money now but sacrificing money in the long run. If that partner isn't ESPN or Fox then it really isn't going to help distribution over the next couple of years anyways.

True, but that’s the reality the Pac 12 lives in. They wanted full ownership of their own network, stupidly thought people cared about anything other than football/basketball, and couldn’t get a deal done with the biggest cable/satellite company in the country. The schools need money now

Okay but you take money now and then in 2024 you are in the same exact position so it is pointless. The Pac-12 needed a partner to help with distribution and TV deals, not one to just give them cash.

The partner was supposed to help with with distribution and TV deals, not just give them cash and call it a day.
