Pac 12 Media Day (Kisima news inside)

I get the feeling he will enjoy them more when he can say, "Look out USC, we are coming for you this season, we are going to beat you, we are telling you now, and there is nothing you can do about it." I think not having a team that is ready for him to put in that position yet makes it an unpleasant task to have to get through.

I think you are right. I get the impression that losing eats at Embree. He doesn't like being in the position of trying to sugar coat something that he considers unacceptable. The media days are supposed to be all about getting people pumped up for the season and feeling good about themselves but Embree has been watching film of his team.

Hawk could go out there and spout some philisophical BS and try to make it seem like things weren't that bad because he had convinced himself that they weren't. Embree is honest to a fault and isn't going to sit there and smile while putting frosting on a turd.

I get the impression that Embree really hates these things. Would much rather be left alone to do is work on the football field. I bet the questions get old especially when they repeat like they do

It's kind of an awkward setup too. Nobody's really looked comfortable up there. They're hunched over on stools in a large, dark auditorium with 3 rows of reporters below them staring at their laptops. I can't believe they got asked about Utah, twice.

We didn't finish last last year, coming into the season off a win.

Not saying we likely wont finish last, but your comment doesn't really make sense.

How does it not make sense? We lost our starting QB, our starting RB, our RG was drafted into the NFL, our best player is already hurt, our MLB is coming back from a severe injury, our secondary is still wearing diapers.... This coming to a team that was shelled by UCLA, USC, Oregon, Stanford, Washington, and Arizona State.

I don't know if we will be last or not - but why shouldn't we be picked last? Cause we beat a Utah team that missed a bunch of FGs and was looking past us? Because there was an Arizona team that gave up on their coach and their season?

Because you said until they show signs of life, when they are coming into the season with signs of life for the first time in seven years.

I do think we finish 5th or 6th in the south, I don't have much hope for the season, mainly for the reasons you posted. Just disagree that we are not showing signs of life. It's going to be a long season. 4 wins

Here's a summary Embree could give:

Well, we return one DT, but word is we need two. We look to use 2-3 true freshmen here in the rotation.
We expect to play a true freshmen or two at corner again. We think we will be better there though because we don't expect to have to use RB's and WR's at CB.
I got two DE's, so both will play a lot. Hope they don't get hurt. Hope they both step it up and show they can be every down types at this level.
I got a couple safeties with some experience, but after that not much. We hope Orms can somehow piece together a season here. Nobody is behind him. He has yet to play this position at CU but he's a stud, when he's healthy.

I got a rookie QB who will see his first college action (this is always huge in CFB).
I got a RB who got some carries last year. Behind him, I got a walk-on and a trifecta of true frosh we are looking at.
I got a couple true frosh FBs who will try to learn the position quickly. One at least has played a game there before at the high school level.
At TE, we are good shape because we converted a SR Defensive Linemen to TE and he got a full spring to practice there. He's now a vet.

All in all, we have lost our QB, nearly all of our offensive production and playmaking capability. We will use freshmen in the two deep (if not start) at FB, X, Z, TE, RB on offense and at LT, RT, LDE, RDE, CB and perhaps a safety and another CB.

We do, however, return most of our specialists! And at least a couple of these freshmen were recruited by other BCS schools!

Realistically, we should win our first two games and every other game after that we will (and should) be the underdog for. But I suspect we will win a few of them and finish with 4-5 W's, an amazing feat given the above.

Breaking the road streak is great - but beating a mediocre Utah team isn't much of a sign for me - especially considering the week before was one of the worst displays of football that I'd seen in awhile.

They come out and win the first 3 games this season - like they should, even with the Fresno difficulties - then I would consider that a sign of life. Getting to a bowl game would be a sign of life.

I agree with most of what you are saying but I have to take issue with you saying UTAH was looking past CU. Why would they do that - it was the final game of the season, they certainly had not played so well that they were a sure thing. If UTAH had won they would of been in the championship game - it was senior day, it was at home, and they had a lot to play for. I do not agree they looked past CU. Utah is not that good and CU played well that day.

Well said, rep. Although I think we will be favored against Fresno, they are horrible. I think we lose the game, but I bet we're favored going in. One thing that could go in our favor for an upset or two is 8 of the 12 teams we play will be breaking in a new coach. It's hard to predict how programs will do under a first year coach.

Totally agree. This program is a year or two away from being competitive in the Pac 12. Can't be upset about being picked last

If we're favored in the Freso game it will only be becuase Oregon put up 60 against them the week before in Autzen.

Took this from the newest Media Story on Buffzone.

"Embree said the only member of the freshmen class who hasn't been cleared academically is defensive end Kisima Jagne. Embree said Jagne is waiting on a test score to determine his eligibility. He said if he is not cleared academically, Jagne could grayshirt this fall and join the program in January. He did not mention junior college as an option."

Sounds like all that hard work Kisima has been doing might pay off.

Why are you trying to discredit our wins from last year? This is the type of thing your supposed to say about a rival, not your own team. I'm one the most cynical people on here and I can't stand Embree and I wouldn't even do this. Your excuses aren't even good. Utah did miss some FG's but we thoroughly outplayed them nonetheless and there's no way you could have known that they were looking past us and the Arizona team that had "given up on there season" went on to win their final two games after playing us.

This comment by Embree was a plesant surprise.

Embree on Paul Richardson: "I'm a lot more optimistic than I was before. He's been progressing very rapidly. As he does more football movements, we'll have a better feel for if and when he'll be available. I don't think it's something that's out of the question."

Because he didn't pursue your boy Chris Martin?

Did anybody else notice that there were three members of the media who not only picked USC to win the south but also picked them to win the pac 12? I have no clue what that is based on but it's really odd given the way the rest of the poll played out.

Edit - sorry, ASU, not USC...

I think it is more weird that 3 people picked ASU to win the south.

Just call it like I see it. Maybe I just have a sour taste in my mouth after paying $150 to watch the thrashing at UW in person. Or the embarrassment of sitting in the stands watching the Ducks go up by 28 against us before I could even blink. Maybe it was the excitement of seeing us get blown off the field against UCLA. The blown coverage against WSU. The wtf is happening moments during the Hawaii game. Watching us take it on the chin against Ohio State. Maybe I'm tired because I actually felt some pride against USC cause we played them tough for a quarter before we got blasted out of Folsom - that's pathetic.

I'm glad we 'thoroughly' outplayed Utah - yet were barely able to hang on for the victory. I look forward to that becoming the rule, not the exception.

There were a few very bad calls that kept that score closer than the game actually was. ****ing Pac 12 refs...
