Pac 12 network / direct tv (PACN now on fuboTV streaming)

My thoughts exactly:

"The league responded by urging fans to tell their cable providers to add the national feed, or move it to a less-expensive tier.

But fans have grown tired of being asked to do the league's work yet again. And it often doesn't work. Just ask DirecTV subscribers.
...
A decade from now, as the way people watch sports continues to change and more cut the cable/satellite cord, will the Pac-12 be sitting pretty with 100-percent ownership?"

Let's hope so. I for one, however, am not going to wait a decade for the Pac-12 to figure this thing out.

This had better be sorted out by Labor day or the AD's should seriously consider voting to replace Scott.
Serious question. You think a new guy will come in and get a deal done with DTV ASAP because I think it will be more of the same.

Depends on the mandate the new commissioner is given when selected. If the AD's all want the deal done, they will select a person that will get it done.

If they wanted it done, they would tell Scott they wanted it done and take the lower price with DTV, Dish and cable. They clearly don't want that.

I'm not asserting that a new guy would come in and close a deal with DTV "ASAP". I am saying that due to Scott's failings as commissioner, not only are we not on directv, but the amount of eyes on our conference have actually dropped dramatically with the Dish and Cox regional news.

In addition to Scott being unable to negotiate a beneficial deal and also losing viewership in the process, he is currently generating a lot of bad press for the conference. Scott's lack of forethought in securing TV deals that would give the a premier conference premeire exposure probably cost the Pac a Heisman last year and has dramatically lowered the forecasted revenue shares for each institution. What will it cost us next year? A spot in the CFB playoff?

Scott may have poisoned the well with his original negotiating position and I could see a change being in order.

I'm not sure who's necessarily to blame, but there was a lot of bad blood reported between the DTV and P12 negotiating teams. When AT&T took over, my only question was "which negotiating team will lead the AT&T/DTV effort - AT&T's or DTV's?" And when Wilner reported that it was DTV's, I promptly gave up hope (even when DTV had the test channel up).

Until at least one side, but preferably both sides bring different people to the table, I don't think a deal will ever get done. The current people loath each other too much.

When hundreds of millions of dollars and millions of eyeballs are at stake, petty personal vendettas make no sense. Check your egos at the door, people.

Both sides are paid enough and should be professional enough to make the focus of carriage agreement negotiations about serving customers. P12 athletes deserve a broad stage in which to shine.

Scott's lack of forethought in securing TV deals

Don't let a little fact like this one get in your way....

SBNation May 4, 2011
The new Pac-12 TV deals are a wrap and this is a big one for everyone. At $3 billion over 12 years, the Pac-12 will rake in roughly $250 million per year in the largest TV deal for any conference in the country. That means each of the 12 member schools will pocket about $21 million annually when this deal begins in 2012-2013, a far cry from the current TV deal that nets the conference less than $60 million annually.

18 months ago all the Pac-10 knew was Tom Hansen and his incompetent leadership. Now, they have Scott in charge who some would argue has to be considered a good hire as commissioner on this deal alone.

You're just mad you can't have your Pac12N with your DTV.

You would hope it would work that way, but meanwhile in the real world, good deals don't happen because of petty feelings, and bad deals do happen because the people on both sides of the table really "click" and "like whoring working together."

Your going to fire a guy that tripled conference revenue.

Rightttt.....

So he is absolved from clearly tanking the conference's biggest endeavor?? He is shorting the member institutions millions in TV/AD revenue.

Also, it would be almost impossible for Scott or any commissioner of a P5 conference to not increase revenue in this CFB climate, so lets not start making his statue yet.

Nice attempt. Actually I have Dish Network and live in the North East. Up until recently I was able to watch each and every CU game I wanted. It's Scott's lack of acumen that has changed that. I did what he asked me to do as a customer, I switched to the preferred carrier, and now I still may not be able to watch the Buffs? How is this acceptable?

At the end of the day, the provider we are talking about, refuses to offer to pay even close to what the conference thinks is a fair value price for its content. The other party, DTV, feels that they should, in addition to getting it for less than Dish or Comcast are paying, should own 51% of the network. And they feel they should own all the on campus TV systems too (probably so they could charge students in their dorm rooms for ****ty cable) at all 12 schools. Something all 12 presidents unanimously voted against because they also saw no value in it.

There is no deal. Get over it.

You know as well as I do that there are choices available on the market that do offer the P12Network. My suspicion is you refuse to switch providers so you can see it. So you blame Scott and instead of blaming DTV.

Hey, d*ldo..read the posts above before you take time to invent an argument.

Im sorry about that and ignore the bottom half of my previous post.

The P12N is a niche network with an extremely limited audience and it always will be. Its vying for a premium spot with premium revenue at a time when there are falling revenues and uncertainty about TVs future. I think the Presidents (the ultimate deciders) recognize that and realize that they might be one of the first to freely stream broadcasts down the road instead of being attached at the hip to a Fox or ESPN that hold them together as bundled systems decline and disappear. Those other conference might not be so happy when ESPN Disney becomes an additional $20 a month like HBO for instance. But they will not be free to escape it.

I do think you might be on to something with the content decisions and maybe their head of the P12N should be replaced. I will not argue that because there I agree.

Ultimately, outside of the P12N, Scott has proven a good leader and provided ample new revenue for the schools. In the next few years we may see another round of conference realignments and we should have someone ready for that.

Also, lets not forget that prior to the P12N the Buffs were much much harder to watch on TV and sometimes were not even on at all.

This is supposed to make me feel better? The GD conference owns their own network and as a fan/alum I still can't tune in to watch my team?? In what business setting is a failing like that tolerated?

Write a letter to Benson. He controls Scotts future.

I'd guess that they are not happy with the situation either. But until the contracts are up they can't change anything without some kind of a legal mess.

So since you have Dish and do get P12N is your gripe the content change? And by the way, which regional do you get living out east? Or do they decide for you?

Really wasn't defending Scott as much as denying the claim that a new commissioner is going to solve the issues at hand.

Larry Scott not only said he wanted to create a national confference but also held a media tour in NYC back when the Pac-12 was formed. Here we are 5 years later and the Big 10 and SEC networks each have 5 times+ the number of subscribers that the P12 Network has.

That's not a failure, that's a massive failure.

Pac 12 football and basketball games are less available since the Pac Network was created. What do they call that? Irony?

Scott's biggest wins came from being an early mover in conference realignment and renegotiating network contracts. Those early wins have turned into...nothing... what you call "a massive failure". You can see Scott's only win over the past several years by reading higher up this thread and see that there are still people that blame Pac-12 fans for the fact that DTV has not picked up the Pac-12 network. Scott has been able to deflect his failure onto the fans and some unknowing dupes bought into it hook, line, and sinker.

He also blames us for LaserDisc not taking off, the failure of Crystal Pepsi, and the premature demise of the XFL.
