Pac 12 network / direct tv (PACN now on fuboTV streaming)

Convincing argument. I'm sure we all now think Sacky should tell them "it's my customer preference"..... Makes perfect sense.

I told them when I dropped them in June that it was because they didn't offer PAC 12 Network. I don't give a **** if they cared - it made me feel better.

Did they try to retain you with some BS offer to extend the NFL GameDay package?
And how did that make you feel?

I was pretty much an asshole. The woman gave up fairly quickly.

It felt fine.

All hail the value of bitching at call center script reading hourly wage slaves. The therapeutic value of bitching at those people can't be understated.

Couldn't you have been a bigger asshole? I mean if you were really good at ripping them a new asshole, then they should have added the P12 network to their lineup already.

I made it very clear to Directv I was leaving because of the P12 network and the disconnect process was not anymore painful than the one you describe. Why you wouldn't want to make a point of this is beyond me. Every data point helps in regards to the P12 network's future.

When you guys cancel and they ask why, you should just say " you already know" and then hang up. I bet they spend weeks trying figure out what you meant.

DTV's position is simple, for every 1 swinging dick that wants the P12 there are 10,000 that want NFL Sunday Ticket. They sound like they know exactly what they are doing

When I disconnected I said it was because of no pac-12 network. The rep tried a little bit after that, and I did have to get a little rude before they gave up "listen, the only thing you can offer that would change my mind is the pac-12 network, and you can't do that, so just quit trying."

I did it right when the network started, and I think a lot of non P12 fans were calling and threatening to leave just to get discounts or free sunday ticket, so the reps were used to having people quickly cave once they have them something. From what I've heard now, the reps don't fight too much when told that this is the reason because they now know that just agreeing is easier if the person really is serious, and if they're not serious, well they just called that bluff...

I cut ties with dish last month after I figured out how to get a paid stream on the official international P12 network. I also signed up with slingtv (which dish is running), and that's going great. They just added a sports tier; I've already told them that they bring the P12 network that I'm in. (Also, for those of you wondering, the slingtv subscription gets you full access to watch espn.)

It's not an either/or situation, though. DTV is fully capable of offering both.

A quick update on the Dish install:

We had originally scheduled the install for last week. The wife didn't want to do that as we still had a bunch of stuff in the DVR that she wanted to get through. So I called and rescheduled for today. They initially tell you "between 8 and Noon". Last night, we got a follow up e-mail that said they'd be there between 8:30 and 9:45 and that the process will take approximately 2.5 hours. They showed up this morning at 9:15.

My very first impression has been good. They have been communicative and have done what they said they'd do on the schedule they agreed to.

Same experience. Haven't had a phone call about upgrading packages yet, either!

^^This^^

And one individual leaving isn't going to change their minds, even a small group won't. What does though is when they hear it often enough. We don't know what the tipping point is but the simple fact is that television content providers are all in a battle for a limited and arguably shrinking market. Can they afford to ignore and lose a segment of the market that wants PAC12 programming.

They will never discuss that as a consideration if they don't have the active feedback that lets them know why people are leaving.

Direct has chosen to use a model that says the NFL network trumps all. Customers won't leave because they won't leave the NFL, the rest doesn't matter. They need solid numbers to tell them otherwise. They believe this strongly enough that they are willing to "lose" money on Sunday Ticket knowing that they can make it up on other programming.

Losing customers for Direct becomes a bigger issue now as their future with Sunday Ticket gets less secure. Up till this point they have known that their competition for the package consisted of Dish which has shown that it isn't interested and the cable companies who individually don't have the spending power to take it and collectively have trouble working together to make it happen.

Now there is an entirely different situation. Direct is still in the drivers seat because of their established relationship but they aren't secure.

Apple, Microsoft, and Google all have expressed interest in making serious entries into web based delivery of programming. Each has enough cash on hand to easily outbid Direct and Sunday Ticket would be their easiest route to major marketplace penetration. They would be willing to lose hundreds of millions on it to establish themselves as a legitimate option to cable or satellite.

If this happened not only would Direct face a major new competitor but they would bleed off enough of Directs customers to bring the future of Direct into question.

For all of this they can't afford to ignore losing slices of the market that individually may not be huge but make up a significant chunk in the big picture.

I've been with Dish for many years, don't have any interest in leaving. With that when the PAC12 network was coming on line I let them know that it would be enough of a factor to make me look at leaving. I know they noted it because when announcement time came around they sent me a form letter that essentially stated "Mr. MtnBuff, in response to your communication with us earlier we are happy to confirm that PAC12 network will be a part of your programming package starting XX/XX/XXXX. Thank you for your interest in this matter."

Install done. No problems. Some slight differences, but nothing we can't get used to.

Next call: DTV.

I've been looking forward to this for 2 years.

Pretty sure DTV's marketing executives have access to Neilson ratings that monitor on a daily basis the previous night's television viewership, including P12 numbers.

I'm pretty sure that DTV hires marketing consultants to have customer focus groups where areas of consumer satisfaction and opportunities for change are discussed.

I'm pretty sure statistical sampling is used, whereby disconnect reasons are evaluated based on samples versus cumulative totals.

i'm pretty sure disconnect and new subscriber numbers are evaluated regularly and competitive offerings by geography are well known.

It's charming to see several of you who feel strongly about the importance of everybody sharing your disconnect reason as some kind of benefit to the P12N's cause. This concern seems exaggerated.

If you want to share your reasons for leaving, great. Just know that the primary game being played is for the agent to sell you on staying, and everything you say is providing the sales agent with information they need to make you a sales offer.

The best way to help the P12N is to pay a provider who offers the network to provide it to you. And then watch it.

which are ?

The remote is different. It takes a little getting used to. When you have DTV, you get to a point where you know where all the buttons are. The new remote has all the same stuff, just in slightly different places. We had the installer set us up so that scrolling "down" is actually scrolling up in number. That's just the way we are used to it. They'll set it up however you want it. The Hopper seems to be a solid DVR. 2,000 hours of recording time, with a maximum of 3 shows at the same time. That's fine for us. mrs. sacky noticed that she can't go out more than 9 days in the future to find a show to record. The Genie lets you go out a month. Not a big deal, just a minor difference.

So I made the call to DTV. It was anti-climatic. Mostly they tried to convince me that I could watch any game I wanted to through some different network other than the P12. I told them that was a lie and to stop insulting me. So they did. It was a pretty short conversation, actually. She mentioned that she gets a lot of cancellations due to the P12, but I don't know if that's true or not.

Do I have any illusions that my cancelling will convince them to carry P12? No. None at all. They made that decision a long time ago. At some point, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. If they have already lost whatever customers they were going to lose by not carrying P12, then what difference does it make to them to carry it now? They aren't going to get those folks back.

You will figure all the new features soon enough but the two I like most are the game finder app (blue button) and the primetime recording feature. Somehow the hopper uses only one tuner to record all the primetime shows on nbc, cbs, abc, and fox. If you wait 24 hours you can then watch them from the dvr and automatically "hop" over all commercials.

We don't watch a ton of network TV. The primetime anytime feature would be a waste of good DVR space. We're just setting it up to record the same shows we always have recorded.

I am looking forward to getting better with the new system. I don't think it will take very long at all to get used to it.

My old boss runs that program for all the states west of the Mississippi. They've mad some strong investments in technology and people to make it go well.

You can go out over 9 days after the system pulls its first big guide update; sometimes takes a couple days, what you're working with now is the initial quick pull.

Also, you can use dishanywhere.com to set your recording schedule etc. I love that feature.

don't forget gamefinder.

I'm downloading the app to my iPhone today. I have to upgrade the ios first, though. That's taking a couple hours.

I prefer to use the website, but yea, app works great for viewing video/recording stuff as well.

And you need accurate data on disconnect reasons to have this correlate properly. You know, like "Skid cancelled because we didn't offer P12 vs. Skid cancelled because of consumer preference."

That's DTV's problem. Not mine.

I don't tell Starbucks why I buy coffee at Dunkin Donuts.
I don't tell WalMart why I shop at Amazon.

Stepping all over yourself with contradictions. I didn't understand why it was so hard to simply say the reason you were canceling vs. your customer preference. But the longer this goes on, the stranger it's getting.
