I can’t help but think that Arizona and to a lesser degree UCLA are going to improve quite a bit as the season goes on.

They built a big lead, but almost squandered it. UNC recovered an onside kick with 1:15 remaining, but had an illegal block so they had to re-kick and Cal was able to recover. If not for that block (which was really really close to being allowed) Cal may have been in trouble.Haven’t heard much about Cal anyone watch the game?
Right, it could’ve been much higher had we not taken our foot off the gas. We didn’t run many plays overall but each one was for huge yardage. And we didn't throw a pass for the final 20mins
Cal's offense was anemic. 119 total passing yards, leading receiver had 34 yards, and their leasing rusher went for 95 on 29 carries. Thankfully UNC's QB threw them 4 interceptions and finished with a QBR of 7.8 (that's not a typo). Seems like good defense, but lots of questions on offense. UNC looks really, really bad.Haven’t heard much about Cal anyone watch the game?
Defense played well. Offense sputtered after starting pretty solid. Not clear who the best QB is going forward.Haven’t heard much about Cal anyone watch the game?
Ya, to be clear I think UCLA could improve a good bit but still lose most games. Just a rough schedule. But I expect Kelly to have them improving throughout the year.I'd agree with you on Arizona, but UCLA is in for a rough month, and I think we play them at the perfect time. They play Oklahoma in Norman next week (that's gonna be FUN lol) and then Fresno State (10 game winner last year and they were the pick to win the MWC West in most mags I saw preseason-not far-fetched that they win at UCLA) before us.
He has to kind of look like he cares first.Ya, to be clear I think UCLA could improve a good bit but still lose most games. Just a rough schedule. But I expect Kelly to have them improving throughout the year.

And weren't they missing like 6 starters for suspensions or something? Not sure how serious Speight's injury was, but he seemed to be managing alright. When he went down, things went awry.
TruthThe overreaction to week one is always fun to watch.
I'm a little disappointed they didn't let Lytle or Noyer run the offense at all. I know MM is trying to be a nice guy but those two need to get some real game reps.
Backups for both OSU and Oklahoma had pass attempts and those games were even bigger blowouts.
It really isn't fair for the backups who put in the work and it creates a team without any experienced depth.

That's what New Hampshire will be for I think. Blow them out and get everybody reps.
Maybe he was thinking in terms of a playoff team, in which case we took a big hit.Rod Gilmore was saying it was a terrible weekend for the Pac 12.
8 wins
Oregon State was always going to get rolled by Ohio State
UW lost what was essentially a road game against a top ten team.
UCLA and Arizona both had what you would term bad losses, but they were also debuting new coaches and new systems.

Or you just score. It's not like we had 70 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Sure the game was in hand, but letting Noyer and Lytle lead legit drives would have been good. If they both end up in scores we have 59 - not the end of the world and easily explained by Mac that he needed to get his backups some experience. This wasn't an FCS team, no need to be super nice.Agree with this completely.
You can still kill the game with some throws. Call some of the passing plays that are designed to gain shorter yardage. If you drive down the field just kill the drive before you score.
Letting the QBs get a few reps on passing plays against a different opponent matters.
Not mentioned is the value of letting the back up OL get a few reps pass blocking as well.
Some things cannot be exactly simulated in practice no matter how you structure it.

Disagree. Film of our 2nd and 3rd teams playing against CSU's backups wouldn't be much help to Nebraska. The game was over at 35-10. Had it been 2016 and we had some Big Sky school coming in this weekend, MM probably doesn't take his foot off the gas like that. No need to score 70 and give NU more film.

I started calling for Noyer in the second series in the game chat and everyone jumped all over me - said it was "too early."We had the game in hand, one series for Montez after halftime and we should have had Noyer and Lytle in working for points.

They were wrong, you are right.
It really should be programmed into the game plan: the backup QB gets the second (or third) series of the second half, almost regardless of the game situation - but especially if we're up by more than two scores.
Getting your backup QB real game experience is important. You have to be committed to it. If you don't do it, you'll always end up with a no-experience rookie qb every 3 years.
