Phil Steele 2019 preview

Well this is the magazine I get year after year. I love the research Phil does and all the information in it.
Here are some things he had to say this year.

-Has us last in the South. Likes the Tucker hire, but CU has the #4 toughest schedule in the country. In his power poll has us at #80.

-He loves Utah and the Fuskers. Has the two playing in the Rose Bowl. Has Utah beating Oregon in the Pac-12 championship game. Has Nebraska as the most improved team in the country and losing to Michigan in B1G championship game.

-Rates the Pac-12 as the 3rd best P5 conference

-Has Viska as 1st team All American and a Heisman possibility

-Where the Buffs rank in his unit rankings
LB #39
ST #38
QB #41
WR #15

Top NFL draft eligible players (by position)
LB Carson Wells #59, Davion Taylor #22
TE Jalen Harris #51
C Tim Lynott #31
G Will Sherman #31
DT Mustafa Johnson #30
QB Steven Montez #12
WR LaViska Shenault #2

-All Pac-12 team
1st: LaViska Shenault, Mustafa Johnson, Nate Landman
2nd: Alex Kinney, Ronnie Blackmon
3rd: Colby Persell
4th: KD Nixon, Will Sherman, Jalen Sami

-2019 recruiting rankings (his own formula)
Colorado #31 National, #5 Pac-12

-And to no surprise has Alabama over Clemson for national title. Other two playoff teams are Michigan and Georgia

Phil knows his stuff. Let's hope we can surprise. A bowl game would be a tremendous start to the HCMT era.

Also, I just don't see it with Michigan. Numbers have said they should be good for several years now, and they're always good, but never break through to being great.

Recruiting rankings? He does his own for that as well? Interesting to see it as #31 when we finished in the 50’s.

Well we love to throw opinions around as fact here, but I do believe this is one case where someone is just wrong.

Phil Steele sells a magazine. He isn't dumb.

He can do all his research and evaluations but he knows that if he says nice things about certain schools he sells a lot more magazines. Nebraska fans are more than happy to spend to read an "expert" say they are going to win.

The magazine sells online with a download for $12.99 or delivered hard copy for $22.99. A few thousand fusker fans buying makes a big difference.

And he does his recruiting rankings based off the strength of the top 5 signees, the top 10 signees and the average signing grade per player for the overall class. Says the list is not about the quantity of the recruits , but the overall quality of the class.

Does Brian Howell still write most of the CU preview for Phil Steele?

One of the best things about his mag is he gets info from someone on the actual beat for the teams.

That’s a more likely reason for inflated expectations for certain teams than to sell more copies. The latter will hurt you long term when you miss to many times.

Utah and Nebraska meeting in the Rose Bowl? Let's Tuck up those plans.
I love that we see this with Nebraska every year. Their fans go nuts drinking the Kool-Aid. Then when those ridiculously inflated expectations don't come close to materializing, they eat their own while finding conspiracy and injustice against them everywhere.

Remember how they were a Top 25 team poised to challenge for the B1G last preseason according to the mags & sites?

I think my favorite moment of collapse in nebraska's ongoing battle to inexplicably convince the world that they're somehow the good guys (outside of 62-36) was REDemption :01 in which they were robbed of a conference championship by officials who had an obvious Texas bias AND THEN had the opportunity to make things right in Lincoln the very next year. The red faithful believed they had been wronged as strongly as they believe Callier is a dirty player. Imagine the REDemption :01 t-shirt sales leading up that event.

And it all set up nicely, that next year in Lincoln. Texas sucked. Huskers were rolling. And of course nebraska laid an egg.

Hahahahahaaha. **** nebraska.

I like Phil and he does really good work, but if any of his info comes from beat writers or assistants, then it’s automatically compromised when it comes to Nebraska lol. I’ll never forget last year 247 had a tagline that was basically verbatim: “defense forces 7 TOs, offense has similarly great day.” Like wtf is that?

It’s also how they run their practices when eyeballs are on them. BTN visits every squad’s practice once in camp and they’re always tricked into thinking Nebraska will play for the division. Then you find out that they held out two DLs and their starting LB. Or they played 1s and 2s vs 3s and 4s like they did in the spring game and I’m sure they do in practices that have viewers. Starting offense looks GREAT! Starting defense looks GREAT!

Phil was all over Tanner Lee being the next top draft pick, franchise QB. It happens. But it seems to happen more when we talk about Nebraska.

Michigan is getting "no more Urban" love. Most think they will finally beat Ohio State this year because of that.

The Nebraska offense is a question mark. I like Martinez as a QB. I think he’s excellent and tailor made for Frosty’s offense. The TE position is solid with Jack Stoll. The offensive line lost three starters from last year, so they need the younger guys to step up. The WR group is extremely thin. Spielman has some speed, but is 5’9” and there isn’t much proven behind him. At RB, the presumed starter Washington should be off to jail, but it is Nebraska so you never know. Again an unproven group.

Defense wasn’t great last year, but it should be improved. The DL is good.

The game at Folsom will probably be close to a toss up with Vegas, although I think the spread will move to the Huskers, with them ultimately giving something like 4.5 points.

More Fake news. All these magazines are going to be wrong. We're going bowling. Sweeping the OOC and the state of Arizona-and then we're going to beat USC for the first time in program history to get to 6. Book it.
