Projected MBB starting 5 for 2012-13 Season

We should absolutely be aiming for 20+ wins and Dancing again next year. Ambitious? Yes. Obtainable? Yes. We're hardly going to be the only ones with young talent. That's going to be a common theme next season.

And while the Pac-12 is going to be improved with a few teams taking steps forward, there will also be a few taking steps backward. The bottom of the league will continue to be extraordinarily weak.

Lastly, if this year taught anything, it's don't be pessimistic pussies about CU basketball

Based on Tad's presser, it seems pretty clear that he's not envisioning Ski in the 6th man role again. He also referred to Spencer as a pure point guard.

With that, I think we can pencil in the following:

1 - Spencer Dinwiddie
2 - Askia Booker
3 - Xavier Johnson
4 - Andre Roberson
5 - Josh Scott

I'd also pencil in the following primary backups for each position:

1 - Eli Stalzer (I think he beats out Xavier Talton, who redshirts)
2 - Jeremy Adams
3 - Sabatino Chen (I think Chris Jenkins redshirts, because we can afford to)
4 - Wesley Gordon
5 - Shane Harris-Tunks

Looking at this, I have to say that I'm excited about the skill and athleticism of the starting 5. I'm also excited about the defensive ability and toughness of the reserve 5.

But the reserves look like they're seriously challenged offensively for next season. We desperately need Adams to find his offense and Shane to continue to progress in the post or it's gonna be ugly when we rest the starters. We could have 5 guys playing close to 30 minutes a night if that bench doesn't develop.

Thoughts?

Exact same starting five I had...

I understand showing a little caution in expectations with a lot of youth but damn people. I fully expect us to make the tourney next year and will be disappointed if we don't. Missing it is a possibility and we're an injury or two away from being a pretty bad team (lack of depth... especially pg) but if they stay healthy they should make the tourney.

1. Euro trip will help the young team and help have them ready to go in the non-conference slate. Invaluable.
2. This years Freshman I expect to take huge steps forward.
2a. EVERYONE I expect to take huge steps forward... Tad ****ing Boyle is our coach and he knows how to coach, players will develop, this is not Ricardo.
3. It's basketball... sure our seniors were invaluable to us this year but talent is whats most important in basketball and we're receiving our largest infusion of talent in CU history. Including size.
4. More size and Andre back.... Great rebounding team.
5. Confidence in the returners from winning the pac and winning in the tourney... can't understate this.

**** the rest of the pac... WE OWN THE PAC 12.

prepare to be disappointed. I think making the tourney would be AMAZING. More unlikely than this year imho.

I think once tad gets the pieces to fit after the first part of the year, this team will come on strong in the 2nd half. 2013 looks to be the year but hey nobody expected cu to do squat this year so...

I like this lineup better

C- Andre Roberson
PF- Xavier Johnson
SF- Chris Jenkins
SG-Askia Booker
PG- The Mayor

Backups
C- Wesley Gordon/SHT
PF- Josh Scott-needs to get stronger
SF- Jeremy Adams
SG- Eli
PG- Talton(sp)/Sharpe

This year was a strange year with the PAC as low as it has been for as long as I can remember in the eyes of nation. The fact that the PAC only got two team in the tourney and the conference regular season champ didn't get in shows this.

With all the young talent in the conference and much more coming in this year I would be shocked if the PAC only gets two tourney slots again. We have to see how it all plays out but a much more likely number this year may be as many as 4 or 5. In addition to the young talent the PAC did well in the NIT, CU won an opening round game, and the MWC which got some of the tourney slots from the west that normally go to the PAC got flushed early.

I think if you asked Tad he would say he fully expects to return to the tourney. He did it this year after losing all the guys we lost last year so another return isn't unreasonable to at least expect.

Your starting 5 is a "small ball" group that we'll probably see on the court a bit when we want to push pace or create a matchup advantage. Really unlikely that's a starting group, though. Might be fun to see that 5 running a full court trap.

One thing that's going to be interesting is whether XJ or Jenkins would guard the "4" if a lineup like that was on the court. XJ is stronger and thicker, buy Jenk is a couple inches taller [edit: maybe an inch taller]. Again, probably dependent on who we were matching up with.

I just can't see Dre playing the 5 since he doesn't have much of a game with his back to the basket.

how the F tall is Jenk? I thought XJ claimed 6'7"

Exactly, we just watched Austin play out of position for 4 years, no reason to see Dre do it when Scott and SHT are on the team.

You're right. I hadn't looked at the updated profiles on the different sites. XJ used to be listed at either 6'5" or 6'6". Rivals now has him at 6'7".

Jenkins is a shade over 6'7", I believe.

If they're both in that 6'7" - 6'7 1/2" range, I'm a very happy man. Thanks for pointing that out. I'm even more excited about XJ now.

Jenkins said he was 6-7 185 on buff chip radio last night. XJ said he was 6-6, I don't remember if he said how much he weighed, but he is 215ish.

Pretty sure XJ would guard the 4, he has a ton of weight on Jenkins and a bigger build.

1. XJ is a very good low post scorer, SHT is a bench player. Josh Scott is about 2 inches taller than XJ. The team should play to its strength, and that is they are athletic and they are fast. Play up tempo offense and press defense.

The starting lineup this year

Andre Roberson 6' 8"
Dufault 6'8"
Carlon Brown 6"5
Spencer 6'2"
Tomlisnon 6'2"

Andre Roberson 6'8"
Xavier Johnson 6'7 will play both the 4 and 3.
Chris Jenkins 6'7"
Askia Booker 6'1"
Spencer 6"2"

I don't see much of a difference from both lineups. And i did say i like this lineup, didn't say it should be the starting lineup. SHT will probably start because of his experience and length.

$100 says Josh Scott starts at 5, Roberson at 4, XJ at 3, Booker at 2, and Dinwiddie at 1.

I see what you're tryign to do, but it just won't work. Height is one thing, but bulk is another. Dre is not physical enough to play the 5. Honestly, in my perfect world, he'd be starting at the 3. He's only 220 or so lbs, so he's going to get pushed around down low. Jenkins is 6'7", but 180 lbs.. That's slight and couldn't play any time at the four really. XJ might be able to slide between 3 & 4, but he's better suited for the 3. Ski is 6'1" (allegedly), but 160 lbs.. That's a tiny team that would get pushed around by anyone with size.

We need Scott or Simba to start next year in Austin's spot to give us some physicality. I would place serious money on it being Scott, but you never know.

Soon, it won't just be Dre's ball... it will be Colorado's ball.

you know I was kinda thinking about this last night and I'm not sure his numbers will go down that much. I am really hoping the guys we have coming in are as good as advertised and Dre and the other guys realize they need to box out and they can grab even more rebounds. I really want to see up be a top 25 rebound team next year

A lot of what we'll see from Jenk is going to depend on whether he can get up close to 200 lbs by the time the season starts. He said on BuffChips last night that getting bigger is one of his priorities.

I also want Scott to start. He has good post moves, but he still needs to get stronger. SHT is a good defender and good low post passer. SHT is stronger, has more experience. You can't discount that atleast early in the season. Scott may end up starting by the end of the year.

I'm not sure SHT is stronger. Scott's a force down low.

I think you're putting a little too much emphasis on experience on this one honestly.

I think that's got some merit depending on how Tad plays it. If we look back to 2 years ago, Dre didn't start as a freshman even though he played starter's minutes and was on the court to finish games. Tad seems to like having upperclassmen set the tone by starting the game. It wouldn't surprise me if Shane started and Scott ended up playing more minutes.

can we not call SHT a good low post passer? He had one good game where he was able to get the ball to the low post from the top of the key, in other games he was unable to find the open man and would get his pocket picked over and over by defenders with faster hands than his.
