Proposal for new 40k seat domed stadium in Las Vegas

I love the idea of Vegas as a destination for the Pac-12 CCG, but I'm not sure a 40k seat stadium is useable. I realize that UNLV can't fill a 60+k seat stadium, but I think we need that for a Pac-12 CCG.

Yep. Holding a conference championship game in a venue with a smaller capacity than 11 of the 12 stadiums in the conference = small time.

My reaction was just the opposite. Pac-12 is notorious for not traveling well. One of the big objections to playing anywhere but campus sites was that an empty-looking stadium is awful for the conference. On tv, it makes us look small-time.

But 40k is do-able and nobody does an event like Vegas.

Plus, the dome mitigates the objection to December weather in Vegas being kind of chilly and windy.

I guess most of the money made on the event is from tv revenue, so maybe it would work. Clearly, Vegas is a homerun of a site as far as destinations go. Just not sure a small stadium would work.

Now a water polo championship game at the Bellagio fountain, I can see!

I have little doubts that the 12 pac championship game will be held anywhere but the LA coliseum.

If and when they take the CCG off campus and to a neutral site, I can't imagine that the stadium in Phoenix won't be in the rotation.

Larry Scott is giving Vegas a good look to be a location for the P12CG, and this stadium will help that cause. Sam Boyd seats 36k and it's terrible, so this can only be a nice improvement. 40k seems small, but it could be adequate in years where Stanford, Oregon State or Wazzu are involved from the North, hah!

With a 9 game Pac 12 conference schedule, I'd love for every team to play 1 neutral site conference game in Vegas every year. It would be awesome for fans knowing they get 1 Vegas road trip a year, and this would eliminate the inequity of half the conference playing an extra home conference game every year.

They could make this a weekly Friday night Vegas game, and between Larry Scott and the folks in Vegas - this could be a big, fun event. Not holding my breath though.

At first I was :jawdrop:  and then I was all :facepalm::keule:. But then at the last part I was kind of :thumbsup: :five:

UNLV's stupid. They have a chance for a new publicly financed stadium for 40K... why don't they attempt to step up a notch, throw in some money and get it up to 50k. It's only going to benefit the university and city. And who knows, 10 yrs down the road if the pac 12 is looking to expand, maybe that figures into the mix as to them getting some play on a national level.

I haven't looked at the media market numbers or any of that, just stating the obvious thoughts that the pac 12 is now expanded from the west coast to the rockies and arizona, Nevada would be a natural fit, eventually, is that setup.

It would replace Sam Boyd as the UNLV football stadium and site of the Las Vegas Bowl, plus be placed near campus, the airport and the strip next to the Thomas & Mack basketball arena.

Includes a shopping square and hotel complex.

Future home of the Pac-12 Championship?

You got to be kidding - 40,000? That's not small potatoes - it's micro potatoes.
That would make it something like the 78th largest stadium. Fresno State seats over 41k and they are #76.

I don't understand this love affair with that ****hole, vegas. It has abso****inglutely nothing to do with the conference, so why give it the boon of any conference games, let alone the conference championship game? I love the idea of the championship game being on-campus and think the benefit of getting that game at home adds just a bit more to the season.

I agree. Vegas isn't in the Pac 12 area so why are we throwing them a bone again? They can go play the MWC championship game there.

+2

Furthermore, conference championship games are difficult for fans to plan for on what is typically only 1 weeks' notice.

I vote for highest ranked team gets to host the CCG. It puts the conference's best team in a better position to win the NC by giving them home field advantage for the game that they would need to boost them into the NC game.

This would also guarantee a sellout as it would be easy to fill a CCG home game no matter what school is in it.

It doesn't need to be 100,000. Remember the main tenant will be the UNLV football team. They can't draw flies, so going 100,000 would be a waste of money. Still, I think they need to be at least 50,000 if not 60,000 in order to do some of the things they want to do.

Looks like UNLV is trying to fill the void left by BYU/Utah/TCU in the MWC. Good for them, but it has no bearing on the Pac-12, other than it makes them a better candidate for OOC road trips.

UNLV knows that eventually, the Pac will look to expand to 16 teams. UNLV wants in on that action. I can't blame them. I hope CSU gets their act together, too.

Just guessing but I think the pull is that Las Vegas has the show of something fantastic and the city will rally around bringing another national, annual event. It will be a big money draw for the city and city will throw TONS of money at the conference to keep them in town. Most casual fans may not be swayed by thoughts spending the weekend in Glendale, AZ, or Denver CO, or San Jose, CA, pending crap to do along with some of those locations being on the farther end of the Pac 12 spectrum. Vegas is centrally located. It's two to seven hours from LA/Bay Area with tons of facilities/hotels/entertainment to make a weekend trip FLY by. Generally flights to Vegas are among the cheapest out there as well so it could be softer on the pocket books. (alright, not really.)

Just my thoughts.

UNLV has a better chance to move up in conference because of the size and growth of the city. Their problem is that everyone in Vegas is from someplace else and nobody cares about UNLV. If they were to play in a 50k stadium they would have to have one that can be "shrunk" in capacity so it doesn't look abandoned.

CSU is a no-hoper (and I am an alum, got my masters there) in terms of moving up. CSU needs to be more concerned with being pushed down to FCS level.
This year they barely averaged 22,000 and even when they were ranked they had trouble averaging 28,000 and that is with ticket prices less than 1/2 if what CU charges.

I think that the trend is toward 4-5 superconferences of 12-16 teams each. Schools like CSU, Wyo, the Sun Belt schools, most of the MAC, etc. will be left out and likely forced down to the FCS level. In the long term this may actually be a better fit for CSU although their fans would never admit it.
