Proposal for new 40k seat domed stadium in Las Vegas

I believe further expansion will be primarily driven by TV. If any of these teams add significant markets, they will be looked at. Any that don't will be dilutive to all current PAC 12 members. CSU will not be included because they add zero TV-wise (dilutive member). The PAC 12 would probably look seriously at MAC 10 refugees due to addition of mid-west viewers. If New Mexico continues to grow, then I could see the PAC going there.

The only way this might change is if there is a need to move to 16 teams as a defensive position (meaning all major conference in the country move to 16). Obviously this is a real possibility. If this happens the PAC should do everything they can to get in the mid-west TV markets before taking any western refugees.

They'd go after Oklahoma, but they'd go SEC or independent imo.

The 4 I'd like to see would be KU, SDSU, UNM and UNLV. Problem is, that's more of a basketball play and football drives revenue.

Agreed. Vegas pretty much sucks and I think the majority of people in the current pac 10 footprint would agree. Why would you want to go to vegas in late november to play a football game?

I hate Vegas -ugliest town. Looks like it was built in two weeks. No trees, sleazy, dirty, and hot as hell.

Why are we assuming the next jump is to 16? That's a lot of extra mouths to feed, so the next 4 would only be invited if it increases everyone's share (optimally). I would bet the PAC12 goes to 14 next. As we've pointed out, there just aren't many viable candidates. It makes little sense to expand, it makes even less sense to expand to 16 given this fact. 14 could maybe work in the not too distant future. 16 at the moment is ridiculous.

I can see UNM being the next choice just due to expanding TV coverage. That would pull in a lot of extra $$$$, errr TVs, errrr people. It would almost corner the entire Western market. After that, I don't see many options.

If I were in charge, I'd pick Air Force second. It would also bring in a good academic reputation, give CU more of a paired rival, help with Colorado Springs population, and also help with our worldwide "brand."

After that, I don't see the logic in sharing revenue with any of those other schools. Maybe something around Las Vegas, but I agree with the sentiment here that UNLV doesn't carry much support in the town, so what's the point? Inviting a school into a conference so another school doesn't come into your region, even though it has no sway? uhhhh, no thanks.

As much as I personally dislike CSU, I bet Larry Scott wishes CSU were in better shape. That could help us not be the outlier in the conference, give us an already established rivalry, and if CU and CSU were in the same conference, maybe that would increase interest level in Denver (which would benefit CU, CSU and the PACXX).

I hate the heat but at least when it's hot the only redeeming virtue of vegas - the pools - are available. In late november it will be cold but still ugly.

Aside from the personal dislike of CSU (I don't dislike them, I tolerate them), I am in 100% agreement with everything you're saying here.

meh. vegas is fun and all, but would rather have the game at a home stadium. How bout they just set up a gambling tent (no sports betting, of course) for the weekend somewhere near the home team's stadium? Then no need vegas :smile2:

40,000 seat dome stadium in Vegas. Could be used for future Pac-12 CCG? Now that's funny. If that's all you can pull in for your Championship game, your in BIG trouble. Hey, cu you might want to think about decommitting from the Pac-12 and join another conference if this is their all encompassing Vegas seating capacity for CCG. Just kidding but it was funny.

You wouldn't happen to live in Kansas would you?

I really hope we will have to wait a while for post #38.

No. Live in Loveland, Colorado. Not from Kansas but that number 1 state you all love to hate out here. Well Boulder Buff sorry to disappoint on post #38.

Talk about Legends and Leaders. Naw I would just as soon not. I can't believe they couldn't come up with something any better than that. Hinky - Dinky would have worked just as good.

Looks like there is more to the Las Vegas story than previously thought...

Proposal emerges to build three-stadium complex in downtown Las Vegas

UNLV's stupid. They have a chance for a new publicly financed stadium for 40K... why don't they attempt to step up a notch, throw in some money and get it up to 50k. It's only going to benefit the university and city. And who knows, 10 yrs down the road if the pac 12 is looking to expand, maybe that figures into the mix as to them getting some play on a national level.

I haven't looked at the media market numbers or any of that, just stating the obvious thoughts that the pac 12 is now expanded from the west coast to the rockies and arizona, Nevada would be a natural fit, eventually, is that setup.

Yes UNLV is stupid....the entire state of Nevada is stupid. NV is 2 Billion in the hole a nd the new governor's proposal is to cut the higher ed budget to the point that UNLV might as well close its doors. Meanwhile the GIN swilling mayor Oscar Goodman is pitching a counter proposal to build a multi-stadium complex...all while the entire state is broke on its ass. No stadiums will be built in Vegas. BTW Investment opportunities abound in Vegas. You can buy most real estate for about a third of its 2007 value.

what goes in the third stadium? We have a football stadium, a basketball stadium, and an in between one with a hole in the roof...

***k Las Vegas, it's the biggest hell hole in the west, and you can gamble anywhere now. There are more online poker players now then in all the casinos in the world put together. I'd rather go to Cripple Creek any day compared to Vegas.

The article says that if the complex was built the developers would try to lure UNLV basketball to play in the basketball arena...that makes no sense to me as UNLV has a perfectly fine arena on campus in the Thomas and Mack Center - what makes these developers think they have a chance in hell of pulling UNLV hoops off campus???

I don't think you read that right. The new complex is attached to the Thomas & Mack Center where UNLV currently plays. It includes improvements to T&M and puts football on campus. It doesn't move basketball.

They did mention stealing the rodeo & stock show, though. That's big time in Vegas.

The article seems to talk about two separate plans - the first plan, which involves building the 3 stadium complex in downtown Las Vegas (not part of or near UNLV), has this quote in the article:

"The investment group said it would seek lease agreements with UNLV to allow the school’s football, basketball and baseball teams to play in the facilities for $1 a year to provide a new downtown home for Rebel sports."

I think the second plan mentioned in the article, the "UNLV Now" is what you are referring to...that one involves the area around the Thomas and Mack Center....

Um yeah...All that green grass looks real nice in artist's rendering...check out the Las Vegas Sun for the local's comments on this latest scam.
Can you imagine what the water bill would be for that much real grass in that furnace during the summer? It's probably artificial turf - would fit in perfect with the ambience of Vegas. Not to mention the site is 1/2 mile from the airport's runway. Nice - bring your earplugs.

Online poker is still illegal in the US (I know many people do it, but many more do not because of the illegality). And the games in CO are better than they used to be, but still not like real Vegas games. They should legalize it and regulate it, but that's a topic for another day...

There's nothing like playing poker at the Venetian, IMO.

I would pick up a condo on the Strip in a heartbeat if I were in a position to do so. You aren't kidding about the prices.

Las Vegas is rapidly losing it's population. Main industry tourism, and the casinos are struggling to survive. There is high stakes gambling everywhere now, and the internet is already a major problem for places like Vegas. Personally, I would rather invest in something close to a beachfront.
