Punt returns, let's put the false myth away

Who are you yelling at? I don't think you'll find a person on the planet who would bench Oliver for JMac.

I can see rare situations where you would put the better hands back (e.g., the other team is punting from deep, we're up by 10 with 5 mins to go, and CU just wants to get the ball and run the clock). But after JMac's muffs against ASU, I'm not convinced he is the best hands guy.

The "myth" wasn't that people were saying you had to put your best hands guy back there.

It was that job #1 is making the right decisions and securing the ball. That's true. And once you're down to the guys who you're confident in on that, you play the most dynamic guy.

It's great to have a weapon back there again.

Agree, coaches will start instructing punters to kick away from him or OOB and since most CFB punters suck, it will result in shorter kicks.

It's great to have someone whom we can trust to secure the ball and THEN have the ability to make something happen. If it came down to a decision between a sure hands only guy vs a dynamic play maker with unsure hands, every coach would take the sure hands guy every time. Case in point, Trindon Holliday isn't on an NFL roster this year, that I know of.

Op is the guy with the myth . Jaymac was top half in the p12 in average punt return yards. He was a good pr until he got the muffs. That said , Oliver just won that job .
Yep, it's O's job now imho. He's confident back there and you have to be.

More injury risk putting him back there next season since he will be starting CB and we will have less depth but I suppose it is worth it.

MacIntyre has good hands. He was and probably is still the safest option back there. When your team has little margin for error, you need safest at PR. As it appears that our margin of error has grown, you can start to take more risk and hope for more reward.

It is good to know that we have two guys that on most nights appear to be able to secure a punt. That takes a lot of pressure and anxiety out of the situation. It is also very good to know we have a dynamic athlete back there that can house a kick.

Great to have solid options at a position that is notorious in football for screwing things up

Watching the replay, I don't think I've ever seen the gunners blocked so well. CU had 3 guys back that gave Oliver room and opened a seam for him. The rest was a footrace. Those return blockers deserve some major kudos too.

When I was watching that punt hang in the air without a lot of distance, I yelled "fair catch!". Then I looked down, didn't see his hand up, about crapped myself, and then noticed all 3 gunners around Oliver were blocked. Once I saw the blocking, my mind immediately went to "he could break this".

JayMac did a good job and was the safest choice. Oliver has now proven he can handle the pressure and catch the ball as well. Clearly has the edge for being able to take it to the house, so he's won the job. That's how teams develop.

Even in winning, BJ has a conspiracy theory against HCMM. BJ is to the football boards, what Waldo is to the Politics boards. Or better yet, BJ is to HCMM as Sacky is to HRC.

When Oliver crossed the goal line on that punt return, I stood up and yelled "Players make Plays"

If I remember correctly, the ASsU punter was killing em that day. Crazy airtime and deep, very different from last nights punts. I do think we found our new returner in Oliver but Jmac was dealing with a beast of a punter in the ASsU game.

I agree that Oliver is the man and has clearly won that job.
I agree that the ASU punter did a great job.
I would say that JMac was very good before that game.
I would also say that there is no excusing JMac's performance in that ASU game - he's better than that, he had a rough night, and I guarantee if we asked him he wouldn't be making excuses for it either.

Why is everybody saying Jay Mac is still the safer option and has better hands?

Oliver is the superior return man AND is the safer option

Relax all.... I don't think many if any are saying that Jmac needs to be the returner.
Oliver has shown good hands and good/great return yardage.
Many of us have just said that the #1 job is to SECURE the ball, and make good choices about catch situations.
The secondary job after #1 is complete is to get yards.
Early on, Jmac had #1 solid. So it was hard to complain about him in that role.
For all we know, Oliver wasn't showing the hands in practice, then with more practice and with Jmac bad game, things changed.
I don't see any myth or disagreement with Oliver having the PR job now.

MacIntyre said in his press conference last night that they had been working with Oliver all season on securing punts and he is finally performing at a level that the feel safe with him back there.

Last night showed how you put a guy at PR who is a threat to take it back, regardless of where he plays on offense or defense. Most electric PRs in college are full time players on one side of the ball as well. Jabril Peppers is example number one.
