Punt returns, let's put the false myth away

When I was watching that punt hang in the air without a lot of distance, I yelled "fair catch!". Then I looked down, didn't see his hand up, about crapped myself, and then noticed all 3 gunners around Oliver were blocked. Once I saw the blocking, my mind immediately went to "he could break this".
Listen to Barnett on the highlights and he says "he's got it" after Oliver had gone only about 15 yards. In his post game comments, Mora said that the punt was called to be a rugby punt but the punter didn't do that (I wonder if that's because he had to short-hop the snap and he just wanted to get the punt off without getting blocked) and that's what led to the big return.

Last night showed how you put a guy at PR who is a threat to take it back, regardless of where he plays on offense or defense. Most electric PRs in college are full time players on one side of the ball as well. Jabril Peppers is example number one.

No knock on Oliver, but Jabril Peppers would've scored on both Oliver's big returns... and then he probably would've figured out a way to score two TDs on the one Oliver did score. The blocking was that good.

I wasn't comparing the two players, I was just pointing out that you can't be scared to put big time players in a position to make a difference on special teams simply because they might get hurt.

Basically, all I'm saying is, O is the scarier guy. I'm not crapping on Mac at all. When O is tired or whatever, I don't mind seeing Mac back there. It's a hard job man, best way I can say it.

It's a luxury to have a guy who can score from a punt return. It changes how the opponent plays. Any time you can make the opponent change its normal game plan to account for one player, you have an advantage.

On both of O's big returns, he made 2-3 quick cuts that Mac would simply never make at the speed. I like Mac's tenacity and scrapiness, but his athleticism isn't close to O's.

Oliver has become much more confident fielding the ball than he was at the start of the season while JMac has developed a little bit of the yips.

I would expect though next year though that Oliver will be one of our starting corners. He will still be a dangerous option returning punts but I doubt he has the job full time. They will probably use him when games are tight and they think he might make a difference but in situations where they prefer a solid catch we will probably see JMac.

Also If the game isn't tight we aren't going to see Oliver, they should try to control his workload.

This all assuming that one of the younger guys we have doesn't step up and take the job. We have been recruiting enough plus type athletes that we shouldn't be surprised if one of them shows and takes over the job.

of all the things to worry about, after a game like that...

seriously, how bunched up does one's panties need to be to focus on this minutiae? oliver had a great couple of returns. enough said. agenda much?

A couple years ago we were terrible at virtually every aspect of special teams. Now we are at least good at some of them.

Amazingly enough even the areas we are still bad (FG kicking I.E.) we played a team that was even worse.

To reach the level we want to be we still need to fix a bunch of stuff. Schools at the top of the rankings like Bama and Michigan tend to make a positive difference on special teams, we aren't there yet but we are improving.

Schools like Alabama and Michigan have 4* redshirt sophmores on coverage teams.

The way this thread reads to me: the buffs are 7-2 so I can't complain about McIntyre on every play so I'm going to go after his son, which is a less than subtle way to go after Mac making the OP a complete troll.

First punt return for a TD since '05.

That is a big part of it. As we continue to recruit better athletes and develop the depth to let some of them focus on STs we will get better.

Another part though is that those schools put serious time, effort, and coaching into making them good. When they come close to getting a kick blocked they fix it before the next game. It isn't allowed to be something for other teams to exploit.

yea, that is crazy. 05' WOW. Makes you want to really celebrate every little accomplishment, not sure when or if it will come around again. ask the Cub fans

I agree. The myth was that MacIntyre was the best option and the support was that he had the best hands, safety first.

Reasonable that this was true in September and then he performed well until the ASU game. At that point, he lost his job. I don't know that there should be any controversy here.

Op is the guy with the myth . Jaymac was top half in the p12 in average punt return yards. He was a good pr until he got the muffs. That said , Oliver just won that job .

MacIntyre made some nice returns. Oliver's superior speed made for game changing returns. Oliver killed the myth last night.

1) you suggested MacIntyre was only in to catch the ball.
2) That's a myth. His good returns proved you were wrong.
3) restating your other false myth after agreeing you were misrepresenting reality doesn't actually do anything to make you more credible on this.

Does BJ understand that Colorado is #1 total punt return yardage and #3 in average yards/return in the conference? I'm struggling to understand why this is such an issue for him - except for you know, the "conspiracy theories" put forth here.

He can't complain about Macintyres conference record anymore. He needs something, so manufacturing an issue where none previously existed is his best option.

Oh, Big Jim. Let it go. You'll be able to move on with your life. The birds are singing in the trees, the bees buzzing about the flowers where the Buffalo roam, and nary a cloud to be found. Come back to the fold and enjoy the golden shower of forgiveness.
