Recruiting News - Olympic Sports

New track recruit- Hurdler Alex Billing

A couple running sites with recruiting databases (http://parser.dyestat.com/search.jsp?colID=7337 and http://www.milesplit.com/signings ) are both showing the Buff’s Track and Field team picking up a new athlete, Alex Billing from Simi Valley (Southern California). Looks like Mr. Billing's best event is the shorter distance (110 meter) hurdles.

Welcome to the Buffs Mr. Billing- hope all goes well!

Per his stats ( http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/MeetResults.aspx?Meet=199772#1892), he came up big under pressure with his career best time coming while ending up in 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] place in last year’s California state championships as a junior. (I figure this kind of result is always impressive due to California’s population and track tradition.) He was also the only junior in the top 5 in that championship race, so assume he’ll be a/ the favorite in this year’s championships.

Here is also an article on him from last track season (http://www.dailynews.com/sports/201...ys-alex-billing-to-clear-is-division-ii-title). One nice quote I’m sure a coach and fans will appreciate (from his current coach)- “In my seven years of coaching, no one trains as hard and as consistently as him,” Ringgold said. “I’ve used him as an example for our entire program. When I feel like we might be lacking energy in practice or we’re not as focused as we need to be, I talk about Alex because no one brings it like he does every day. It’s just great to watch him compete and enjoy this kind of success because he deserves it.”

Note- I also found a tweet that I'll assume means Mr. Billing has officially signed with the Buffs (rather than just being a verbal commitment), so I'll also note that in the 1st post of this thread.

Another top track and cross country recruit- John Dressel

Per his twitter, sounds like the Buffs picked up another top cross country and track official commitment, John Dressel from Mt. Spokane High School in Mead (a suburb of Spokane) Washington.

[tweet]535165827478462465[/tweet]

Welcome to him joining the Buffs!

1) Per his track stats (http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=3541554) (among other things):

a. This past season as a junior, he came in 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] in both the 1600 and 3200 meters at the Washington State Championships (3A Division). He also came in 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] in the 3200M and 6[SUP]th[/SUP] in the 1600M as a sophomore.

b. He also has some impressive results from some large national invitational races, including 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] in the mile at the Portland Track Festival, and 7[SUP]th[/SUP] in the 2 mile at the Brooks PR Invitational.

2) In cross country (stats- http://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/Athlete.aspx?AID=3541554):

a. Looks like, from his sophomore through senior year, he came in 6[SUP]th[/SUP], 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] and then 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] in the 3A Washington state championships. (In this and prior years, looks like he’s been having a fun rivalry with another top national runner, Tanner Anderson, who happens to be from nearby Spokane, so they’ve raced a lot.)

b. In one of the two big annual national cross country series for high schoolers (Foot Locker Nationals), he came in 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] last year as a junior in the finals at San Diego, a GREAT result for this destination race for most of the top high school young men around the country.

c. In the national cross country rankings dated 11/6 from dyestat.com (http://dyestatxcrankings.runnerspace.com/gprofile.php?mgroup_id=46052&do=news&news_id=297469), Mr. Dressel was ranked #5 in the country. In the MileSplit Flo50 rankings released 11/17 (http://www.milesplit.com/rankings/subjective/251), he is ranked #7.

Men's golf picked up Ben Bradley of Wiesbaden, Germany. I don't have enough time to look up any info on him right now though.

Just saw in the newsstand that Edwards also signed 3 local talents.

As Buffnik noted, there is now an article at cubuffs.com ( http://www.cubuffs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=600&ATCLID=209775142 ) formerly introducing the four new Men's golf recruits.

One item of note- Mr. Bradley is actually enrolling this coming January, and will be competing with the team next semester during its main spring season.

Welcome all to the Buffs!

No new future Buffs found, but there are still a few athletes in the initial post of this thread I don't have noted as officially "SIGNED", as I couldn't find anything confirming that they'd formally committed to the Buffs.

Anyway, did a quick search on them tonight, and did find confirmation that incoming Buff runner Tabor Scholl (from Kremmling) has signed ( http://eliterunning.us/Tabor.htm ), so I'll be adjusting her status in the 1st post.

Welcome again to her!

New track and field commitment- shot putter Austin Swanson

Looks like the Buffs have picked up another track and field commitment, this time from a shot putter.

[tweet]539655184192774145[/tweet]

Mr. Swanson is from Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, (Southern) California. His stats can be found here- http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=4148108 .

Welcome to him!

(As it mentions in the tweet, Mr. Swanson is a two sport athlete in high school. Looked quick, and he was also an All (Mission) League defensive lineman this year. (Buff football verbal commitment and his current teammate Aaron Haigler tweeted out congrats.) Between him, Cañon City hurdler/ running back Trenton Stringari and whoever else may already be on the T&F team, everyone other than the football team may want to avoid pick-up football games with the track and field team next year!)

As was mentioned in his longer football thread (http://www.allbuffs.com/showthread.php/102518-15-AZ-ATH-Isaiah-Oliver-(Verbal-to-COLORADO), one of the new football verbal commitments, Isiaiah Oliver from Brophy College Prep School in Phoenix, AZ, is also a hurdler, and plans to also run track while at CU.

To echo the sentiments on that football recruiting thread- welcome to the Buffs Mr. Oliver!

His track stats can be found here- http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=3913737. Per those:

1) His main event is the 300M hurdles, in which he finished 2nd last year in the Division I Arizona State Championships Meet.

2) Actually, looks like he maybe also has/ had aspirations of being a decathlete, as he had competed in one. However, assume all the time it takes to excel at those divergent skills won't be practical while at CU, at least while he's playing football. (Although, I guess I shouldn't say it's impossible- a few unique people have been able to do some seemingly extraordinary things (I'd assume mainly time management gurus and/ or geniuses) as student athletes.)

(Just as an example of what's possible athletically for two sport athletes, Buff track and football fans can only hope that Mr. Oliver has near the success as a two sport athlete that Oregon's Devon Allen (also from AZ) has. Mr. Allen is the Duck's #2 receiver this year in both receptions and yards, as well as being last year's NCAA outdoor track champion in the (shorter) 110M hurdles.)

Rep AB. You are doing some serious work in this forum.

Also, just a guess, but you are a programmer? The way you make sure to close all your parenthesis, even those double ones is so soothing to me. There is notihng worse then someone leaving a ( open.

) - had to close it.

Ha. Hadn't thought of a reason why I'd be like that before.

Not a programmer. But now that you mention it, I may have spent more time in my life, next to sleep, at work, staring at and working on Excel, than any other single activity. And, the formulas obviously aren't accepted in that program when parentheses aren't in sync.

Not sure whether I should thank you for helping me reach that little self-awareness, or curse you for making me realize I've spent such a large % of my life on Excel.

New soccer commitment- Sarah Kinzner from Calgary

So, it looks like soccer has joined volleyball in going north of the border to get a commitment!

[tweet]546870123521273856[/tweet]

(She’s also listed as a Colorado commitment in the soccer commit database to which MarkW sent me the link.)

Per http://canadasoccer.com/?t=roster&pid=12411 , looks like Ms. Kinzner has been on and played major minutes on the Canadian Under 17 national team, and was one of only two 17 year olds on the Canadian Under 20 team roster (http://canadasoccer.com/?t=2014_project&sid=1001) that competed in this past summer’s “FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Canada 2014”. She is a midfielder from Calgary, Alberta, and plays with the Calgary Foothills Soccer Club.

Congrats to Ms. Kinzner joining the Buffs!

Here's a bit more on Sarah: http://calgaryfoothillssoccer.com/news.php?news_id=885500 Sounds like she was key to Canada's U17 team's success.

I believe when Sanchez was at Wyoming he had a number of Canadians on his squad.

Here's another article on her: http://www.calgaryherald.com/sports...er+national+soccer+circles/9615972/story.html She's been "fast tracked" to the U-20 team.

And a video on youtube where she scores a goal v Venezuela - she's #10 for Canada (in white): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQtEKzLPNnA

Any news on transfers from other programs to the volleyball team? Was just wondering if Taylor Simpson's graduation might open up interest from other players wanting to make a splash in the Pac 12?

This is also a question for the soccer program (minus the part about Taylor Simpson). If you think of this season's team, there were a number of players who had transferred in and made an impact - Kate Scheele, Tori Cooper, Brooke Rice, Morgan Stanton, Kahlia Hogg. If form holds, CU will land a transfer or two for next season.

I haven't heard definitively of any transfers coming in or leaving yet in any Olympic sport. We are planning on starting up a separate transfer thread once we hear of the 1st one in any Olympic sport. (My usual twitter searches did find a week or so ago a potential men's golfer who MAY be transferring into Boulder, but it was a 2nd person tweet, so I am still trying to find a little more confirmation.)

Of course, if anyone out there in Allbuffs hears something about transfers, I'm sure we'd love to hear about it (or potentially NOT love it if it's someone leaving).

New lacrosse verbal commitment- Jen Mistretta

Per the laxpower.com database (and the write-up quoted below), looks like the lacrosse team has picked up another verbal commitment for the 2016/17 academic year- Jen Mistretta, a midfielder from Nanuet, NY and Immaculate Heart High School (in NJ):

1) Per http://riverdell.powermediallc.org/2014/05/22/all-bergen-county-girls-lacrosse-team/, she was 2nd team All Bergen County girls lacrosse team last year as a sophomore.

2) Her high school stats are here- http://highschoolsports.nj.com/player/jen-mistretts/stats/girlslacrosse/girlslacrosse-2014/ . (Lacrosse is a spring sport, so latest stats are still from last season.)

3) Here's an article that included a writeup on her and her CU commitment (from http://sufferngirlsyouthlacrosse.com/News.asp):

"Junior Mid-fielder Jennifer Mistretta (16’) has announced that she has committed to the University of Colorado. Although she does not attend Suffern High school, this SGYL alumnus is one of us! From the first day she stepped on the field at Suffern, she was a force in the lineup and a terror in the defensive zone. This “battle tested”- Immaculate Heart Academy (IHA) star player has been tearing it up in one of the hot beds of girls lax – Bergen county, NJ for the past 2 seasons. A Nanuet native, Jen passed on middle school lax and instead chose to speed train and focus all her energy to her SGYL team. Mistretta is not the most “Flashy” player out there; her specialty is the “dirty work” and nobody does it better! Her non-stop pursuit of the ball, aggressive play and her ability to come up with a 50/50 ball is game changing. She has exceptional field vision and her ability to lock down a top scoring threat with speed, muscle or finesse has made her a priority target of many of the nation’s top programs. She was an integral part of the success of the “Drab World Tour team”. “Fully committed” are not strong enough words for the Mistretta family and this Two-way talent who will make an immediate impact with the Buffalos. In 2015 – Watch Out For Mistretta!!!

Congratulations from all of us here at Suffern Girls Youth Lacrosse!"

New cross country/ track verbal commitment- Reilly Friedman

It looks like the men's cross country/ track and field teams picked up a new verbal commitment sometime recently for next year (August 2015 CU start)- Reilly Friedman, from the Galloway School in Atlanta Georgia. Source of his commitment is this article (http://usatodayhss.com/2015/georgia-boys-cross-country-roy-reilly-friedman ) about him being named Georgia Boys Gatorade Cross Country Runner of the Year.

Welcome and congrats to him committing to join the Buffs!

1) Per his track stats (http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=3595148) (among other things):

a. This past season as a junior, he won the 3200 meters (M) and came in 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] in the 1600M in his Georgia State Championship Meet (Div. 1A- Private schools).
b. As a sophomore, he also won his state meet in the 3200M, and came in 4[SUP]th[/SUP] in the 1600M.
c. With his senior season of course still pending, looks like a nice annual improvement in his personal bests so far per the above link:

Season Records
1600 Meters- 2012 Outdoor- 4:52.64a; 2013 Outdoor- 4:27.65a; 2014 Outdoor- 4:22.74a
3200 Meters- 2012 Outdoor; 9:48.51a; 2013 Outdoor- 9:38.01a: 2014 Outdoor- 9:25.50a

2) In cross country (http://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/Athlete.aspx?AID=3595148):

a. Looks like, from his sophomore through senior years, he’s WON his school’s Division (Class A Private School) Georgia state cross country race each year (3 wins in a row).
b. As noted at the beginning of this post, was selected Georgia’s State Gatorade Cross Country Runner of the Year.
c. He came in 6[SUP]th[/SUP] in his (Southeast) region’s Nike (NXN) qualifying race in 2014, and then came in 28[SUP]th[/SUP] in the NXN national championship race last month.
d. In the final national cross country rankings for individuals dated 12/18/2014 from dyestat.com (http://dyestatxcrankings.runnerspace.com/gprofile.php?mgroup_id=46052&do=news&news_id=305640), Mr. Friedman was ranked #47 in the country.

In addition to already being announced as a football signing, just noticed that Patrick Carr is also shown as a member of the incoming track class per http://parser.dyestat.com/search.jsp?colID=7337 , so wanted to note that in this Olympic sport thread and add him to the list in the original post.

Per http://parser.dyestat.com/search.jsp?colID=7337 , he earned a 5th place finish last year as a junior in what I can only assume is a VERY competitive Texas state championships in the 100M, and 9th in the long jump, so sounds like he can definitely help the track team out as he develops.

Welcome to the Buffs!

Just found the 1st two 2017 verbal commitments for lacrosse- Haley Farella and Claire Smesko, both from the STEPS Elite club in New Jersey. Welcome to both young women!

I couldn't find much of substance about their lacrosse accomplishments, which probably makes sense given they are I believe early in their sophomore seasons. (2017 seems so far in the future.) Edit- did find high school stats for Ms. Smesko (http://highschoolsports.nj.com/player/claire-smesko/stats/girlslacrosse/), I believe just with her freshman (2014) stats at this point.

Source for Ms. Farella was 1st the congratulatory tweet from a former club shown at the bottom of this post. Then, from a Google search, found her club's (STEPS) list of commitments (http://www.stepslacrosse.net/nj/njelite/collegiate-commitments-and-alumni/) which, in addition to her, also shows Ms. Smesko as being a Buff commitment. (My main source for lacrosse commitments, laxpower.com, hasn't started posting 2017 commits in its database, so there could be other 2017's I'm just not aware of yet.)

I think this LAX coach is something special. She's really putting together what looks like an outstanding program. In a very, very short time, I might add. The whole team right now is Sophomores and Freshmen, with one Junior that made the jump from the club team.

From the below tweet, sounds like the Buffs have another lacrosse verbal commit for 2017, this one from Colorado- Madi Wifall from Kent Denver. Welcome to her committing to be a future Buff!

Her stats look to be available here- http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/mad...AmVebBJg/gendersport/girls-lacrosse-stats.htm . As I noted with the other 2017 commits I noted in the above post, I don't believe the 2015 season has even started yet for lacrosse, so the only stats showing are for her freshman year. Maxpreps shows per positions as midfielder and goalie, although it doesn't look like she played in a game as a goalie last year, while she played in 15 games in the middle.

That would be Zuri Smith, 6'5" MB/OH from Las Vegas NV. I don't know about the skill level, but Kritza has certainly recruited height in the 2015 freshman class. Only one of the recruits (Taylor Joachim) is in the top 100 "Senior Aces" list. The other are not in that or in "the next 150". Can't find too much info on her. A brief highlight video shows her hitting and blocking but at that height, when you have 4 or 5 inches on most everyone else on the court, you can do that. It remains to be seen how she will do against PAC 12 level players.

Still trying to figure out- I also found this Zuri Smith's (Note- shows as a 2016 HS Grad) stats on maxpreps from Sumter South Carolina- http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/zuri-smith/IYggsPTrEeKZ5AAmVebBJg/gendersport/volleyball-stats.htm.

Is it the same Zuri Smith (splitting time between Vegas and South Carolina)? If not, could she (also showing as a TALL (6'4") player) be the Buff recruit?
(Interesting Zuri must be a relatively common name nowadays. There's also a Zuri Smith already playing collegiate volleyball at Morgan State U..)

Well, I went by what was reported yesterday on Rich Kern's volleyball site. I couldn't find any clues on her twitter. So who knows for sure???
