Rick George releases a statement

Agree. The contract given to KD is unforgivable. But it's reasonable to think that RG would not make the same mistake again. It's also reasonable to think that he would. But if Phil D is not gone until the end of the school year, the Buffs can't wait that long to make a coaching change.
End of the day, it's CFB and HCs get 3-4 years to prove they can win and deserve an extension. It doesn't really matter what program you're talking about, how rich, how poor, how good or how bad, that's basically the one constant at every program. Delaying the firing of Dorrell in order to save $3.8m (him coaching 2023) and waiting for the stars to align with a new Chancellor and maybe a new AD is not a prudent move. The new President is in place. He needs to manage the situation and set expectations that everyone else falls in line with.

That would be the worst thing CU could ever do-Those games with the Nubs and CSU at Folsom will do a lot to make up what we'll have to spend to fire Stoneface.

I really don’t think RG is going anywhere. The best we can realistically hope for is a quiet departure from PD coupled with an easing of oversight on the AD to allow for more avenues to pursue success. Let RG do his thing and hire the next guy. If he fails again, then he is the one who needs to go. Carve Phil completely out of the situation. Going forward, the Athletic Director reports directly to the University President, which effectively makes the AD a fifth CU campus.

I just hope he can still fund raise after this KD debacle. Otherwise, we have a lame duck AD.

I think RG stays. I like RG and he was in charge of recruiting when they came to get me, so I'm a little biased. I truly believe he is hamstrung in doing what he wants and what he thinks is best for CU. I hope as soon as he was done penning that note, he was on the phone sending out feelers for the next HC.

Mike Mac is a hell of a DB coach and evaluator of DB talent. That 2016 secondary was tremendous and was the main group which drove the success of that team. I give MM a ton of credit. It's deserved.

I also think that season showed MM's limitations and ceiling since he wasn't able to capitalize in recruiting on a 10-win season.
Rewatching some of the games that season, we did not win the close games on scheme or great coaching choices. We had a core of players, lead by Sefo, who simply were not going to lose.

Are you saying RG’s job performance has not deteriorated at all over the last ~30 months?

I tend to hold this sentiment.

You dont go from hiring Mel Tucker to hiring the disaster we have now.
You dont continue to retain that disaster either without a reason.
You dont go from being a supposedly bad AD to being the AD at USC that makes a name hire.
You dont put restrictions in place that other schools dont and then keep them ad nauseam.

One name spans all the above....

They absolutely can't be coming off an 0-12/1-11 type of season, retain the HC and have zero excitement with those two teams coming to Folsom. There has to be some excitement going into next year, and nothing gets the fanbase of a bad team more excited than a new coach.

I’m not seeing where RG is throwing Phil under the bus. We are, but I’ve not seen any indication that RG has been anything other than a good soldier.
Sock puppets.

He somehow led one of the drives to include fan message board participants as valuable partners when he was with the Rangers to acting like we don't exist at CU?

[went ahead and used the font before people start thinking I'm serious...]

Oh I completely agree-I'd take it a step further. None of these coaches need to be on staff. If you want to keep Hagan, whatever....but he can take a fundraising role or whatever within the AD.

I'm indifferent to Hagan being on staff. I'd rather him take an AD role, but am fine with him remaining on the new staff if the new coach wants to retain him, but I don't want anyone forced the new HC.

Starting over in one season with a new football coach, athletic director, and chancellor has too be very unusual (not to mention a brand new President). Even if CU the School has decided to fund all of this (won't happen), I can't wrap my head around the timelines of this happening. It simply can't all be put on Sailman as his job is too large for that.

I think CU is stuck with RG for at least this hiring and really don't see any way out of it. Once the new Chancellor gets in, then he can make his assessment and move quickly if needed. Ultimately, CU has created this mess with two individuals who are in pre-retirement mode and one of them who simply only cares about the bottom line.

What I think happens:

1. RG fires KD this year, whether it's after another route this Saturday, after a loss to Arizona and 0-5 start going into the Bye week, or at the end of the year
2. RG gets one more swing at a HC with Saliman's backing and little to no involvement of PD
3. New HC is hired
4. PD retires at the end of the school year
5. New Chancellor is hired and gets to evaluate RG and new HC over 2023, 2024 and 2025, which coincide with RG's contract
6. At that point in time, RG either retires (alternative to being fired or because he doesn't want the job anymore) or he's extended, along with the new HC assuming the team is relatively successful.

If I'm RG, I don't speak to PD at all going forward. PD simply doesn't care at this point in time, but you have to hope Sailman makes that decision for him.

Could Lance Carl be shown the door now? Dorrell was all him.

This is probably the best one can realistically hope for.

I also don't really have a problem with it, either. There doesn't need to be a Chancellor involved in this process. Things have gotten bad enough and the program, and by extension, the University is a complete joke to the point where the University President has to show some leadership and manage the situation himself. If obstacles are removed and Saliman demands excellence, I'd expect RG to be able to make a good hire like he did the first time around. I'm willing to believe that the KD decision was not his.
