RIP Coach Mac

Love the stories meeting him by @buffgal and @ahoelsken .

Anyone else meet Coach Mac?
I did, briefly. I was walking into Folsom during my summer job at CU. One of the offices I was delivering some materials to was in the old part of the stadium where they used to house ROTC and some other programs. I was fumbling with the papers and as I got to the door, somebody who was apparently right behind me reached over and opened the door for me and stood aside for me to enter. I looked up and it was Coach Mac. I was so startled, I just said "hi Coach, thanks." He smiled and said, "no problem". I turned right through the door, he turned left. End of story.

Yes several times.
My dad was the president of the Boulder Buff club in the late 80’s, so I was fortunate to “hang out” with Coach Mac and the team for many functions.
Coach Mac also used to live in the same area we did and I would occasionally see him at the gas station and King Soopers.
The last time I saw him was at a Spring game during the Dan Hawkins era.

He was a great man and that is what he should be remembered for.

Shouldn't be forgotten though that he had a huge impact on college football as a coach.

He won a NC in large part by installing and updating the triple option run based offense. At the same time as he did it he also ended up killing the triple option as a primary offense.

kNU did manage to win a couple titles with it before the rest of college football caught on and Mac probably was a couple years early in dropping it (I personally think he expected everyone else to see what he saw earlier than they did.)

He made sure to have a tough NT who could tie up the interior OL and a couple of very physical ILBs (think Ted Johnston or Matt Russell) Then he took two big athletic guys who normally would have been hand on the ground DEs and put them at OLB, that was Big Al and Kanavis.

The OLBs penetrated destroying the ability to run laterally and the ILB took away the FB and the QB draw.

The man was a genius in addition to being an amazing individual.

Didn't meet him, but one of the (very) few times I ate at the Med in college, he was there with his wife at the next table. I didn't say anything to him, and he didn't say anything to me. I overheard the waitress say that his meal was either comped or someone paid for it.

Cool story, bro.
