Shedeur Sanders - 2023-25 Tracking History Thread - Drafted by the Cleveland Browns (NFL)

Stefanski had that look on his face in the interview that said this isn't how he planned it but now he has no choice.

Gabriel was a wasted draft pick, you don't use a 3rd rounder on a guy who is never going to be better than a backup for a good team.

Still if not for injuries to Gabriel and Pickett despite what has happened in camp I think Stefanski would have only played Shedeur in the 4th quarter and wouldn't have given him much opportunity to show out.

Now with the injuries he had no choice and Shedeur made it impossible to bury him or ignore him.

Would be crazy as bad as the Browns have been for a long time but every once in a while a QB manages to turn around a whole franchise. Do not in any way think I am comparing Shedeur to PFM but consider how bad the Colts had been and been for a long time prior to Peyton getting drafted by them, and look at their struggles since even getting a generational talent in Andrew Luck who they could never give the support to compete to be elite.

The franchise still had it's issues but Manning was able to lift them. It would be amazing if Shedeur were able to elevate the Browns to respectability, especially after the number of high draft choices they have put into trying to find a QB over the past few decades.

Incredibly embarrassing that whoever wrote this, and then whoever green lit the text plaque, missed “two seasons at CU he broke more than 100 school records and was also finished college as one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in history”. I emailed Rick immediately, this is annoying.

Other than that though, legacy wing looks amazing.
Get used to it. This next generation is illiterate.

B+ based on my grading and that's with my expectations for rookie QBs in the preseason game. That said, 🤣 to the he's a 5th round pick crowd. End that stupid ass noise. He was blackballed. He was always a 1st round QB and should have been a top 3 pick.
this. this. this.

that **** was another coordinated effort by NFL teams. there is really no other honest view on it.

basically, they decided he needed the Kap treatment. those that passed are going to regret it.

He had one bad throw that should have been picked and he missed a couple of reads.

That is stuff that wouldn't be unusual for an established starter in game one of the pre-season.

He looked a lot like a legitimate NFL QB. He was making multiple reads (Joe Thomas who knows a little about the Browns system commented multiple times that Shedeur had gone to his 3rd read including on one of the TDs,) he was placing the ballin perfect spots.

As I've said before there are some GMs in the league who are going to be searching for excuses that they didn't draft Shedeur and he isn't going to give them any. If you watched his interactions on the sidelines and in the huddle you could see that his teammates like him and more importantly respect him. The NFL is a man's business. That doesn't come just because a guy has some fame, it has to be earned. The players know who can help them win.

I'm on record as saying I think he is going to be better than Cam Ward, don't make me laugh by mentioning Dart.

Aww. Oregon front runner no longer a front runner. I feel so devastated for him.
NFL rookie contracts are slotted. Gabriel getting drafted in the 3rd round means he got a bigger contract than he deserves if you listen to the draft commentators who said that he was drafted much higer than he should have been. Teams are also very hesitant to cut 3rd round picks earlier than they have to. Result is that he is going to make more money than he should have.

He's still going to get plenty of opportunity to prove he belongs in the league, multi-year QB backup is a pretty good gig. He could make a few million dollars for holding a clipboard and simulating future opponents in practice.

All and all, I thought SS played well for a rookie QB on his 1st NFL stage... There were some jitters and rust for sure + penalties but the name of the game is outscoring your opponent and SS/Cleveland did that. They were gifted a muffed punt, but SS exploited it. SS threw some dimes--2TDs, no Int, no lost fumbles. As SS settled in, I thought he was getting up to the NFL game speed and the game was not over his head. SS played within the offense for the most part. I think that he gets play in the next 2 pre-season games, and if the Browns do not play well with Flacco out of the game, I think that SS gets a decent look this season. All and all, a positive.

@DBT, you made a great point, at certain junctures of the game SS had that "it" factor. That is huge in the NFL as wins are as close as losses... I'll be interested to see if he has that "it" when playing in the regular season. When you look at the HOF MLB starting pitchers (or some QBs), the ones with the "it" factor don't win because they bring their "A" game every night, they win with their "B/C" game by keeping it close and leading the team to wins, however pretty or ugly--it is the W that counts.

For the most part I thought Shedeur was okay. But it was those crazy TD throws that elevated his performance. Shedeur has that “it” factor, for sure. It’s time for the Browns’ management to realize that. You can’t coach height. You can’t coach speed. And you can’t coach “it.”

I love watching folks who didn't watch much (or any) of S2 in college be surprised when they realized he is crazy accurate on the run, much more mobile then they thought, and just likes to make plays

I see your point, but this was pre-season game #1. Going against the #1's on the D side could change things, as the game will only get faster. It was very positive tonight, so I can see SS's perhaps doing it, but an NFL season is very rigorous.

SS getting huge press/accolades this morning.
He had a little 'nerves' initially imo - the high throws and a couple behind receivers - but he played great and made all of us proud.
He is a good Buff, and the fact that Dad is the coach, means he'll always be pumping CU

edit: maybe not 'nerves', but hadn't gotten his rhythm yet. SS:

"I'ma be honest, I wasn't nervous or have too much adrenaline, it was just getting comfortable," Sanders said after that game. "That's all it is. There's plenty games before where I was nervous, but I felt like I knew the answers to the test. So, when you feel unprepared, then you don't feel ready for the moment. I know I'm ready for the moment. Did I play up to par? No, I don't feel like I did. But overall, the main goal was to win and that's honestly what we did."

edit 2:
SS to CP, before he left the field
"Sorry pops, I didn't do what I was supposed to do fully."…

It’s no fault of his own so I actually feel a little bad for him. A third round pick who is already facing an uphill battle in the league has to contend with the Shedeur fanfare
There was Youtube stuff saying he had a sad meltdown when he saw the merchandising data. They can't get enough SS stuff to sell, and they had talked of discounting or bundling Gabriel's jerseys.I do feel bad for him

Pretty solid start for him. Agree about the holding the football too long at times instead of just getting rid of it. That'll come as he progresses. I remember another guy that did that, John Elway, one of the best ever. He'll settle in. He looked like he's trimmed up a bit or is that just my fvcked up eye sight? :D

I’m finding myself almost more angry now than I was during the draft. During the draft I was shocked. Now I’m just really pissed over Shedeur’s obvious black balling by the NFL. This kid should’ve been a first round pick and received everything that goes with being a first round pick. He should have gotten a first round contract. He should not be having to scrap for playing time. He should be getting reps with the first team guys. I’m super proud of how he is handling all of this.
