Shedeur Sanders - 2023-25 Tracking History Thread - Drafted by the Cleveland Browns (NFL)

The issue for SS going forward this preseason is that Stefanski is going to want to evaluate Pickett and Gabriel assuming they're healthy, therefore SS will be getting limited time splitting reps with 2 and maybe 3 other guys. Presumably Flacco won't play in the preseason. But the good thing is that SS made the most of his extended time last night and already has a big leg up on the other 2.
Continuing on with a less-than-100% Pickett is mind numbingly stupid, especially now that your brought in Huntley. They need to cut Pickett and just give the reps to Gabriel and Shedeur with Huntley getting few with the 3s to be their emergency guy the rest of the preseason. The charade that Kenny Pickett needs to be evaluated and given a shot is ridiculous

Pickett is Pickett, everyone in the league knows who he is and what he will be, he isn't going to magically get it.

Browns don't want to just cut him because they would be on the hook for the part of his contract that guaranteed, mainly signing bonus. They are hoping that some other team loses a QB to injury and is willing to give them a draft pick for Pickett as well as take on some of his salary cap hit.

Huntley as well isn't an aswer that anyone wants to hear.

Flacco is going to be the starter at least early in the season if he is healthy. Outside of that their total emphasis now needs to be on finding out if Shedeur can be their franchise QB for the future or do they need to once again try for a QB in next years draft.

my conclusion, based on some evidence

either every nfl team's, scouts, talent evaluators and GMs totally failed in assessing SS,

or bias, racism and/or hate for CP affected their draft decisions.

During the game, I thought stefanski didn't seem supportive of SS on the sidelines (pat on the back, smile, etc). His postgame comments led me to think he doesn't like SS. How could a coach not be enthused, excited and really supportive of this rookie?

I think your third paragraph is a part of the answer to the question you're asking in the 4th.

I don't think the Browns have a plan. They're dysfunctional.

I just saw that the Deshaun Watson cap hit for next year is $80M.

Amazing that management survived trading for DW because things had soured with Baker Mayfield.
I mean, i would be trying like hell to make it work with a 5th round rookie contract on my starting qb; that cap benefit would be such a ginormous advantage. Unless you're mentally deficient you've got to try hard to get it.

if the Browns really don’t think Shedeur will ever be their starter and are smart (a big if there), then they would trade him now. Shedeur had huge trade value after that first preseason game.

Right? Flacco and Pickett are both 1-year deals. There's no thought that either would be part of the 2026 plan.

Are they hoping that Watson gets medically cleared at some point this year and that the veteran combo of Flacco/Picket can keep their season alive until he's back? That's the only "plan" that makes sense in context of how they're handling things. DW is definitely reacting to Shedeur in a negative way. Maybe that's the real issue - that they're still all in on Watson?

Knowing everything about DW, and still deciding to give him a massive payday and future-altering cap hit, suggests the management of the team has been both desperate and stupid.

I had the same reaction as CU3X to the way Stefanski dealt with SS during the game, further supported by his locker-room speech—to me.

Sure, it’s Cleveland, but having 6 QBs now, with no apparent sense of their quality, actual potential, or how to handle the situation they’ve created is not good.

Oh they have a plan, the plan is dysfunctional but they have a plan. Just like every other plan they have had they will manage to screw it up.

At this point their plan is called Arch Manning. Suck bad enough to get the first pick or if necessary trade what it takes to get the first pick then hope than someone named Manning can magically fix all that is wrong with them.

The really crazy thing is that they had a 1st round talent QB drop into their hands in the 5th round. If they were to effectively develop him as a franchise type QB they will have maybe the cheapest starting QB in the league plus a bunch of draft capital to use to build around him, and they already have multiple quality players.

The Watson contract was an absolutely stupid decision but when it finally is off the books they will have a massive amount of money to spend on filling holes in the roster. Again if Shedeur can be established as a young quality starter those FAs are going to be much more willing to look at Cleveland as a place to go. Continue to wander with washed up retreads and anyone who wants to win isn't going to be interested.

And by the way none of the 2026 QB prospects is a guaranteed generational type pick. Manning has all the tools but has yet to establish himself, Klubnik is a classic college QB but needs to develop pro skills, Nussmeier is undersized and underwhelming. This draft doesn't have a clear cut pro prospect, which even then sometimes doesn't turn out great for a bad organization see Trevor Lawrence.

If they had a plan they wouldn’t be in this situation.
That's the last place I wanted Shedeur to go. Hopefully, he can make it work somehow. I'm not really talking about other players, they absolutely have some. I'm talking about upper management or, hell, the organization for the most part. Denver used to have the same problem. Yeah, they made Super Bowls but completely got their dicks knocked in the dirt in all of them.

Well I guess Jaxson Dart isn’t laying an egg like I thought.

He’s still gonna be a bum imo
He didn't play as well to me as the numbers indicated but you can't hate. I gave him a B- grade but PFF gave him a 80.4 which is tops for all QBs that are rookies.

His non playaction stuff was very good and his under 2.5 seconds was terrific. When he was doing the veer and shoot stuff, he shined. When he was playing more or a pro style offense, he was good with a 95 QB Rating. Gotta give Dart his shine. I felt he was a tick late in his decisions post snap but his feet looked good and when he felt pressure, he did better more than he did bad. Definitely didn't think he was as good as Russ but felt he did well against Jameis and Devito who all played well as well. I Will probably change my grade to an overall B- which with the rookie boost is a B+ for Dart. For me, a B means you look like a legit starter and good so he's not getting that grade, nor is Shedeur but they looked like if you took them 1-3, it wasn't a mistake at all like it was for AR, Trey Lance, or Jared Goff in their preseason debut performance.

I'm sorry, i couldn't help myself. This is not about athletics at all . The same people who think SS is arrogant are complaining about how his mom dressed for the game. (she can wear whatever she wants). Yahoo Sports:

Mom
As a general thing, there is way too much commentary from sports fans about the hotness of the moms, sisters and significant others of athletes.

I hate that guy. Shedeur was right to confront him.
That reporter did the same thing to Baker Mayfield. You can Google Mayfield going off on him in a press conference, calling the reporter stupid for asking stupid questions, calling him clueless, etc... clearly, the reporter is an antagonist. I saw another clip this morning, where that reporters radio station partner called the reporter out for bashing Shedeur last week for no reason.
Shedeuer handled it well.

My personal thoughts with PFF grading coming soon. Shedeur PFF grades were a tad underwhelming for my expectations in some areas and better in some areas, especially areas like playaction where I had as a #1 negative and his plus 2.5 seconds was tremendous against Carolina compared to college at JSU or Colorado. I'll talk about it later.

I've said it a thousand times, special traits are for Sanders:

1. Intangibles
2. Feel for the game
3. Pre snap reads/field vision
4. Toughness

That's his super powers.

Then he has strengths like accuracy, ball placement, footwork speed, break sack, ability to throw under pressure, scrambling ability due to his change of direction and speed. Lacks acceleration and high end agility. Post snap reads is a strength although a lesser tier one, and he reads defenses exceptionally well even if his anticipation is lesser than his peers in my opinion. He's more Ed Reed than John Lynch.

If I had to put together pro QBs alike it's
Throwing motion like Brees

Feel for the game like young Deshaun Watson where his best skill is that he's a playmaker. That's what he does best. Make plays. Watson used his top end acceleration, agility, and COD with with his decent at best speed (MPH) with his C+ accuracy and B+ ball placement to shine, Sanders uses his top end COD and speed (MPH) and his B+ accuracy and A ball placement to do his work. Both players put up insane numbers in HS and college. Both players as prospects were touchdown magnets. They both just know how to make plays. I watched Watson whoop my HS by 45 by HT. He was unreal and the best playmaker I've seen in GA HS history. Juju and Trevor were better passers and Justin was a better player but Watson was the best playmaker. Sanders did the same in Texas. Watson somehow lost his biggest strength after missing a season in a half which is his playmaking and feel for the game. Like someone took his talents.

Scrambling like Fran Tarkenton. Not the tier of Russell Wilson. No one is.

I don't know who to compare him to as a passer. Peyton is the one that comes to mind as he's an top end reader of the defense and doesn't do with anticipation as often as his peers but he's one of the cleanest QB prospects and Shedeur with Cam Ward are very messy.

Shedeur is like Shedeur. B+ accuracy as a prospect with A tier ball placement. Not quite Dan Marino or C.J. Stroud.

To me, this was clear QB1. I really don't know how he wasn't 1st overall. I understand Dart and Ward in particular had more talent but none of these guys are anywhere close to the QB Sanders is. Nowhere close.

Remember, those other QB's were standing behind the comfort of the #1 offense line, throwing to #1 and #2 WR's and TE's. Shedeur was working with 2nd and third team scrubs from the Browns, many who will be cut shortly. Not only a subpar OL, but the WR's were not creating space for the QB to throw, like #1 and #2 WR's can and do.
