Shedeur Sanders - 2023-25 Tracking History Thread - Drafted by the Cleveland Browns (NFL)

Right? Flacco and Pickett are both 1-year deals. There's no thought that either would be part of the 2026 plan.

Are they hoping that Watson gets medically cleared at some point this year and that the veteran combo of Flacco/Picket can keep their season alive until he's back? That's the only "plan" that makes sense in context of how they're handling things. DW is definitely reacting to Shedeur in a negative way. Maybe that's the real issue - that they're still all in on Watson?
In your first point…I don’t understand why NFL teams don’t operate more like teams in other sports.

They’re ceiling is 5 or 6 wins.

Why roll with a 40 year old QB? You’re not going to be good, so throw young guys out there, and see what you have.

You’re literally wasting time putting Flacco out there.

NFL has way more pressure/competition to win now imo.

Also less games so every game counts

1. Shedeur doesn't understand the KS scheme fully and Flacco does.
2. Gabriel is far more ready mental for the scheme but he's ass right now and would lose every game and ruin his career so he doesn't need to be out there.
3. The Browns offensive supporting cast is lackluster at best. They need someone who can do a lot with less. Shedeur is capable, just as long as the defense is superb but if he has to carry Cleveland, it will be a long season even for him.
4. The Browns defense looks special.
5. KS got guys mentally right. I expect Flacco to win 6-7 games with the current personnel but he could easily go 0-4 or 0-5 and that will cost him the job as you gotta win and produce.

My personal thoughts with PFF grading coming soon. Shedeur PFF grades were a tad underwhelming for my expectations in some areas and better in some areas, especially areas like playaction where I had as a #1 negative and his plus 2.5 seconds was tremendous against Carolina compared to college at JSU or Colorado. I'll talk about it later.

I've said it a thousand times, special traits are for Sanders:

1. Intangibles
2. Feel for the game
3. Pre snap reads/field vision
4. Toughness

That's his super powers.

Then he has strengths like accuracy, ball placement, footwork speed, break sack, ability to throw under pressure, scrambling ability due to his change of direction and speed. Lacks acceleration and high end agility. Post snap reads is a strength although a lesser tier one, and he reads defenses exceptionally well even if his anticipation is lesser than his peers in my opinion. He's more Ed Reed than John Lynch.

If I had to put together pro QBs alike it's
Throwing motion like Brees

Feel for the game like young Deshaun Watson where his best skill is that he's a playmaker. That's what he does best. Make plays. Watson used his top end acceleration, agility, and COD with with his decent at best speed (MPH) with his C+ accuracy and B+ ball placement to shine, Sanders uses his top end COD and speed (MPH) and his B+ accuracy and A ball placement to do his work. Both players put up insane numbers in HS and college. Both players as prospects were touchdown magnets. They both just know how to make plays. I watched Watson whoop my HS by 45 by HT. He was unreal and the best playmaker I've seen in GA HS history. Juju and Trevor were better passers and Justin was a better player but Watson was the best playmaker. Sanders did the same in Texas. Watson somehow lost his biggest strength after missing a season in a half which is his playmaking and feel for the game. Like someone took his talents.

Scrambling like Fran Tarkenton. Not the tier of Russell Wilson. No one is.

I don't know who to compare him to as a passer. Peyton is the one that comes to mind as he's an top end reader of the defense and doesn't do with anticipation as often as his peers but he's one of the cleanest QB prospects and Shedeur with Cam Ward are very messy.

Shedeur is like Shedeur. B+ accuracy as a prospect with A tier ball placement. Not quite Dan Marino or C.J. Stroud.

To me, this was clear QB1. I really don't know how he wasn't 1st overall. I understand Dart and Ward in particular had more talent but none of these guys are anywhere close to the QB Sanders is. Nowhere close.
There are lots of guys out there who can throw a football, among them are guys who can scramble or avoid a rush, who can learn a playbook, who can talk football all day long.

The difference isn't any of those things, the difference is what is between the ears. The ability to not only read a defens but read a situation, to instantaniously make the right decision, to be seen by his teammates as the unquestioned leader.

When Peyton Manning was drafted Ryan Leaf had a much stronger arm, was much more mobile, made more spectacular plays. The difference that put Manning in the Hall of Fame and Leaf in the Hall of Shame was what goes on between the ears.

Shedeur has all the physical tools to be an effective NFL QB but that isn't what makes him the best QB in this years rookie class. It is what goes on in his mind.

Almost have to wonder if that isn't part of what scared coaches and GMs away because just like his dad he won't be manipulated, he won't be controlled like a robot. He isn't happy to just be "an extension of the coach on the field." That kind of thinking put his dad in the Hall of Fame (and Manning as well) but it takes a confident coach to deal with it. The only one who was allowed to stand up to Belichick was Brady, Elway stood up to Shanny, Sean Payton has already shown that he is able to handle Nix coming back at him. Those coaches are exceptions. Dan Reeves drafted Tommy Maddox and wanted to trade Elway because he couldn't handle Elway thinking on his own.

It may be that for Shedeur to be successful in Cleveland either Stefanski is going to have to figure out how to work with him or another coach comes in. Unfortunately most of the bad teams have insecure coaches who can't handle players who think for themselves.

KS is a delusional. He began this segment saying "We have a standard in this organization for the QB position". 🤣😂🤣
Okay, A 💩 standard maybe. Why do you have 6 QB's on the roster? Why did Baker Mayfield bolt? Dude is a buffoon, he has been a gifted top of the draft QB and is cannot get out of his own way. I don't think its news to anyone that the Browns organization will mess this up.

Cringe GIF

Watching the play back, 12 has to do a better job of staring off the backers and not staring at his WRs. He did a tremendous job of it on his big plays but did a poor job of it on his routine plays. He missed two routine plays that Dart hit for big yards and that could have gotten him 4 TDs and 260 yards. By not going through progressions on some of the spread formations, he missed some plays. Did do well with KS stuff. That's where he shined. With KS stuff. I know perfection isn't always possible but that's what we are aiming for. Keep learning 12 and don't make these mistakes consistently

The fans will never agree but sometimes a young QB is better served by having some time to adjust, to learn at an NFL level and adjust to the speed and complexity of the game. Not all of them do but many do and I believe that multiple young QBs have been ruined by throwing more at them than they are ready to handle. The coaches from practice and scrimmages should have a good idea "what they have." The fans aren't a part of that decision making process.

That said a guy like Shedeur is probably more ready to handle it than most.

It also isn't helping the team to pretend like that 40 year old QB is going to carry them anywhere good. If your rookie isn't ready play a younger backup, bring in a young guy who has failed elsewhere (like the Jets with Fields.)

Crazy thing is with a guy like Flacco is that he is costing them a huge chunk of money and he is a statue. The odds of him actually playing 8 or more games have to be less than 50%.

At a minimum unless he is just lost build in opportunities for the young guy(s) to play. Give them a series, give them a quarter or a half. In a controlled situation the young guy doesn't have to have mastered the entire offense or understand all the reads or all the situational calls. Let him build some confidence in the things he can do instead of watching an old fossil go out and fail at the things he used to be able to do.

Unfortunately, Brady won a SB at age 43 so there is likely a thought that a 40 year old can get you to the playoffs. He won't be the future, but he can get you some W's this year.

And there has been exactly one Tom Brady in the history of the league. The team that had a 40 year old Brady knew that he had played at a high level the prior season when he was 39.

There have been some teams that have gone to and won playoff games with older QBs. Flacco doesn't have that left in him.

It would be easier to believe in Flacco if he had at least one decent season in the past couple but he hasn't. The last season he has played 10 or more games was 2017. 2023 was the last season that he won more games than he lost as a starter 4-1, and the only season that has happened since that 2017 season.

If you have an old QB who can still play then play him if he gives you a chance to win something worth winning like a playoff slot. Flacco is no longer a guy who can carry a team to anything special.

I think the context of all of this gets a bit lost in picking apart plays. SS had been receiving a few reps here and there, mostly with 3s & 4s. Meaning he’s not getting to work with guys who are quality veterans, who know what’s going on, even during practice-mostly guys looking to make the team or find some playing time.

Then, he gets thrust into starting his first NFL game—without ever even standing on the sidelines as a backup—with a bunch of other players none of whom are starters, themselves, against a defense running some of its starters. Not only is he starting, but he’s the only QB on the normal roster scheduled to play.

The fact that they ran a reasonable offense at all, without a ton of penalties and miscues is amazing to begin with. The number of things he was doing for the first time, surrounded by other people largely doing things for the first time is insane.

That he did so well and made some great plays, and no super bonehead plays, in the midst of all of those first times is brilliant.

Payton Manning’s first preseason game he went went 11-for-21 with 123 passing yards, 2 interceptions and no TDs, lost 33-3, and he had been practicing with 1s and was being treated as the franchise.

Seriously. I was impressed by how youthful her skin looked. Black folks are blessed in that department, but she is especially so.
Truth. My North Sea ancestry ages like room temperature sushi. I had a black delivery driver who used to come to the house. He asked me to guess his age and I honestly guessed 60. He was 84 but had fewer wrinkles than I did.

I recorded or am recording the Monday morning sports talk shows. First Take has spent a bunch of time talking about Shedeur and it’s all positive.

Stephen A, love him or not, is a big Shedeur fan and believes Shedeur was screwed.

The overall take is that Shedeur looked good against below average competition and has earned the right to get reps with the first and second line guys and get more looks in preseason.

I believe Shedeur will be a starting QB in the NFL at some point.

I do not believe Shedeur is getting screwed over by Cleveland.

These opinions are not mutually exclusive.

I think that's what is really going on right now is that it's way too early for coaches, scouts and GM personnel to take the hits of admitting that they wasted a 5th rd pick by trading for Pickett (in addition to the 5th they had used on DTR who was shipped out in the same trade) and a 3rd rd pick by drafting Gabriel. So they're going to give them every opportunity to not be busts.

Sad, but true. In reality, if you find a starting QB among a 3rd, two 5ths and a DTR trade, well, that’s nothing.

Three ones for Watson, even after his off the field issues, was the real F/U.

There was Youtube stuff saying he had a sad meltdown when he saw the merchandising data. They can't get enough SS stuff to sell, and they had talked of discounting or bundling Gabriel's jerseys.I do feel bad for him
Dudes been paid millions already. Doesn’t have to work a day in his life.
