Shedeur Sanders - 2023-25 Tracking History Thread - Drafted by the Cleveland Browns (NFL)

Next play a shaky hand off that results in a Brown fumble. Maybe a RB error but the commentators said it was a poor handoff by Gabriel
He actually played decently other than that, but it's mostly Oklahoma DG: accurate on first read, non creativity when the first option is not there, mostly short - mid range throw.

Feels like a career backup NFL QB to me.

Browns are “hopeful” he plays in the finale.

Decent half for Gabriel but you can’t turn the ball over in the NFL. That showing hurt him
Yeah. Being totally fair, some of his plays looked pretty good, but these announcers are being VERY charitable with their characterizations of the turnovers.

Can't help but think the media response would have been very different if SS gave up a pick 6 and a stupid fumble.

He looks very much like a long time clipboard carrier to me, and no shame in that. Being a backup QB in the NFL in addition to paying well means that you are still among the roughly 60-65 best in the world at something difficult.

That said not only has Cleveland put Shedeur in a very tough situation they also have put Gabriel in an unfair situation. The fans want Shedeur, the fans and most of the media know that of the two only Shedeur is a legitimate NFL starting (franchise) QB prospect. The longer they try to pretend like Gabriel is the leading candidate the more the fans are going to blame him for the things he will not be able to do.

The only way that Gabriel comes out ahead on the deal is if Stefanski and the Browns have a complete change of heart, give Shedeur a real chance to become the starter and identify Gabriel as the future backup.

Or if the Browns trade Shedeur and Gabriel gets his line to a starting job in Cleveland unimpeded. Now, in that scenario Stefanski & his GM definitely get fired, but it should work out well for Gabriel...until the Browns draft another QB next year.

If I’m trying to build an org, I think it makes sense to keep both of them and use this season to find out if you hit on either of them. Gabriel’s cap hit averages around $1.5mm over the next four years. Shedeur’s averages around $1mm. Not that much different.

If you can get a franchise QB out of one of those picks, you’re at a big advantage. You use your 2024 picks to build around him. If neither are viable, you draft Arch.

But you’re not going to find that out in the preseason.

Unless somehow Shedeur proves himself to be a total bust and Gabriel proves to be much better than he actually is it isn't going to happen in Cleveland for him. Shedeur has become the fan favorite in Cleveland. If he gets traded away the fans will blame Gabriel.

Shedeur is a different kind of name now. He has created the kind of fan interest that Tim Tebow did with the Broncos (except that Tebow couldn't read an NFL defense or throw an NFL ball.) If Shedeur doesn't get a quality chance to be the Browns starter Gabriel is going to get blamed.

Did this clown 🤡 just take a shot as his own teammate in the QB room?

Shedeur was playing against the 1st and 2nd team defenses. 2 TD's, no turnovers.

Mister 5' 6" Threw a pick six and fumbled in 22 offensve plays. A TO every 11 plays isn't going to get him on a roster, so he throws clear shade at Shedeur, calling him an entertainer, not a competitor. WOW.

I didn't think much of Gabriel before, but now he is trash in my book.

There's also little people and people of Normal height.

I had a 4th round draft grade on him. Felt he had the most special traits in this class for QBs outside of Shedeur.

Loved his anticipation
His processing speed was fuego as a prospect
Always on time which is critical for a rhythm and timing based scheme

That's a lot. His issue was he has 3 critical flaws.

Size and length
Doesn't throw well in a muddy pocket
Struggles throwing on the run.

When you are small like him, struggling to throw on the run could be a showstopper.

Overall, I thought he was a pretty darn good QB prospect. I liked him a lot at Oregon and Oklahoma. Even some at UCF.

I just never though he could carry someone. He's like an inferior Tua with a stronger arm. Tua was one of the best prospects as a QB I've evaluated out of college. I just didn't know if the hip injury would ruin him. It somewhat did. He's not the athlete he used to be at Bama.
I thought he looked very well today.

We saw all of his elite traits and critical flaws but muddy pocket play on display. Looked much better than his college tape on a muddy pocket. Everything else, we saw. Good and bad.

He looked better than a clipboard carrier to me even if he is mainly just that in this league. I see him getting at least 5 starting seasons and even a pro bowler once in his career.

wow, that's a pretty big statement. I guess they aren't friends because that seemed very direct with its meaning.

Takes balls to throw shade at your teammate after leaving a fumble & a pick six turd on the field.

But that also tells me he feels very confident that he's going to be QB2 at the start of the season, despite his turnovers. So I'll bet the coaches have told him as much.

I was referring to Gabriel as the clipboard carrier, not Shedeur. I've said before that I believe that Shedeur was the best QB prospect in this draft, better than Ward. I still think that given a fair opportunity he still will be.

Gabriel has his moments which he should considering his extensive time at high level in college but if he becomes some teams starter that team isn't going to do very well.

No one trading for Shedeur. Who would sign up for the circus?

I am talking about Dillon. He can be a solid QB in this league. Even a pro bowler in a optimal season. That's not anytime soon but it could happen. He's just not going to be a QB anyone invest any real money in long term but he will make a good salary as a high end reserve.

Ever since you left and came back you've had some interesting takes. Did you get hit in the head or something?
I like Dillon Gabriel. I always liked him as a prospect. I didn't think it was a mistake with him being a 3rd rounder as I did for Tyler Shough being a 2nd rounder. To me, a 3rd rounder could peak as a low end starter and at least be a solid long term backup if their floor is high. I like him.

Three elite traits.

I like him. Just three critical flaws. I wonder if he can overcome it in his career. Great scheme fit with KS but I don't think Cleveland is good enough for him to have success.

Very short QBs who are actually successful are the very rare exception. Gabriel has a mediocre arm (and is a lefty which does matter) and isn’t particularly mobile. I think the jury is still out on whether he has the football IQ and processor to succeed, but most QBs don’t and I don’t see anything with Gabriel that suggests he’s going to be an exception .

I don't see him as a guy who has the ability to overcome his faults. His size is an issue and he isn't special enough to overcome it. He doesn't have the other special characteristics.

Not saying they are the same QB but at best his ceiling would be a Trevor Siemian. a starter you want to replace and definately one who won't carry you to contention. I don't think he reaches that level. I also don't see him as a 3rd rounder but backup QBs can be valuable enough that if he is a solid long-term roster guy the pick won't be wasted.

Shedeur = 2 TD's, zero turnovers, better QBR with 2nd and third string offensive players going against 1st string defense.

Gabriel = 2 turnovers (including a pick 6), with the first and second string offense going against 2nd and 3rd string defense.

Stepanski = "Im not going to compare them, they both did good things". Sounds like the furor, when he said the KKK violence and a truck that drove through a peaceful protest killing people "are good people on both sides". Shedeur has no chance with this clown at the helm. Please trade Shedeur 🙏 to a team that needs and will appreciate a winning QB.

Stefanski shows his true COLORS. He is obviously biased and has zero intent of having Shedeur on the final roster. Dude is a moron.

I couldn't get sound on that. I know it's very subjective, but I thought he was much more engaged, seem happier, talking with Gabriel on the sidelines, then he did with SS.
