Shurmur taking over play calling

Have you seen the blocking on both pass and run plays?

On the play that looked like Sheuder got hurt, Tank (maybe our best OL) missed two blocks in one play. Barely touched the outside rusher, then was so out of position he should have been able to block the guy who ultimately hit Sheuder and missed him too.
Tank isn't our best OL, and if he is SS2 will need AFLAC.

So, you're surprised that what's essentially a rookie head coach is making mistakes. We see dumb clock management all across every level of football every week. Seems it's hard to grasp.
Fans all across the stadium were calling for a knee at the end of the first half. I appreciate that Prime's MO is to push - it's part of who he is. But great leaders leverage their mindset and also develop choice around it.

There is no bigger Prime fan than me. But if we could see the need to kneel as fans - and we understood that we were giving the ball back to OSU for (at least) an easy 3 points (which turned into 7), then I'd expect the staff to see that too.

The bigger issue for me is wondering if Prime had any input at all.

You think the head coach didn’t have any input on what the team does?
There have been enough instances this year where his headset microphone is up in questionable situations that yes, I think he is letting his coordinators continue and not adding input at the time.

I think Prime is engaged and obviously has control and input, but I think he hired coordinators on both sides who have head coaching and/or many years of high level coordinator experience and has empowered them to manage their side of the ball with some level of autonomy.

I could see a scenario where it was Shurmur’s decision to run the screen and pass play before half and Prime didn’t veto him, even though he should have. He seemed in disbelief during his half time interview and even said they dropped an easy pass that would have kept the clock running, before ultimately taking accountability.

Even if Edwards had caught it he was on a bee line to go out of bounds. Just dumb to call a screen to the short side of the field in that field position.

We might be talking about different plays. I'm talking about the play in the first half where Edwards was lined up on the west sideline and ran a pattern across the middle of the field. He was near the middle of the field (left/right) when Shedeur threw the ball. Nowhere near the sideline, and nothing but green grass for 60 yards to the endzone.

I don’t think it is in Shurnur’s DNA to be aggressive in that situation. That is all on Prime

He’s a very “hands off” CEO type of HC so far, which is normally OK on many teams, but I don’t know how that can continue during entire games given the amateurish play calling mistakes and overall adjustment failures on offense.

He must be able to see that the confidence he likely had in Lewis and Shurmur was misplaced.

Two pressing issues for next year are a) upgrading the OL and b) a search for competent OC and OL hires.

As to a) the team needs to portal in some OLs who can elevate the line to at least a functional CSU or Wyoming type of level. That should be doable, and it allows you to possibly plug in a high star true freshman if you get one. If you can portal in some proven big name OLs that’s even better but that can’t be counted on.

As to b) I don’t believe that CP has a very complete personal knowledge of many assistant P5 college coaches so those searches will have to be group efforts and hopefully the hires will be better than leaps of faith.

Pretty sure Prime said in his halftime interview “that was on me”. So he either chose it or endorsed it.

NFL coaches are notoriously conservative and would have run it three times to get into the locker room. Or leave the other team with as little time as possible to do anything.

I think Prime wants to be aggressive and I like that. But he left them with time to score.

When attempting to march 95 yards in less than a minute after a half of futility (and still, somehow only down 4 points), any play other than running out clock is inherently aggressive.
For sure. FTR I called for them to take a knee in the game thread (as you stated most people in stadium did). I’m just saying, those are fairly safe calls that you see all the time in similar situations. It probably wasn’t the correct call for this team in that situation though

I think it was foolish. Playing as poorly as the Buffs had been playing and only being down by 4 points to a somewhat (IMO) overrated OSU team with halftime looming was a blessing that CU screwed up.

Im referencing the mismanagement at the end of the first half

It was a mistake. One of many gane management errors that prime has made this year. I’m not saying we should fire prime, but I hope he has the humility to correct these errors the next time

Id agree that there have been many many errors. I suspect the aggressive play calling worked for Prime at the lower levels but thats catching up with him playing at the top level.

This team is having a hard time putting together 4 quarters of cogent offense in a single game. I think Shurmur NFL experience could be beneficial for Prime and SL in terms of some game management and decision making. But the way the promotion was done and the way its being received seems confusing and disruptive. SL will probably have a much harder time recruiting now and Offensive prospects will probably be questioning committing to CU until some clarity comes to this situation. The Oregon State game didnt look different enough to say yet wether this was the right decision for the team.

I think its part of a similar pattern like taking the ball first in the two overtime games. I know we won the toss and took the ball in OT against the goats. We had the ball first against Stanford, but I can't remember if we won the toss and took it or they put their D out there. There have been more examples of weird game management this year.

Being a successful coach in this sport is 75% recruiting and 25% game management. Our staff has the first part down for the most part. Every guy here is a good recruiter. The game management is a totally different story.

Yeah, my concern is that Prime might just not be a very good game day coach. It was covered up at JSU because they had more talent, but he’s going to have to rely on his coordinators to manage their side and he has whiffed on the offensive side in year one.
He'll get better. He's smart and relentless in his craft. Lots of first year growing pains.

This is an extreme overcomplication of this situation. I think we have to assume Sean Lewis is going to be coaching somewhere else next year, and that next year's OC is coaching somewhere else right now.

I think you're right on one thing though-Recruits are likely forcing Deion to answer questions he likely doesn't want to.

I just don't understand the excuse that the run game isn't working and just giving up on it completely. News flash, the passing game isn't working and it is affecting SS not just physically but mentally. He is tough as nails, but is getting gun shy. The few times he actually had some protection it looked like he was uncomfortable and paying more attention to what was going on around him in the pocket than he was to his receivers. Is it better to keep doing the same thing over and over again, getting our quarterback beat to a pulp as we march backwards because everybody knows exactly what we are going to do, or try a little more creative running attack? 3 and out is 3 and out whether you get sacked and have our quarterback chased all over the field for a net loss of yardage, or run the ball 3 times and don't get a first down. Committing to a run game means more than running Edwards up the middle once every other series.

Heh. When yove been sacked as many times as he has you dont hang around when you feel even the slightest hint of pressure. If he truly is a 1st round NFL QB as some are predicting, and ill get some hate for saying this, he might want to cash that check.

Hate, hate, hate. Now that we got that out of the way, I thought the same, but didn't want to say it.
