BOULDER – Colorado tennis junior Sara Nayar took down her second ranked opponent of the weekend Sunday afternoon here to clinch a 4-3 defeat of Washington State.
"We're super proud of the girls today we've had a tough stretch the last six weeks or so and we just kept telling the girls we just got to keep sticking with it and stay together, stick with it and control the things that we can control," said assistant coach Anthony Nguyen Pham. "We played better on Friday against Washington and today was another step in the right direction. Some of these matches they're so close and it's just a couple points here and there. Today we were fortunate to come out on the positivie side. We're just really proud of the ladies for the way they competed today, and just leaving it out there. Win or lose we left it out there and happy for them we really earned this one."
The Buffs (8-9, 2-5 Pac-12) took down Washington State (11-10, 3-5 Pac-12) thanks to a huge clinching double point match from the No.3 team of Maria Campos and Ky Ecton along with tough play from the first three singles matches for Colorado.
Nayar was the story of the day, upsetting Michaela Bayerlova for the second time in her career. Ironically, the last time came in 2019 when CU upset WSU 4-3, the first ranked win in head coach Danielle Steinberg's time at Colorado. This time though Nayar was in full control. After barely dropping the first set to Bayerlova 7-6(3), Nayar put the pressure on and cruised to a 6-1 victory in the second set. Nayar clinched the final team point shortly after WSU tied up the match at three all in a 6-3 fashion in the third.
"It's tough obviously playing number one for any team, but playing number one In the Pac-12, one of the strongest conferences in the country," said Nguyen Pham. "She's had so many tight matches. It's the same thing we told her, we told all the ladies, you just got to stick with it because if you keep doing the right things at some point you're going to push through and this weekend she had two tight matches but she was on the positive end. Really happy for her, I mean she earns it, and she works so hard and she deserved these wins."

Colorado heads out on the road next to take on Steinberg's alma-mater Arizona Friday at 2:30 p.m., then take on ASU Saturday at noon. The Buffs end the regular season at home against Utah April 16.

Arizona has an 11-10 record but is winless in conference play in seven tries. The Wildcats do boast a 9-3 record at home. Arizona is 2-4 in its last six matches that include a 5-2 loss to Stanford and a pair of 6-1 wins against New Mexico State at home. Gitte Heynemans has a 14-6 record in singles to lead UA, all from the No.5 and No.6 singles spots. Khim Iglupas and Jelena Lukic have 12 and 11 wins, respectfully.
SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS
ASU has a 10-7 record and are 3-3 in conference play. They are 7-2 at home this season. The Sun Devils swept Oregon, 4-0, at home, took down WSU 6-1 and defeated Washington 5-2 on the road. They have since lost to Stanford, Cal, UCLA and USC, though they took No.10 UCLA to a 4-3 decision. The Wildcats take on Utah the day before in Tempe.
Marianna Argokastriti leads the team with a 10-5 record in the No.3/4/5 spots, while Ilze Hattigh is 8-6 in the No.1 spot and ranked 119th. Argokastriti is 12-5 in doubles play, including a 10-0 record in the No.3 spot. She is joined by Sammi Hampton's 11-5 record and 9-0 in the No.3 spot with her.

The Buffaloes (8-11, 2-7 Pac-12) are 6-2 at home and look to keep the momentum going as they try to tie the program-best record of three Pac-12 wins in a season. The Utes come to town with a 7-12 record and are still seeking a win in conference in nine tries.
Colorado has been on a slide but have been led by Maria Campos and Megan Forster who each have three wins in their past 10 matches. Both are the only Buffs with double-digit wins, led by Megan's 11. The Buffs are 2-2 at home in Pac-12 play this season.
Friday's match will mark the last one in Boulder for graduate transfer Fleur Eggink who joined the team from Marquette. The senior has the second-best doubles record on the team with an 8-10 overall record.

"We're just really proud and happy for the ladies," said assistant coach Anthony Nguyen Pham. "We've been dealing with some adversity and today everyone really showed up. We lost a tough doubles point, Utah played well in doubles, but to start singles we really came out with great energy. That translated to a great start on all the courts. Sophia really toughed one out and battled through a really good match. Her opponent played well and we're really happy for Sophia to get through that and that was big for the team."
The Buffaloes (9-11, 3-7 Pac-12) tie the school record for Pac-12 conference wins in a season for the second time under head coach Danielle Steinberg and lock in either the ninth or tenth seed for the Pac-12 Championships. The Utes finish the season with a 7-13 overall record while going winless in conference play in 10 tries.
Campos' history is one of perseverance and hard work. She began the season at the No.6 singles position and did the unthinkable this season, moving all the way up to No.1 singles match.
