No matter what, this all comes down to coaching.
- If Espy is the 2nd best WR on the team, there's been a failure in recruiting, player development and player retention
- If Espy is being forced to play because no one besides McKnight knew the play book (while Simas was suspended and then injured), then the coaches have failed to coach up the better athletes and/or the playbook is too complicated.
- If Espy is playing because the other WRs don't put forth the effort, then there is a coaching failure when it comes to connecting with and motivating top athletes and/or a failure in recruiting to bring in hard working players.
I don't know what to believe. But I do know with 100% certainty that whatever the truth of the situation is, it means that Hawkins has failed. Because the only way that wouldn't be true would be is if you believed that Espy is a front line Big 12 talent and the Colorado offensive system is a sleeping giant ready to pop.
