stats don't lie= JMFL is a defensive GOD

The first time I saw Leavitt was at the Spring Scrimmage prior to the 2015 season (before he had coached a real game at CU). There were like 1000 people in the 50,000 seat stadium, mostly gathered behind the home side bench. The team started the scrimmage with a live kickoff, and as the team was lining up Leavitt went over to the "crowd" and with his arms exhorted everyone to stand up and do the "Hooooooooooooo" thing, like it was a real game, and we did.

It would. I doubt anyone would complain about that move. His defenses at Central Michigan were outstanding.
If I remember correctly, the rumors were flying that he may be our DC before JL was hired and most everyone was pretty cool with it then. Don't think he's done anything but add to his rep since then.

His CU turnaround is arguably more impressive than the K State turnaround, which is difficult to comprehend. He took K State from #93 to #1. He has taken CU from #111 to #11. The year before he got here, we had the same players but never gave up fewer than 36 in a conference game. The last three games we've given up 6, 21,16, and 5.

#11 With this CU team is more impressive than the KjSU stat. CU has played one creampuff and a middle of the road MWC team plus Mich. The Kitties never came close to that kind of OOC schedule. Easy to pad your stats.

Then in conference even the bad teams in the PAC tend to be able to put point points up in bunches.

i really didn't expect this thread to degenerate into a discussion about his prior conduct; i guess i should have. he was fired for the conduct. he paid a high price. it was a long time ago. even his critics admit that he is one of the brightest defensive minds in football. we are lucky he is here and helping us get to where we need to go.

i wish folks would stop worrying, too, about who is staying and who is going at this point in time. we are in the midst of an amazing turnaround here. amazing. our team has a legit chance to win the p12 south, only 4 years after we were getting killed by everyone we played. let's celebrate where we are and enjoy #therise. we're going to be fine again.

here's the deal with coaches coming and going... when you have success, coaches leave. that's really ok. think about the dumpster fire that mm inherited here. and compare and contrast that to now. we have world-class facilities, incredible institutional support, a balanced and well-coached team, with recruiting improving week by week. we have a good staff that works together well. if someone leaves, there will be plenty of choices of guys to come in. please remember that the original coach mac lost great coaches all the time and we still won and won. the program is strong enough to withstand it and getting stronger all the time.

enjoy the ride. seasons like this one, where we get to be feel-good story of the year, happen so rarely. this is a turning point year for us, regardless of what happens in the last 4 games. savor it. there will be plenty of time in the off-season to wring our hands, tear our garments, and cry about changes.

CU hasn't allowed a TD in 7 quarters of Pac12 football. That is incredible.

I worry that no other college town can compete with Boulder creek. Leavett needs Boulder creek to keep him young. It's the fountain of youth. Leavett leaves Boulder and he goes from ripe to rotten overnight.

Leavitt will eventually get another shot at a HC job, IMO. He won't leave for another DC job, though.

Watching Clempson / fsu, and they keep showing venables. His name used to come up in HC conversations, so I did a little looking and found this article

Pay JMFL $1mil. and a truckload of Pepsi, and I think he'll stick around for a while.

Did he really?

It's time, then, for Venables, who has at least 20 years left in a career that began in 1993 as a K-State grad assistant. The list above doesn't include the likes of 59-year-old Texas A&M defensive coordinator John Chavis, who became a millionaire assistant at age 57 in 2013. Nor does it include Virginia Tech's Bud Foster, who surpassed $1 million in 2014 at the age of 57.

Yes he did! Guess who his DC was?

1990–1991Kansas State (LB)
1992–1995Kansas State (Co-DC/LB)

At Kansas State, Leavitt first spent one year as linebackers coach then five more as co-defensive coordinator, sharing the position with Bob Stoops.[1] They led the Wildcats from relative obscurity to having a consistent, highly regarded defense.

My point wasn't that coaching in the no fun league was pointless, but rather that the head coach under which he did it likely didn't add much more or less than <<insert generic NFL coach here>>.

Should have made that more clear.

But hey, it drove discussion.

We were playing a bunch of guys then who are still playing now, and they weren't ready then. Massive improvement was already in the cards. HCMM decided to go to the 3-4 and he recruited all of the key players on this D except the 5th year seniors (Tupou, Kafovalu, Gilbert). HCMM was DC of the year in college football himself. So just can't give it ALL to Leavitt here.

With that said, JMFL deserves a lot of the credit for taking it to the next level and instilling his character into these kids. He'd also be at the top of my list if I was an AD looking for a head coach. Period. The guy is a top 5 football coach in my mind and we are very lucky to have him.

I Love Leavitt! 111 to 11 in less than two years, that alone speaks to his ability. But he also recruits exceptionally well, the players love him and he brings an energy to practice that is unmatched. Losing him will impact the program.

I don't think he's going anywhere unless it's an ideal situation. We need to pay him more, so be it.

Fun fact - the Buffs haven't allowed 100 points through 8 all games this season. Only other team in the Pac under 100 is Washington at 96 (Buffs are at 86). WSU is at 132. Utah is at 168. UCLA is at 148 and Arizona is at 198.
I think you mean in conference play and not through all 8 games. It's still impressive.
