The crowd

Not Sure

Sets low bar, barely exceeds it.

I haven’t seen this mentioned elsewhere and I think it deserves its own thread.

The crowd was outstanding on Saturday. They were loud, disruptive, and the stadium was full. They stuck around until the final seconds ticked off and all sang the fight song when it was over. That was one of the best game day atmospheres we have had in a long, long time.

I'm glad to hear that, because it didn't come across that well on TV.
It came across really really well on the radio broadcast.

It wasn't as rowdy as it can be, mostly due to the cold. They were loud and energetic when necessary though. Plus it was FULL.

Figure a bunch of those folks were casual fans. Folks that rarely come to games or were coming for the first time because they heard about Viska or the fact that we are 4-0 and ranked. We probably picked up a few t-shirt fans on Saturday.

I am totally OK with that. T-shirt fans are good, too.

Part of what hurts for tv is the number of end zone shots. On the north side, those boxes always look empty because of their design and because a lot of times those folks are standing at the top instead of in their seats. On the south side, it's the least filled student sections and also the band is sometimes not there when the camera pans to it.

Oh, I'm not basing it on that. More on how they had it mic'd and how it seemed like the general public were only standing and making noise on third down. Washington last year, the last 3 home games of 2016 and Oregon 2015 people in the lower bowl stood for most of the game.

Ya when they pan to the south endzone at the end of the half, it is pretty bad. Students getting beer, band getting ready on the field, etc.

That's good to hear. I thought the crowd was terrible last friday. When Buffs were on D people were pretty quiet.

The horseshoe area around tbe band was pretty thin on TV in the first quarter.

But after the no-targeting call against K.D. Nixon, the CU fans seemed about ready to boil over. That’s what I saw on TV. The place was lit from Landman’s ejection forward.

From my perspective pacing in front of the couch, the crowd was a factor. It seemed like things could get ugly if the P12 refs made any more controversial calls near the end of the game.

I didn’t see any thing thrown on the field at the refs like oranges, beer cups, marshmallow filled nails, batteries, or water bottles. And the students knew better than to rush the field. But it looked like the potential was there.

What a great chess match of a football game.

Problem with this is, you might miss up to three snaps during the game and be forced to leave.

Interesting that you saw it that way. From my couch it seemed (understandably, given the time and the weekend) like more of a family environment than some other games I can recall.

Students always arrive late. They’ve tried different things to get them in earlier, but they never seem to work.

Student engagement is also not one of RG’s strong suits. He seems to be more preoccupied with fundraising and on-field improvement. I’m not complaining about what he has done, but student involvement is definitely lacking. It seems like it would be a reasonably simple task to assign somebody in the AD the job of improving student engagement. But I digress.

One of the issues CU has, and I've been guilty of it as well, is the the freshmen/soph student sections migrate to the junior + section and totally jam in there, thus leaving a huge gap in the end zone.

CU fans only bring it if they think it's necessary. At no point did anyone think they were in danger of losing to UCLA
Pretty weak sauce in my book.

Free beer before Ralphie runs!!

The sections aren't segregated. There's only a vague sense that 117 is for student athletes, older students, young alums, etc. But the students start filling in with 116 (except the bananas, who seem to like the front row of 114) and go into the end zone. It's first come first serve and not broken up by class

Huh. Was when I was there. Crazy.

I will add that the late leaving crowd made getting out of the parking lots a much more difficult job. When 52,000 people all leave the stadium at the same time, it tends to create a logjam on the streets of Boulder.

And I was totally happy to sit in the traffic.

Another point for the excellence of those doing the interactive media product after each game. The pics and some vids captured stadium areas that were packed.

It’s funny. There were a number of empty seats in my section and scattered around in other sections. But when I watched the recording, the place looked packed.

BTW, three complaints about the game day experience. First, why in the hell cant the upgrade internet access/cell service? Mile High has seemed to figure it out. Coverage there is very good.

Second, where the he’ll are the vendors? Not once did a vendor come up our aisle. And third, why the hell is there a steady flow of people up and down the aisles all damned game. They are oblivious to the game and constantly block people’s view.

The crowd for the UCLA game also looked way better on TV than in person.
