The importance of 2025

I think I will win the lottery before CU has a top tier OL, and I play the lottery like 4 times a year. It’s like it’s this teams kryptonite

We will see how it goes without the Heisman unicorn TH and the deadly accurate SS2. The offense is remedial, the coaching staff is somewhat a turnstile, but thankfully the HS recruiting looks good. I can still see a ceiling of 9 wins and a floor of 6.

I don't think that was my gist. To repeat, next year is when we find out their coaching chops. I don't think they are incapable of growth, but at the same time we have seen some of the same issues continue uncorrected. I think it only natural to wonder.

I think CP has been awesome for CU. I am thrilled with a 9 win season. But I didn't set the bar at dominate, he did. I really hope he gets CU there. I feel free to comment on the hurdles that block that goal.
That's what I thought you meant to write, but what you wrote seemed to imply that the only improvement would come from different coaching hires.

Funny how when Prime wins off superior talent, it's an issue. But when Kirby, Saban, Ryan Day, Jim Harbaugh, James Franklin, etc win off superior talent, well that's just amazing coaching.
Exactly. Or when people say so and so coach couldn't win without this QB. Well, the QB matters and more importantly the talent usually makes the coach in all cases!!!!

Talent is 75% of the equation, Culture and Experience in big games is another 15% of the equation because it is hard to win in a game that you have no experience preparing or performing in. Coaching is 5% of it, whereby you completely strategize or manipulate through gamesmanship a moment in the game where you push the boundaries of the rules. I also believe that 5% of it is Luck related to a call or other factor. Alabama Football, Duke MBB, Connecticut WBB all maxed out the 75% of talent and maxed out culture and big game experiences, so those three coaches just do not have to screw it up.

I think coaching is more like 25% and the Culture/Preparation etc... is also a part of that. If a team loses a few in a row, coaching or a cream puff opponent has to bail them out. If a season is not going to plan (i.e. team plagued by injuries or close losses) this is where they keep the clubhouse engaged. I go back to Lefty's comment above, quoted below.

I mentioned this "coaching chops" concept on another thread. I agree that the CU coaches top to bottom need to show/better their "coaching chops." Our talent is going to be enough to win/compete in all our games, but better coaching can overcome: a shaky QB performance on the road; a game plagued with some ill timed turnovers; a bad 1st period or stretch where CU falls behind; games where they are caught of guard and need to adjust; and just winning close 1 score games. Also, IMO coaching is an area where a team can be a good road team.

Coaching can be the difference of a 5-6 win v. a 10+ win season. IMO, teams that string together a good runs over 5-7 years, it is usually coaching ability and stability. I think we have coaching talent and analysts here, but they need to demonstrate and build/sustain year-after-year. The Oline and play-calling are valid concerns, but through 2 seasons, specifically last year one of Prime/the staffs best attributes is playing a bunch of players, and eventually getting the right players on the field. There will always be booms and busts with recruits or portal players. During year 1 we definitely did not have the Oline talent, but I think we are trending up. TH, SS and others will be big losses for sure, but overall the roster talent continues to incrementally improve.

2025 is a pivotal year. If the team seems to phone it in, the media will spread the “Prime has lost the team” narrative. They play hard and lose, “Prime is not ready or just not able to coach at this level, or not able to coach without ‘his kids’ on the roster”

I think that the talent is there to keep the dream alive in 2025. 7-9 wins…

The goal for 2025 should be to make a bowl game (and hopefully win one, finally). The talent is there. Plenty of P4 teams with less talent than the 2025 Buffs project to have made a bowl this year.

Nah the goal should be to make the Big 12 championship game every year under Prime. There’s no reason why CU in year three shouldn’t be able to compete with anyone in this version of the Big 12, especially when they went out and got Salter.

This feels like a bold prediction after watching Kansas and BYU bully CU on the football field to close out the season.

I don't put much, if any, stock into the bowl game as it pertains to next season. They didn't want to be there and it obviously showed.

They definitely got dominated by KU and weren't ready to play that kind of OL, but they were 7-2 in conference play with one loss coming while holding the lead with 3 minutes to play. They could have easily been 10-2 (8-1) on the season and playing for the Big 12 Championship, just as they could have easily been 8-4 (6-3) with the Baylor win being a loss.

The point is that the Big 12 will never have a clear cut favorite that is head and shoulders above the rest like Texas and OU used to be, and CU has had the #1 overall recruiting class two years in a row in the Big 12. The goal and expectation should be Big 12 Championship every single year under Prime.

One of the things that I strongly believe needs to be cleaned up is the penalty situation. CU has been very undisciplined the last 2 years. Now we don't have a Shedeur who often made it irrelevant for a presnap penalty to start a drive 1st & 15. 2025 team is going to need to be a lot more efficient.

124th (of 134) in penalties per game in 2024
132nd (of 133) in 2023

I wondered if this may have been part of the reason for the change at strength & conditioning. Establishing more discipline from the ground up, especially from the coach that spends the most time with the team.

It sounds petty, but can today’s players stand still and just focus with eye contact and attention. That is discipline.
