The media I wish Colorado had

Last night I drove home listeing to an analysis of the five cadidates for D tackle and how they performed at Utahs spring practices yesterday. Today I drove to work listening to an analysis of the three QB's competing for the starting role and how many snaps and completions each got. I know Colordao has the Broncos and the Avalanche, but would it kill them to actually allow the media to create buzz? It is ironic that practice reports ended when Hawk was killing the program. Would press reports about the super secret style of play we have utilzed in the last five years have hurt the program? I would love for the Denver media to be creating controversy surrounding the Buffs. At this point I am concluding that closed practices and chat surrounding them is just a cruch so bad coaching doesn't get challenged.

Ugh, Denver media is so bad with college sports. Driving this morning and instead of talking about basketball today the clowns were debating if the Broncos should bring in Incognito to help the offense.

Its because there is no room for Buffs Spring Practice reports between talk of Denver's Free Agency, owner's meeting, possible drafting scenario, what Elway had for dinner last night and what underwear Peyton is wearing this morning.

They would even rather talk about what the Nuggets future is or is not, of all things, than talk about college sports. It's ridiculous.

Av's are being successful, Rockies are in Spring Training, and the Nuggets are playing. Denver has a lot more going on than SLC.

Denver sports is all Broncos, all the time. It's only marginally more so when the Broncos are winning. In the McDouche years, it was pretty much the same way. Other than slight diversions into things like fawning over Patrick Roy or criticizing the Nuggets and Rockies, there's no room for anything else.

I THINK that if the Buffs were able to climb into the top ten in either football or mens bb, we might be able to get to Avalanche territory, but with the NFL being almost a year-round media event anymore, there's no way anyone will ever get more than a passing mention in the Denver media.

With success, Buffs can surpass the Avs, Rox and Nugs for local coverage. But even with that, any CU story will play 2nd fiddle to any Broncos news.

Utah only has the Jazz...otherwise it is all college....Colorado is always going to be a Broncos state and really it is a football state so CU football will always get more press when good than CU basketball will ever.

That quality of information is extremely rare.

Here in Oklahoma - OU's practices are closed not only to fans, but also to media. The spring game is so dumbed down that it is totally unwatchable. OSU has even shut down their spring game.

The day of significant information on player rotations, who is playing in practice, etc. is for the most part long gone.

Wrong forum, but the basketball debacle will probably generate more media attention than a win would have.

Was stuck in traffic last night, listening to 102.3.They had a half hour show devoted to DU Lax.6:30 on a Wednesday night,DU lax coaches show.It was Kreckman actually talking sports instead of trying to be a standup comic, which was nice, and props to the program for getting that kind of exposure, but thats a show that belongs on weekend mornings.

Yeah - the media follows the ratings.. so it is a lagging indicator, not a leading indicator of public interest. Colorado loves the Broncos (I do too for that matter), so every channel and station devotes a lot of attention to them.

In football, when the Buffs can start to win 7+ games for consecutive seasons, win some bowl games, pack the stadium for home games, and become a contender for top 10 rankings/national championship games, then broader media coverage should turn towards the Buffs for football.

In basketball (ugh what an ugly loss today), we'll need to be sweet 16 more than once, or get to the final 4, to generate greater fan interest that can drive more media coverage in the major outlets, thus finding more ears and eyeballs and driving more fan interest.

I don't have stats, but I seem to remember that in the late 80s, there was more extensive coverage of CU football on TV and the radio in the national championship game years.

OKC Sports Radio

Frank: I have noticed that since I got back down to OKC this year. I have been listening to the WWLS Morning Animal dudes and Al in the afternoon. Al does talk a lot about OU and recruiting. A lot of basketball for OSU and then mostly Thunder stuff. I'm OK with it. It definitely is better than the jokers in Denver. The crazy thing is that I think they may talk about the good Buffs teams I was on more than anyone in Colorado. Some guy that played at OU back in the 90's was talking about our 94 and 95 squads and how many NFL guys were on those teams. We can't buy that kind of press in CO.

To be fair I doubt that this program is driven by any kind of listener demand. Much more likely they have a sponsor or sponsors who have some special interest in DU Lax and are willing to pay for a show dedicated to it.

Wait, the Avs are getting too much attention?

Yeah, somebody mentioned them once a couple weeks ago without making some lame joke about how hockey is all about fighting. That kind of hype can't be allowed to stand.

I went to a fight once as a kid and a hockey game broke out.

NBA coach told his team they needed better defense.

They all pulled out their lawyers business cards.

Do you really feel like he's operating without pressure right now? Pretty sure you're joking but just want to do a sanity check.

He won four games and signed a class in February that ranked at or near the very bottom of the conference... and plenty of people seem to think he is doing a good to great job. No pressure at all right now.

You obviously understand the difference between fans looking for signs of life in a struggling program and actually being pleased with lackluster results, so I won't belabor that point. However, I sense Big Mac's boss is not going to be very understanding if those kinds of results continue, so I'd think there is some pressure there even without local sports radio shows harping on his recruiting classes and winning percentage post year one.

anyone listen to sports radio today?

I tuned into the Fan on my way home to see if they had anything to say about the CU debacle but they were actually talking NBA and about the Knicks. I think it was a guest they had on but not sure who it was so I turned it off after a few minutes. This was around 3:45 Mtn time

Too many colleges in Colorado. For every fan who wants to hear about CU hoops, there are 9 or 10 others with allegiance to CSU, Metro, DU, Mines! UNC, Regis, Western State, Ft Lewis, Mesa, DeVry, such-and-such community college, or with some Out Of State degree who hates or is indifferent to CU and is turning the dial to hear something else.

Damn. Duff just got pwned.

Probably.

Do wonder if CU fans really can accept legit criticism of MacIntyre in the media though. I would guess not.

I wouldn't accept it from the local media right now. They've got to show me that they actually support the program before I can respect the criticism. Too much baggage with Kizla and Henderson seeming to get their rocks off on bad news from Boulder. Too many guys who I don't trust are sincere and unbiased in their opinions instead of looking for an angle to justify their loss of all journalistic objectivity when Embree was fired.

That said, there are a few I'd listen to. Kensler, Woody, pretty much all of the tv sports anchors. Adam Munsterteiger.
