This Loss is on the Coaches

  • Yep, penalties were bad, especially the late hit on Montez. However, we need to learn to roll with that sort of thing.
  • I don't know who made the decision to let Montez back into the game after that hit but I have to question if it was the right call. He seemed to be very confused on hand-offs and was clearly overthrowing most of his passes.
  • Twice in the second half we drove into SC territory and punted the ball. Given our defense, that was a bad call and is clearly on the coaching staff. We should have either gone for it on forth down of sent out our field goal team. Two more field goals would have won the game.
  • As others have posted, I agree that we should have blitzed on every play and switched to man coverage in the secondary; It couldn't have been any worse.

when they called some blitzes good things happened. If it was a 3 man rush, our only hope was that their guy dropped the ball.
You can't blitz every play, they'll hand off or dump it to #23 who is a gasher. Too often, bad happened to them but then they had someone (often Pittman, guy's a player) wide open for a first down. Their receivers seem to know where the first down markers are...

We played great. Why are we going deep rather than run the ball? We had success all game running it.
I don’t know. Maybe because thelr safeties will crowd the box if they know were gonna run it every snap. Call me crazy.

then there’s the fact that WR is one of the most talented units on the field.

we’re not a complete team. Guys commit penalties but we don’t have the depth to bench them.

They had two deep safety’s a lot of the game

Refs made our job disproportionately harder. Yes we need to be able to overcome, but we’re not good enough to do that. We’re good enough to win ON A GOOD NIGHT and if the stars align. We aren’t masters of our own fate.

Yet.

I will say I’m pretty tired of this kinda team though. Tired of being the PAC12 whipping boy everyone gets to have a great game (and win) against. I want us to make opponents nervous. Not one player we happen to have somehow on our otherwise middlin team, us.

Terrible Q4 play calling and time management. Montez was loopy after the target...just goes to show that QB2 and QB3 are not going to be viable options, atleast this year...even though Senstrom seemed ready to game.

Tucker never challenges any questionable calls. Maybe he sees how biased P12 refs are? The buffs were literally 15 minutes from a big time P12 victory, and it bounced out of their hands like the missed TO opportunities on defense.

Tucker went after the refs a couple of times.

Yeah, the coaches played a big role in losing this one. Players have to shoulder some of it, though. I don't even want to watch football today, rarity for me. I'm still just sick about giving that one away, because that's what happened. I'm probably more pissed about the two punts than anything else. ****ing go for it, what do we have to lose? You want the game, go ****ing take it, they aren't going to give it to you. I pray they learned from this one, that means everybody, yes coaches, you too.

MT seems a bit conservative when it comes to game management for my tastes, but most coaches are.

What does bother me is we seem to be a mess at times. Plays don't get called it or players aren't on the same page. That crap is definitely on the staff and they need to un**** themselves because it happens way too much. Players just seem generally lost sometimes and it looks to stem from the playcalls not getting in properly.

MT being conservative is the one thing I was hoping would've changed. I had a feeling this game would come down to MT going for it on fourth. That wasn't necessarily the case but punting twice inside the 40 and one of those (maybe both) we take a delay of game...wtf? Someone needs to tell MT we play at a mile high and we have a good kicker

Stefanou is accurate, but he doesn't have a big leg. Not sure we were within his range. He's 1-4 lifetime from beyond 50 and we were at the 35 or so? The call was to go for it, expecting the defense to stop anyone when it matters just isn't gonna happen. Maybe at Georgia punting it is the play, but at CU with the 120th ranked defense, go for it.

I agree the call was to go for it, I guess my point was anything but a punt

OK
Finally calmed down
Looked over the stats and game log
There were obvious coaching scenarios that could have gone either way, but Coach Tucker IS THE RIGHT COACH for us!!!
This was another game where we had no turnovers offensively, we played hard for 4 quarters, we are out athleted.
So, if and when we have better athletes (RECRUITING), more S&C like what we have seen this year, and hopefully with experience Coach Tucker makes slightly better decisions, I see us being a factor in the PAC 12. If the coaches were switched last night then the results would be way way different.

I still don't know if I think that was the difference maker in the game. If we miss a kick there or fail to convert on 4th down, USC scores anyway and we've got a little more time to play with. Here's where I think we lost-
1. Penalties-too many. Some of them were questionable, sure (see the late hit on Landman as an example), but I see at least two examples of holding penalties on the OL that killed drives as examples. That's lack of talent.
2. We wasted two timeouts early in the second half for dumb sideline stuff-plays coming into too slow, not lining up properly, etc. We keep those-MAYBE we get the ball back with a minute-ish to go. Still would need a miracle, but its another opportunity That's on the staff.
3. Two fumbles-and they scored on both drives regardless. On the one on the GW drive, they lost 10-putting them in 2nd/20. They got 19 yards on that play. Inexcusable.

I like Tucker a lot still, but I'm wondering about some of these ACs he brought with him. Gotta have better recruiters in spots, and we've also gotta make sure we're putting the talent we do have in the best spots for success. Secondary being a great example-probably their best game of the year and they were helped by having as good a pass rush as we've seen all year. I'd like to see us try and upgrade at some of these spots.

I wouldn't call it the difference maker, but it was one of several. If we recover one of the fumbles, possibly changes the game. If we didn't get penalized here or there, possibly changes the game. If we get a first down there and get into FG range and convert that, possible difference maker. If Montez doesn't get concussed and look like **** after, maybe we win the game. If Stenstrom stays in the game and we run 100% of the time throughout the 4th quarter, maybe we win the game.

I agree some of the ACs just aren't good. The defense is a mess at best and that's with MT bringing several of "his" guys. If he has MM level loyalty for his guys, we might be in trouble. But we don't know yet, he might get rid of his guys faster than we think. I will say Kap has the OL playing quite well, but their penalties are ****ing killing us at times. The false starts inside the 5 are just cringe worthy.

I look at Kap the same way I do Munchak with the Broncos-he's a damn good Offensive Line coach, and he's got that "O-Line Jesus" type of rep that Munchak has. He's not a miracle worker though, and some of what we brought back a) isn't very good to begin with and b) has been FUBAR'd by Klayton Adams on top of that the last couple years.

Mel himself has to take some blame for the defense because he wanted to go all in with the UGA type scheme right away. We don't have the talent to run it, and I also think there was a way to put Landman and Davion Taylor in particular in the type of spots there were in last year that allowed them to make plays. Hadn't really noticed either until last night. We've got two ACs with secondary position responsibilities (One of whom is Summers) and we've got one of the worst secondaries I've ever seen. There's only so much that can be explained away with "Hey, we just don't have a ton of depth".

The offense has been inconsistent at best-with the Fusker game and last night being cases in point. In both, there have been spots where Johnson looks like a genius......and then a defense makes a slight adjustment and he can't figure out how to respond to it.

We wouldn’t be having this conversation if we recover the fumble on their game winning drive. We had the sack, the ball on the ground and we missed our chance seal the game.
MT is the right coach. If we can recruit some playmakers on defense we will be fine.

Agree 100% run the ****ing ball when we were in USC territory in the 4th and game over. Coaches are always over thinking and outsmarting themselves. The players deserved this game, coaches ****ed it up.

And the situation that stands out the most is the 3rd and 4 with a little over 6 minutes left at the USC 38. In that situation it should be 4-down territory so run it twice to try and make 4 yards. Instead we have Montez pass on 3rd down and then double-down on that bad call by deciding to punt on 4th.
