So I guess this should be in the recruiting forum, but it's kind of negative so I figured I'd post it here. Does anyone have a theory on why most of our recruits have very little offers if any? Like we don't even seem to be going against MAC or WAC schools for them, but Western Kentucky and Samford?

That's not really an attack on the recruits either, which is actually why I'm perplexed. Some of these guys seem to have pretty good tape and a lot of them have good size and speed measurables. Take Cordary Clark for example, the guy is apparently 6'2 and 220 pounds, runs a 4.56 laser timed 40 yard dash, has good tape and lives in Alabama, the heart of the SEC. I mean.. Troy isn't even in on this guy?

Also, I don't mean this as in, why are we recruiting like this? I think we all realize we have somewhat of a lame duck coach and went 3-9 in year 4, recruiting is going to be pretty rough. I'm just wondering why they look like players to me, but yet seem to not have one inkling of interest from decent schools.
 
Yeah it seems like grades is a pretty common theme, but I don't know it seems like size is really only an issue with Canty. Trea Jones had an injury.. anyone else? Torres seems like a good player with size and speed, good grades, but the only other offer is from Wyoming. Tony Jones apparently has grade issues, but nobody else cared enough to bother to follow up on this guy? Are his grades that bad or what? Donnie Duncan seems like a player, only other offers from New Mexico and Washington State. It just seems really weird to me because it doesn't seem like these guys are just garbage prospects, I'd think their videos would at least garner some attention from smaller regional schools.
 
All things considered I am surprised we have done as well as we have. Almost every one of these guys has some kind of risk attached. Injuries, grades, low profile schools or competion, etc. At the same time what did we expect. This is a team that is coming off consecutive 3-9 seasons with a coach who many expected to be fired last year. Players look at CU and see a team that hasn't been winning with a coach who hasn't shown any kind of upward trend on the field and a high likelyhood of losing his job this year. They don't know who will be coaching them in the future, what the system will be, and for the most part who they will be playing with.

I think that Hirschman will easily be the best QB recruit we have had under Hawk and maybe for a good period before that, if Munchie comes then we will have two quality QB prospects.

If Jones and some others get their grade issues handled they could be steals and game changers. A lot of the others look like late developers who took steps up in their games after other schools had already formed their target list.

Truthfully a lot of these guys may never turn out but when (if) Hawk's replacement gets here these guys will form a core of the team for a year or two.

The class is nowhere near competitive compared to the rest of the Big XII as it looks right now but all things considered it could be much worse as well.
 
The guys who commit early, it's always tough to take too much from their offer list. I know first hand that Tyler Strong (Niwot) was getting all kinds of calls from coaches and he just said no thanks and they went away. He's certainly not reporting any additional offers on Rivals other than Wyoming for example. I put Slavin, Uzo-Direbe, Williams and Bell a bit in that camp. Certainly there were others willing to offer Hirschman, but he only shows Harvard.

And then some of it is you are out there scouring the sticks looking for diamonds in the rough. If a guy has 10 scholly offers from the MAC type schools, it's likely his film was out there and he went to camps, and probably got scouted by Rivals and Scout. He's not a secret, and there's a reason he has no offers from Ohio State and Michigan.

On the other hand, a guy like Griffon is hidden on a run-oriented team. Maybe he is a secret? Ultimately, his recruiters only have tape and local legend to go by. There's not a lot of tape on Griffon. These things are not risk free. They can't bring him to campus and work him out.

Look no further than Hemschoot's recruiting saga. The guy may have signed with Northern Colorado if he didn't get that tape out late. Speedy is another example.

I'm pretty sure we'd all rather be taking kids from Pac-10 and Big-12 Powers than going this route. But we aren't there right now, so this is the strategy.

Note: CSU is doing the same thing. I read their list of 27 commits have 4 BCS offers between them. Many of those kids have no other offers. When you start recruiting "potential", the pool of kids is pretty massive. Needless to say the top tier schools reduce their risks by not having to do as much "projection".

That's a good point I had not thought of. It just seemed so odd to me that here we are offering all of these guys, certainly some of them coming with different risks, but they seemed like pretty good players. How can no other decent teams be after these guys? You guys know what I mean? Like Speedy had the MAC after him, he was just tiny. I would think with who we were recruiting we'd be fighting off those types of teams that have to get the guys that slip through the cracks. Instead it's just like nothing or some really obscure school.

I suppose I should clarify that I'm getting at the guys we have been getting recently. I agree on the early guys, Hirschman in particular sounds like he would definitely have had some offers if he held off committing.

True but they have a ton of kids from florida and texas. That's not a bad thing. They have recruited some good speed also.

Grades are an issue with Jones, Duncan, Clark, and others. Size is an issue with Canty, Lewis (grayshirt), and Harrington.
 
maybe they are gun-shy of prima donna hs superstar recruits. perhaps this is an illustration of the lunch pail work ethic. doubt it will work
 
In all honesty, the recurring theme that I see with this class from a football standpoint is: FLEXIBILITY.

I can't remember the last time we had so many players that seem to be legitimate multi-position players. We have two types of QB's, many H-Back/TE types, several WR/DB types, a couple LB/DE types, both freshman OL seem the athletic type that can move anywhere we need them to.

All that adds up to a class that can be molded to fit into any new coaching system, whether it is implemented by Hawk or another HC.

I suppose it is the best case scenario considering what little "elite" talent we had committed, then subsequently lost after the Hawk-firing-debacle.

Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but it definitely seems like the strategy is "transition" for this class.

Hmm interesting take. I don't mind taking the athlete/tweener types. I just don't like when a class is full of these types of players.
 
Over half have grade issues? And that's the reason no one else is offering them?

Well, with our admission requirements being so much more strict than most others, we can forget about them coming here, right?
