TN VOLS fans coming to UCLA/Colorado game

Hey Buffs!!!

Apparently, I am a little slow in providing you guys a review of our trip. I apologize for that. I didn't take my laptop to Colorado, got back at Midnight Monday night and just getting settled in for the night now. So here ya go....

Thanks for having us Vols fans! Boulder is beautiful. We hiked up the Flatirons (more like halfway up) around lunchtime. It was a spectacular hike with great views. Thanks for that recommendation. We ended up at Back Country Pizza for lunch before heading over towards the stadium before the game.

We were a little worried when we got to the stadium about 3 hours before kickoff. It was pretty dead. We are accustomed to tailgating starting around 7AM, no matter what time kickoff is slated for. We ventured over to the South side of the stadium and was able to pick up some Buffs stickers and watch Ralphie get unloaded. That is quite a process to control a couple ton beast!

We then headed to the practice field. That is a cool area for tailgating and if I was a fan, that's where I would want to be so my kids could run and play on the field before the game. Your stadium may be the nicest stadium I have seen from the outside. The facade is very well done and matches the rest of campus. We had a few beers from the local brewery that was pouring from a keg and then checked out the indoor practice area. Some of your fans invited us over for food and a beer, we met the President of the University and then Gary Barnett started calling us out on his radio show. After his show, Coach came over and talked to us for a few minutes. He said Knoxville was one of his favorite spots to visit when he was calling games on TV.

We found tickets from some of you guys at the tailgate. Thanks to everyone who came over to say hi. StormTrooper, Clean Undies and I forget who else.

Your stadium is pretty awesome. There isn't a bad seat in the house. We ended up gathering all together in the South end zone to watch for awhile and then bounced around to check out the other areas.

The biggest thing I learned was, you need to make the guys who lead Ralphie trade in their cowboy hats for a helmet. Those are the fastest dudes on the field!

I spent some time in the field house, but never waited in line. Those lines were crazy long at all times. I'm disappointed I didn't get a Buffs cup, I have collected those from the stadiums I have been too. I also never found a apparel store, book store, etc to buy some Buffs gear. The Buffs have one of the best logos in college football and I came home with only a coozie and a sticker.

I made my way up to the top of the West side for awhile and talked with the security guard. He was super nice and answered lots of questions for me.

We had been up since 3AM Mountain time, so we headed out in the 4th Q when the Buffs opened it up. We stayed down in Westminster, easy drive.

Air Force was a totally different atmosphere but had its own great traditions. We did meet the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, 4 star general, at a tailgate. You don't get much higher ranked than that guy!

Golf at The Club at Ravenna in Littleton was beautiful. Lots of elevation change, saw some Mule Deer (which I didn't know was a real animal) and 2 black bears on 18 fairway. If you get a chance to play it, don't pass it up!

CommonGround Golf Course was a great, fun layout as well. Wide fairways, big undulated greens designed by Tom Doak. I shot my lowest round ever there, so I'll always be a big fan of it! It takes awhile to adjust to the ball traveling 10% farther than it does in the South.

Again, thanks for the hospitality and the recommendations. Go Buffs and Go Vols!!

If you guys decide to come to a Tennessee game, hit me up.

Yes, but did you eat any edibles and if so, how'd that go?

A four-star is the 3rd highest rank in CO. After Elway and McCartney

That’s our local term for chicks, in case that was unclear. And pic, please.
Given my experiences with people from Tennessee, you're probably going to get a pic similar to this

A good use of time for your trip. Sounds like you had a really good experience before the game. Since the game was on a Friday night there was not going to be a lot going on that early before the game. Shame you missed out on the apparel, there are stores (or stands rather) in the north side of the Fieldhouse, and on the southeast side of the stadium just outside one of the entrance tunnels. We do sell souvenir cups, but I notice the concession stands don't advertise it on the menu now. If you want to private message me I can hook you up with a few.

What was your view on the atmosphere at AFA?

Some of the things this trip report points out is exactly what we've been talking about in other threads:

1 - CU has some innate things going for it that are elite with the beauty of the campus, the beautiful setting, the great town and the Ralphie tradition.
2 - The stadium is configured great for sight lines (and, while not mentioned, noise level for a mid-sized stadium).
3 - Our tailgating scene is below par, but the move that was made with Franklin Field was a huge improvement. Particularly with doing the Ole Miss system of having a group that does setup and catering gear for the tents. Need the lots across the creek to come up and to develop an RV lot as part of our scene that could start partying a day or two before the game.
4 - Our amenities are lacking in terms of concessions, team stores, etc.

The game day experience could be the best in the country if RG can pull off what he has planned. So much to build upon that no one else has.

No! No! Not the RVs!!!

As much as I bash anything Vols, they do have an amazing seems like week long tailgate on the river through town called the Vol Navy. Last time I was there I went from having dinner at Calhouns (solid rib joint on the river) to walking from boat to boat with everything covered in acid trip orange and everyone wearing clothing that rivals the annual Home Depot convention. They do know how to tailgate in Knoxville.

Getting to a game two hours early with some coolers, versus renting out an RV, are two vastly different things.
Have you ever been to Sackygate? Come meet me at one of these about 2 hours early and lets take a walk and share perspectives. I would be fascinated to share with you and better appreciate where you are coming from.

I don't go to every home game, so we would need to plan ahead. But if you are up for it, I think this would be educational for both of us.

Plus, meeting and spending time with good Allbuffers is always time well spent!

PS - I promise. No face humping by the grill will be involved. Unless you are in to that sort of thing.

I’ll certainly take you up on that.

My thought is, let’s worry about getting 50k to every home game and then we’ll worry about RVs. You read the trip report from the UT guys. They couldn’t believe how sparse the tailgate was.

You are not wrong on priorities, completely agree!

We can’t copy the south with our tailgating because we don’t have a fan base with that mentality. There’s no demand for an RV lot 2-3 days before kickoff of a CU game.
This is true as well, but current RV parking at CU is theoretically limited to game day arrival and game day departure. Not any different than standard tailgate lots. I know from observation this isn't enforced in an absolute, but it is wildly discouraging for your typical RVer to see those restrictions and want to pull your camper in to the campus.

What is our opportunity? I can tell you this much: I took my camper to Mile High twice for games but never once considered it for CU games, based on policies. Am I a voice of one, or a voice of thousands of potentially engaged fans?

****, I don't know. But we should figure it out.

I remember as a kid the RV’s on Franklin Field. The north end of FF was filled with them.

As kids, after the game while those RV’s were pulling out of FF, we would jump on the ladders on the back end of them and ride them out of the lot.

I would say that the tailgating on FF was way more intense than what we have after the transformation. Not that I don’t like what we have now, especially since I’m older but, FF had some epic tailgating scenes before it became what it is now. In some ways, IMO, it was better then.
