Ellis and Sumler showed some nifty moves, power, and escapabilility. Cody seems like the guy but Nelson had a very nice drive capped with a TD to Solder on a pretty bootleg. i wouldn't say Cody locked the job down (provided it's still up for grabs).
D was pretty vanilla. Hugh looked good to me.
Celestine made some nice plays, i thought.
some spotty ball handling on a kickoff and a punt back to back. FG kickers were accurate.

The question now is- Is the offense that good? or is the Defense that bad?
Hypo was out of action along with Brace, Geer, Herrod and Yates. And did anyone else see Josh Smith slam into the wall at the end of the enzone? Man. I hope he's alright.

Josh Smith hit the wall hard but he was back in there playing a few series later.
I thought Nelson had the better scrimmage but Cody wasn't horrible and Nelson IMHO wasn't so much better that it would move him into the starting job.
Hugh Charles had some good runs but Sumler to me looks like a special player. I think he's going to be very good. He's exciting to watch.
Patrick Williams dropped two balls while Josh Smith had three catches and should be a starter. He's THAT good. Celestine had a nice catch and broke a tackle for another 15-20 yds. Simas played with the 3rd team and I'm willing to bet he's redshirted.
CU had a weapon with #92 TE Solder. Almost 6 ft 9 - he caught an easy goalline TD and then later got deep and caught a 35-40 pass setting up an easy score. He's impressive-
I went to the scrimmage last year and there's no comparison to how much better the Buffs offensive looks now. I'm not saying CU goes 12-0 but I do think this team will be fun to watch. Beat csu and the confidence will grow by leaps and bounds.

i can't say that i agree about cody having a lock on the job at this point, i thought nelson showed some good poise and he has a nice arm. cody probably has a little better command of the offense though.
sumler is the guy who impressed me. that guy is going to be a stud in our offense, he reminds me of a beinemy type of runner...always churning forward...i also liked what i saw out of josh smith, except when he hit the wall in the southwest endzone..
surprisingly, i was a little surprised that the defense wasn't as sharp as i thought they would be, although they came out with more fire after the break.
special teams looked good on the fg unit and the punting unit was decent, better than last year. i am worried a bit about the kickoff unit, of course we have been spoiled in the past couple years with that group...
i would say they are lightyears ahead of last year, and miles ahead of this spring...i came away feeling good about the communication i heard on the field and with the coaching staff...
now...

agree about Sumler. i left feeling pretty upbeat. still in the 6 win over/under camp, but optimistic for the future.

Offensive Breakdown
I'm no coach, but this is what i took from the scrimmage today. Keep in mind this was just a scrimmage. They were running alot of basic plays out there. Except for Lockridge's halfback TD pass to McKnight. :thumbsup:
QB's- Cody has great touch on his passes. He's very accurate. The only problem besides the picks was when he didn't know which way the offense was going and had to waste a TO.:lol: Nick didn't do a bad job but he'll need alot more than what he's showing us if he wants to unseat Hawkins. Ballenger is very impressive. He made a few mistakes. But thats expected from a freshmen. He'll be a stud once Hawk molds him. Overall i am happy because you can tell they have implemented more of the playbook this year. That says alot about the QB's imo.
RB's- Hugh had an OK scrimmage. He has so much potential to be an impact player but it doesn't seem to be there. Grimes and another coach really ripped him for a missed assignment during the scrimmage. BTW an OK day for Hugh would be a big day for any other rb here. I set the bar higher for hugh cause i know he can be a force. I am not trying to bash him. Ellis ran well today which was a nice suprise. He just needs to stop dancing out there and hit the hole. If he keeps it up he will have a good year. Moyd is also doing well. He is very quick as we all know, but he isnt known for being a good 'practice player'. But this year is different. I think Hagan has really done a great job with him and the results showed up at the scrimmage today. Lockridge really looks awesome out there. Special teams aside he really runs well and doesn't go down easy. He had the play of the day when he competed a TD pass to McKnight on a halfback pass.:thumbsup:
WR's- The star of fall camp has been Josh "J-Fly" Smith. He gets good separation from the db's and catches anything thrown his way. He juked Cha'pelle Brown out of his cleats on a reverse that should've been a loss of yardage. Instead he gained ten yards. He's showing good effort out there. This kid will start Sept. 1st. Patrick Williams. I know he can be a great player but like the coaches said "he's streaky" He will catch everything thrown his way, then he'll go into these funks. like today. But I still stand behind my prediction that he'll step up and have a great year. Celestine is also doing a good job. He went up and caught a very poorly thrown ball. Simas hasn't really shown up that much. He's not doing a bad job out there. But he's not really shown us anything like Smith has. Not much to say about Sprague either. Not bad. But not great. Overall a HUGE improvement from last year.
TE's- Geer was out of action today. Not sure what for. but he's the starter. Didn't see much of Sanders out there. But he's a good TE. Solder had a good day out there. But I don't think anyone is too worried about the tight ends. DeVree had a nice TD catch. He didn't really do well last year. Keep in mind he played with Tony Scheffler at Western Michigan and he was a 2004 second-team all-Mid American Conference selection and John Mackey Award watch list candidate, as well as a 2003 Freshman All-American (second team) by The Sporting News
OL-Huge. They are playing really well. Maiava will see alot of playing time this year. They have him lining up at G. Miller? Was there really any doubt this kid was not going to be a stud? He's huge. He has been seeing alot of time at G also. Sanders is a good fit at C. Havent really seen too much out of Tau. But he'll be a good one. I expected more out of Behrens. But its still early. Overall they are really playing well together. It all starts up front. Everyone has been talking about the other positions and how they look great. The Oline is the reason the offense has been looking great.
Again this is jmo.

OL realy has my attention this year! I wanted to hear more about Fataagi,Behrens,Head,Polumbus,Harrison! What are you thoughts?

The updated depth chart is out. It says Josh smith is injured and Alvin Barnett has been suspended. The OL is Polumbus, Palaazi, Sanders, Head and Harrison. I am sure we will see alot of freshmen out there this season.

It was a fun scrimmage to watch and I walk away without any real concerns on offesnse.
-The wide receivers have playmakers and will perform. If Patrick Williams doesn't step up, it is obvious that the freshmen are more than happy to jump in and ignite the offense. (J-Fly - get well really quick - we REALLY need you!)
-The O-line looks pretty good including the young guys. Can't wait to see them in action against other teams
-Running back - I expect at least the same out of Hugh but look forward to seeing what Sumler can do. He looked real good and fights for everything he can every time he touches the ball. I really liked Lockridge - he hits the hole many times faster than any of the running backs but appears to be a bit out of control right now - he will be real good.
-QB is in ggod hands with either Nick or Cody. I thought Nick actually looked better yesterday, but overall they are both playing well. Sounds like Cody is the starter and that works for me - I like his leadership.
-TE - I just want to see Solder going for jump balls in the red zone against some short DB's. TE's will be solid.
My discomfort lies in the defense. It is hard to gauge right now and we'll have to see what they do against the competition. Too many guys were out yesterday to tell how good we will be. We are just so thin at LB right now - we can't afford any injuries. I think they will be fine but its hard to tell if our O is that good or is our defense struggling that much.
