The air hummed with nervous excitement as 700 runners, including Carl Solomon, positioned themselves on the starting line of the Leadville 100. It was 4 a.m. on a crisp, moonlit Saturday morning. If all went well, the ultrarunners would cross the finish line by 10 a.m. Sunday, a life-changing 30 hours later.
