Because they've always wanted to be the Big East + the NC schools & UVA?

Edit: As an old Big East fan, I'm just bitter.

Notre Dame definitely has a lot of "ACC" in them. Gene Corrigan remains influential. There's definitely a kind of fraternity of UNC/Duke/Notre Dame/UVA guys that wield some power and influence in the ACC offices.
