USA Today has CU ranked as the 99th-best team in the nation

RG isn't an innocent bystander in all of this. He chose to extend MM after the 2016 season, but not find the funds to keep the Clark and Leavitt on board (not saying this would have been easy to do). He chose to stick with MM after last season's let down, and he will ultimately decide what direction to go in after this season, depending on the results. RG is the leader of the entire Athletic Department and is ultimately accountable for the performance of the football program. If he's not happy, go find some big time donors and sell them on the idea of the next coaching staff being big money, home run hires.

Leavitt is the 2nd highest paid DC in the country to Brent Venables. I'm not sure we could have matched what Oregon was offering had we tried. I think sticking with MM after last year made sense, but this is put up or shut up time for this staff. They've gotta get to a bowl to get to 2019. That simple.

Maybe not, but it is silly to say anything after 30 does not matter.

Your whole philosophy seems to center on ignoring any bad numbers.

Its not ignoring bad numbers, it is just paying attention to statistics. Silly is taking these rankings all the way out to 130 seriously.

We sucked last year. While I expect us to be much better this year, we suck until we prove otherwise (on the field).

I understand, but the comment I was responding to made it seem like RG didn't know what he signed up for, when ultimately, he is responsible for the current state of the football program, including recruiting.

RG chose not to find the $600,000 to keep Leavitt? Okay. Whatever.

I think just looking at various numbers for last year can quickly tell the story of a bad defense and a pretty inefficient offense. If that means taking those stats "seriously," so be it.

Sure they tell a quick story...but you can't get hung up over the rankings among teams that have never played each other. The least wrong comparisons would be those made within the PAC12 conference.

In what way?
1. Sticking with a head coach and staff that he didn't hire through his first 3 years, even though the program went 10-27 with 2 Pac 12 wins over those 3 seasons.
- Not saying this was a negative, as his faith and patience was rewarded in 2016
2. Choosing to extend MM's contract after 2016... As a fan, I loved it at the time, but some people had the bigger picture in mind and felt it was probably not a wise move to do that after one season.
3. Started the Drive for 105 and has raised a ton of money for the program and AD... Got the Champions Center and IPF built.
4. Has played a role in helping (emphasis on helping) get Leavitt to Boulder by going to bat with the administration.
5. Along with Lance Carl, recommended Chev to MM
6. Played a pretty big role in the Tumpkin DV reporting saga
7. Assuming he played a role in getting the multi-year contracts approved for ACs

There have been positives and negatives to RG's actions as they relate to the current state of the football program, and I would say he's done a lot more positive than negative. That doesn't change the fact that he is the head of the Athletic Department and is ultimately accountable for the performance of the athletic programs.
