USC ALMOST A Game Thread - Covid Cancelled

Absolutely. Right now the entire CU team is staying at a hotel in a "bubble" of sorts and being tested/contact traced everyday. That would absolutely not be happening if the season was cancelled.
Is that still the case? I know they were there for 2 weeks, then I saw somewhere 3 weeks. If they are still there, that goes a long way in ensuring our numbers are zero/low. If we learned anything during this year, it’s that bubbles do work (thank you Paul Rabil and the PLL for coming up with the idea that other leagues quickly jumped on and took credit)

Will HCKD have players stay local this weekend? Organize activities? Keep them off streets.

CSU going to Wyoming has no real advantage. They just played, CSU won which makes the fans who actually pay attention happy.

The MWC doesn't have a great media deal and no national broadcaster would have picked up the game, thus without fan in the seats no real revenue.

For CSU or Wyoming a trip to Boulder would probably result in a beat down, neither is much good this year.

It would though result in a payday and that could be very important in a year with virtually no ticket sales and for two programs that don't get huge media money.

IIRC the MWC distributes about $3.5 million per team in media money

For context the B1G last year paid out about $56 million per school, the SEC about $43 million, B12 about $40 million, the ACC about $30 million (plus $6.8 to Notre Dame,) and the PAC about $32 million. Those are averages as most of the conferences distribution was not exactly equal between all teams.

Bottom line for a MWC team is that taking a late road game against CU would make a much bigger impact on their budget than another P5 school would see.

Even if the fee were say $350,000 that would be a 10% boost in revenues for the year, huge for schools that are struggling to compete at the BCS level already.

I use the $350,000 figure because the typical payout for a G5 school playing at a P5 school usually runs between $350,000 and $700,000. The host school though normally expects to recoup this fee not only with TV money but also with ticket sales and stadium revenues. Since those won't be a factor I went to the low end of the scale.

For CSU or Wyoming anything they get would be almost pure profit since they wouldn't have to pay normal travel cost. They would probably put the team up in a hotel but transportation would be by bus and other expenses would be minimal.

If they don’t play, this should be treated like a normal game weekend, IMO. Take them to a hotel Friday night, come back Saturday and maybe do a light scrimmage. It can’t be treated like an actual bye week giving them the next 3 days off

I wonder if that means CU and CSU have a deal in place and just waiting for the USC/Utah game to be officially on?
Reading somewhat between the lines, it would appear that Wyoming is only interested in playing a home game. Perhaps CSU told them to shove it? They could do the same with us, I suppose.

I would like to see the game played, but I think forces are conspiring against it.

Yeah, I think all three Schools are probably wanting a home game since they all had one initially and aren't budging on that. I'd be highly shocked if CU played this weekend at this point.

Isn't COVID-19 transmission even higher up there than it is in this state? Maybe CSU told them playing us is lower risk for them than going to Laramie.

How big of a deal is that? We can't have fans, and CSU's stadium has been empty for their games AFAIK.

I better prepare myself with a weekend without Buff football. I have to believe if CU were going to play an OOC opponent it would have been announced by now.

So typical of CU luck. Rolling along, get the rug pulled out from them, then have to play the toughest game of the season after potentially losing the momentum.

I don't see how a home game against a nobody helps CSU or Wyo as much as a chance to play on a national broadcast.

Especially CSU - that game will get a little national buzz as a "traditional" game that was shut down by covid but is now suddenly back on.

I don't understand the home game issue. Go play at Hughes if we need to (or Folsom...really it doesn't matter). It's not like there is any fans or any measurable home field advantage being that they are an hour up the road. If the rub is relation to TV revenue and how that is paid, it seems to me that a conference call with all interested parties could fix it. Everyone gets paid if there is a game. $0.00 is available to split with no game.
