Visiting from wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

10 years ago I took the ferry from Dublin to Holyhead and it arrived after the hostel had locked up for the evening, so I spent the night in the Holyhead Ferry terminal. I think every person I saw could have broken me in half with one punch. Didn't get much sleep that night.

Thank you very much , would highly recommend coming to wales it’s great (if you don’t mind the terrible weather)
We'll be in Wales for 5 days in May. Cardiff then the Pembrokeshire coast (Tenby). Any must visits other than typical tourist stuff?

Check out the Center for Alternative Technology if you're near it. If you like Indian food, lots of good options. Also try lawn bowling.

I think Ligma is one of the really good Indian restaurants there.

My husband and I were supposed to go to Wales in 2021. Omicron issues screwed that up, unfortunately.
Holy ****. Are you the whitest person that's ever lived?
According to 23andme, I think *I* am the whitest person that ever lived. 99.5% northwestern European, with most of it being British Isles. Really killed off some of the interesting family stories that had been shared of Native ancestry (a whopping 0.2%) and immigrants from other countries.

To be fair, the remaining 0.3% was Senegambia and Congolese so perhaps I don't win. But I sure look like it with my white-as-heck complexion.

Never had the nerve to take one of those tests. We’ve mapped out ancestry going back a long ways. Too terrified of finding some recent surprises.

I've never been interested because I don't care. Unless there's a chance it wouldn't come back 100% human. It would be cool to be the subject of an Ancient Aliens episode.

Having lived in Europe for years and read a massive amount of history, I am interested in my family’s story. I think there are a lot of people who care too much. If you’re getting a shamrock tattoo, you care too much.

My mom gave Rebecca and me the test about 10 years ago for Christmas. Rebecca didn’t take it because she didn’t want to be put on a list. I didn’t take it because it seemed like a lot of work. I just rediscovered them a couple of weeks ago and threw them out.

I would have had a half black, Asian, or middle eastern guy take guy it and send her back the results with the subject line “WHAT DID YOU DO?!?”

We just sent off our 23 and me samples last week. I didn't really want to, but our SIL gave them as a gift.

Don't care much what it comes back with.

Two family stories:

1. You had to be slightly smarter than average to figure it out from the report, but... my sister and one of our cousins did one of those and it confirmed what some of us had long ago deduced: my aunt's dad was not my grandfather.

I talked to my sister about it and she summed it up well: "I think <cousin 1> is smart enough to figure what what this report means, but she won't say anything, the other two won't understand."

2. My brother in law got a girl pregnant when he was 15-16. The family of the girl basically paid him to go away. Decades later he married my sister (different sister from story above). He had told her about this episode.

He took the test, and actually got reunited united with his (very much adult - in his early 30s (my older sister is a few years older than me)) son.

He and my sister were both aware that this outcome was possible, I and my other sister were a little bit, well, shocked is a good word.

Anyway, it was absolutely flabbergasting to meet him. Obviously grew up with zero influence. On the "nature vs nurture" question, it was all nature. He looked like him, he talked like him, he had the same sense of humor and laugh, nearly identical interests and profession.

It was literally like meeting my brother in law, but 15 years younger.

My mind is still blown when I reflect on it.
