Volleyball- 2018/19 off-season news & awards (Black & Gold scrimmage, Sat. 8/24, 3:00)

For any insomniacs or world travelers looking for something to do/ watch, Colorado is playing its 2nd match in China starting at (around***) 1:00 AM MT.
(***The 1st match had a pretty lengthy pre-game which included speeches and (impressive) dance, so started quite a bit later than the listed time. No idea if that might also be the case for this match.?.)

The below contains a link to the stream.

There are also some videos (Instagram Stories) and so forth on the CU Buff (https://www.instagram.com/stories/cubuffsvb/) and NCAA Volleyball (https://www.instagram.com/stories/ncaavolleyball/) Instagram accounts. (Volleyball's 1st tweet said the match was going to be on Instagram, but from the above tweet that evidently changed.)

The Buffs lose the 1st set 20-25 with some passing issues the 2nd half of the set against what looks like some pretty tough serving by the Chinese squad.

As in the 1st match, the 1st set has the a more veteran lineup for the Buffs. It does seem like in this one they started off rotating the setters in a 6-2 more consistently than in the 1st match, then had to go to a 5-1 late when, I assume, they ran out of allowable substitutions.

The 2nd set, where the Buffs went younger, went 14-25 or so to the Chinese team, while the Buffs came back and won I believe something like 25-20 in the 3rd. Unlike match #1, they are going to be playing a 4th set in this one.

The match is over. Looked like it was a great opportunity for Coach Mahoney to try many different combinations of players against what looked like a talented opposing team (that also was doing some subbing).

the Chinese team had 17 aces and Buffs had trouble hitting with Demure and Clayton hitting good but as a team they hit around .100.

Looks like the Buffs want to stay in China, as the 1st set is a marathon they end up winning 34-32.

Article after the final match in China.

Sounds (and looked to me) like serve- receive was the major issue once again for the team. (They experimented with many different line-ups over the course of the 4 sets (and this whole Chinese tour), so hopefully as the team gets more practice in this summer, and when they find the needed stable 3-6 players to handle the passing duties during matches, that problem won't continue to plague them when the regular season starts in a little over 2 months.)

BEIJING – Despite a nearly 20-20 performance from Justine Spann, the University of Colorado women's volleyball team fell to Minzu University three sets to one (32-34, 20-25, 22-25, 23-25) Wednesday for the final match in China.

Spann had a huge performance from the opening set on with 24 total kills, a .314 hitting percentage and 18 digs. Elissa Alcantara also had an outstanding day hitting with a team-high .474 hitting percentage with nine errorless kills.

The serve game ended up being the largest difference in the match as Minzu put down an outstanding 20 aces and CU added the troubles with a dozen service errors. Without the service differences the stats heavily favor Colorado who hit .290 as a team and held their opponent to just .194. CU also had a dozen blocks compared to just three.

Note- Don't believe the top ranked (#54 in her class per Prepvolleyball.com) incoming freshman for the Buffs, outside hitter Jill Schneggenburger, played at all in this match. When they quickly showed the bench a couple times, I believe it was her that looked to be wearing some kind of good-sized wrap and/ or cast on her left hand (and/ or wrist?). Best wishes to her having a complete, speedy, and not too painful or inconvenient recovery. Hopefully it's just a relatively minor thing.

Looks like today (or soon thereafter) should be volleyball schedule release day, as at LEAST 3 Pac schools (Stanford, UCLA and Oregon) have released their schedules over the last few hours. (As usual for almost all my volleyball "news", props to the volleytalk forum (http://volleytalk.proboards.com/board/5) for the news and links.)
(Edit- looked quick, and the Buffs and Arizona are the only 2 Pac schools that haven't released their schedules.)

Note- From Oregon's schedule, looks like it will be the Ducks and Beavers the Buffs only play once in the traditional 20 match Pac 12 conference schedule, with the Buffs probably visiting Corvallis after Salt Lake City to start the conference schedule, while the Ducks and Utes will probably be visiting Boulder to end the season.)

Colorado Releases 2019 Schedule

https://cubuffs.com/news/2019/6/24/volleyball-colorado-releases-2019-schedule.aspx

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's volleyball team announced the 2019 volleyball schedule Monday afternoon.

Colorado will play 17 home matches, including a match against UCLA Oct. 13 that will air on ESPN2. The 2019 Black and Gold inter-squad scrimmage kicks off the action in Boulder Aug. 24 at 3 p.m.

The 2019 regular season begins Aug 30 at home against Wyoming at 6 p.m. in the 2019 Buffs Invitational. Colorado will also compete against Long Island University Brooklyn and UC Santa Barbara the following day at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectfully.

Colorado is set to repeat as competitors in the BIG TEN/Pac-12 Challenge, this season at the University of Iowa. In the first road match of the season the Buffaloes take on the Hawkeyes Sept. 6 at 6 p.m., then will compete against Illinois the following day.

CU will compete against in-state rival CSU in a new home-and-home set of matches this season. The Buffs will travel to Moby Arena Thursday, Sept. 12, to take on the Rams at 7 p.m. The two squads will then reconvene at the CU Events Center Friday night at 6 p.m.

The final weekend of the non-conference season will see CU host the Colorado Classic with Oakland, University of Maryland Baltimore Country (UMBC) and Campbell University. Colorado opens against Oakland at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, then see a double-header against UMBC at noon and Campbell at 7:30 p.m.

The Pac-12 Conference schedule opens with a tough week on the road for the Buffs against Utah on Sept. 25 at 7 p.m., then flying to Corvallis to take on Oregon State Friday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. Another road weekend against the Arizona schools go by before CU returns home to take on USC and UCLA on Friday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 13, at 2:30 p.m., respectfully.

The Buffs close out the final four matches of the first half of conference play with a trip to Stanford and Cal as well as a home set against the Washington squads Oct. 25 and Oct. 27. The homestand continues into the second half of the Pac-12 schedule with the Arizona schools coming to Boulder Nov. 1 and Nov. 3.

The final eight matches of the season begin with a long four-match road stretch to Los Angeles and the Washington schools. The Buffs play at UCLA Thursday, Nov. 7, and at USC Saturday, Nov. 9.

After the trip to the Washington schools the Buffaloes return home for the final four matches. Cal begins the homestand Friday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m., followed by the defending national champions in Stanford Sunday Nov. 24. Oregon rolls into Boulder the day before Thanksgiving, followed up with a senior match against Utah on Nov. 30. CU plays four matches in the final nine days of the season.

Season tickets and general admission 10-match flex plans are on sale now. For more information click here.

do not mind the home and home with CSU but it is weird to me that they are playing the two games on back to back days.

@ Iowa on Sept 6 then v Illinois on the 7th in the Pac 12/Big Ten Challenge. That looks to be tough.

Also, four road matches to start the conference shedule, but four at home to end it.

I plan to be at the two matches in Iowa City. Iowa has been through a difficult coaching change over the summer (NCAA violations). Don't know if that has affected their recruiting. Illinois is always tough. Always.

CU schedule shows the time for the Illinois match as TBD. Illini just released their schedule and it shows that match at 4 PM Central.

Iowa plays their first B1G football game at 11 AM that morning (Central time).

Illinois vs CU volleyball at 4 PM and Iowa vs Washington at 7 PM. That's the same times as the Friday matches, so that's probably correct.

Guessing if the football game is televised everything changes.

Quotes from the article that referenced the 2 Buffs-

"CNT Blue was led by Leah Clayton (OH, University of Colorado) and Melissa Evans (OPP, NC State), who each had eight points. Clayton had six kills on 10 swings, one block and one ace. She added 10 receptions with a 40 positive reception percent.... "

"CNT Blue libero Emma Smith (L, University of California) had 11 receptions in three sets with a 55 positive reception percent. Her libero teammate Rachel Whipple (L, University of Colorado) had 10 receptions and a 30 positive reception percent in two sets...."

In a team photo on twitter Deluzio looks to be on crutches. Hope it is not to serious. I tried to post but photo to large

According to the BDC, Deluzio is out for the year with a knee injury suffered while at home

CU volleyball begins practice, but loses Brynna DeLuzio to injury

DeLuzio will miss the season after recently undergoing knee surgery. DeLuzio will redshirt and retain three years of eligibility.

Brynna is a junior this season so how would she have three years of eligibility left after her redshirt this season?

she could petition the NCAA for an extra redshirt year since she was injured most of the year last year

she could petition the NCAA for an extra redshirt year since she was injured most of the year last year
Right but don't you have to wait until you have used up all 5 of your normal years to petition for that sixth year? Or have they changed the rules so she could have already petitioned for the sixth year?
