What does the next AD have to accomplish that Bohn didn't/couldn't?

Facilities? Improved football program? New sports? Better ticket office service? Better communication? Better fundraising? Attendance? Better media relations?

I think it basically comes down to improved football program and holding onto Tad if he continues to move our basketball team in the right direction.

Well, my guess is that some big money booster has called the shot. It has more to do with a big cigar's wishes more than anything else. A pure WAG on my part.

It's this. If football improves we can live with a lot of other crap. Football has to be better.

Bohn's successor needs to find a way to get DiStephano and Benson replaced. Much better odds for success that way..

At CU, the football program is the single most important part of the athletic department, and our football program has been a mess for just about as long as Bohn was in charge. Now, Bohn apologists will point out that it's not entirely or even at all his fault that the football program was down, and may be correct. But those are the breaks. The new AD will be measured by the perception of the football program moving forward, to include facility upgrades for the football team (keep in mind, there were bball facility upgrades under Bohn).

Bohn was getting old, maybe his knees couldn't take the stress from climbing under Benson's desk. The new AD needs to be limber.

Make the football team relevant on the field, get facilities up to BCS status, and continue to foster success in basketball.

Somehow get athletics an honorable mention in the university's "Flagship 2030" strategic planning process...

From an outsider looking in (I'm still in Raleigh, working on getting to Boulder), this is very encouraging me by what posters aren't mentioning. You aren't complaining about Folsom Field or Coors. You aren't complaining about the practice facilities or weight rooms or recruiting budgets. You aren't mentioning the number of games on TV (a moot point in this day and age) or ability to raise money for coaching salaries.

You are making the point quite well that an improvement in football is desired, and I can only imagine that angst that last season brought upon fans and alumni of a school with an AP football National Championship in their history.

Nice, if all that other stuff is in a good place, the future of CU athletics looks bright, football will get there. Good luck with the AD search.

Win 3 football games, juggle, kiss Benson's ass, keep Tad, suck up to the press, and be a public fool.

Produce winners in the high profile sports, and diversify like other Pac12 schools - wrestling, baseball, and track would be a nice place to start.

My list of priorities is as follows:

1. Make sure the lines of communication are open with Tad Boyle. Don't screw up the one good thing we have going.
2. Get the facilities upgrades funded and built ASAP.
3. enhance the football game day experience. Stop messing with tailgaters. No more damn bike racks in tailgating spots. That stuff doesn't happen at Alabama, Michigan, Texas, etc. the fact that it happened here and nobody seemed to care is very telling.
4. Start figuring out what the next project will be after this one. Realize that there will ALWAYS be a new project that needs to be worked on.
5. Meet with the major donors. Make sure they're comfortable with your vision for the AD.

Recruiting budget rivals anyone except Tennessee. Folsom and Coors are great places to go to games, but the arms race is what it is. They need to be taken to the next level. Not like NFL or NBA stadiums, but with the amenities that make it more fan friendly for casual fans and more enticing to bring a business client. Practice facility for basketball is outstanding. For football, it's a newer bubble but really should be a permanent indoor space to improve training and recruiting. Weight room and locker rooms are both fairly nice with recent renovations, but need to be expanded and continually improved (we're in a conference with Nike University at Eugene, after all).

Just my simple minded opinion. First and foremost, this is not just about football although football is the center piece of any long term success.

  • Build relationships with big donors and corporations
  • Talk to and listen to the entire donating base of fans
  • Lay out a true vision for the AD and the roadmap to achieving it - What does success look like. This is what the AD is selling, give a reason for donors of all levels to buy in and believe
  • Create a culture of expected success within the AD and start to deliver on it
  • Market the hell out of the vision, strategy, and milestones
  • Be more transparent and inclusive
  • Engage the alumni, donors and welcome their involvement
  • Introduce interactive ways for the donors and fans to become involved and engaged in the CU AD
  • Football has to be a priority and must be fixed in order to pay for future expansion. Make it a priority
  • Lay out a long term plan to get on parity with the rest of the Pac 12 in terms of non revenue and olympic sports

Again, just one opinion but the process is not complex. You need a person who can develop and sell a vision. A communicator. A person who can maintain/build the necessary infrastructure and team that delivers on the day to day operations. A person who can fundraise in a lights out manner.

In short, we need an AD with the Midas touch. It's all about the $$$$$. If you can raise money as the CU AD, pretty much anything is possible with everything else this place has going for it.

For those who feel that fundraising abilities is the most important aspect of the job...what about the idea of incentive based compensation based on the the amount of money raised for the facilities project...something along the lines of a bonus equal to 1-2% of the money raised for the project. Raise $170 million, get a $1.7 - $3.5 million dollar bonus.

I'm always in favor of having tangible incentives built into contracts. Bohn's contract had them and the new AD's will too. I also agree that with a major goal of the next AD being facilities, that should be there along with the standard stuff regarding APR performance, graduation rate, Director's Cup standing, etc.
