When you lose guys good enough to play, but not good enough to win -- Is this good or bad attrition?

I'm ready for a bit of a youth movement.

Not to play young guys just because they're young. But if there's upside that the vet doesn't have and that vet isn't creating matchup advantages, go with the young guy.

And once they've been passed, those vets will need to make a decision on whether to accept a new role and stay or leave.

Depends on their replacements. I’d argue taking a D performer and turning that into a C is better when you don’t have a viable replacement.

At a place like Colorado, resources/recruits are limited. We don’t get As or even Bs. You have to be pragmatic.

Good attrition happens after the season when you have guys coming in to replace them, bad attrition happens during the season.

I'd say depends on how much play we're talking about. A guy like Maddox is a bummer in the short term. A guy like Jones, who technically plays lol, is not.

Straight up losing starters probably isn't good, especially when we desperately need to achieve the elusive trashcan bowl game. Attrition would be better before or after the season, not in the middle of clawing for a bowl game.

Attrition is attrition. Just replace it with someone who can play, I guess we’ll see if we can do that. Tucker is going to have to be a hell of a salesman.

Depends on their seniority and their relative value. Also the attitude.

But guys, this is to be expected. See ASU, free 247 article on how young they are, and how many open scholarships are now available.

The Sun Devils’ roster attrition has mostly impacted the players Edwards inherited, leaving the Sun Devils very young in addition to being quite thin in spots.

ASU’s depth consists almost entirely of freshmen and sophomores while juniors and seniors make up just 36 percent of the scholarship roster. Edwards, who fielded the youngest starting defense in FBS in 2018 and is starting three true freshmen on offense in 2019 including rising star quarterback Jayden Daniels, knows that'll change, in time.

They are simply a year ahead of us. And they also had mid-year attrition as the transfer rules sort of push that to happen with these 4 game redshirt situations.

The in season transfer portal entry is a direct result of the 4 games played and can still red shirt rule. In season shifts like this will continue across all programs. Not a good or bad thing just a new thing. It hurts a team like the Buffs this year due to injuries and not being deep in certain spots.

in season declarations or entering the portal is the new normal. Just need to adjust our expectations

i am confident that if we were sitting with wins over air force and ua right now, we'd be seeing a different approach. a bowl game is a pipe dream now (although that could be revisited if the Buffs shock the world and beat usc). so, yeah, play the guys that do what you ask them to do, regardless of their seniority or experience. you don't pull montez at the point they pulled him if they thought there was still a chance at a bowl. that was the white flag.

but, the situation can still change in our favor! suppose montez comes out and leads an upset of the ****ing trojans.... that would be a season-changer.

Only if he doesn't sh!t the bed against ucla and/or Furd.

yes, but the point is that if it happens and we are still in the hunt for a bowl, then you might overlook some of it in order to bowl. it is week to week. i believe the cost-benefit analysis is pretty straight forward: if tracking to bowl, then lower the bar. if not, then go zero tolerance.

If memory serves me correct, the last time a player left and made a significant impact somewhere else was Brian Calhoun. Although Alex Lewis could be an example as well but he was suspended I believe...
Guess what I am trying to say is I believe we'll be okay with the current attrition.

What it is is bad recruiting. I haven't seen anything that shows me that MT is a better recruiter than MM.

Would you have granted Maddox a red shirt?

I can see a future log jam within the portal. Kids will be in there and not get picked up. Some of these knee jerk decisions by 18yo kids will taper off slightly.

I'm not crying too hard about the attrition. Yes, we lost too much in the secondary, but a culture has to be established. If Hypolite wasn't on board, sucked to see him leave, but peace out. I actually wasn't a Maddox fan like a lot of posters, but again, if the rumor posted on here is true - gtfo. Callier - I am a little disappointed in him, because I thought he could develop, but whatever. Jones...what did he ever do for us except be a practice body?

Thanks to guys for playing for us, but onward we go - I'm not too sad at all...

Bad. How can it be better to cut your better players, guys who have gutted it out with their teammates? Leads to worse play by definition. This obviousy doesn't apply to guys who have quit on the team.

Who are you talking about? What players?

Are there any stats out there that show the attrition/transfers of all D1 teams? I would like to see what it looks like at other programs vs CU. My fear is with a losing record this year, we are only able to replace players who leave with similarly skilled players.

Depends on the player leaving and the player replacing, largely impossible to answer.

Half of the equation can be addressed. Antwine, Maddox, bad. Every body else, well, not so bad.

If similarly skilled, but the right cultural and scheme fit, that’s a step up.

There's been a lot of focus on the transfer portal and how this 4-game redshirt rule is impacting CU.

I do think that we have seen the past 2 weeks an undercurrent of locker room discord. We've had a handful of players focused on selfish priorities (rightly or wrongly) instead of team goals as they decide whether it is in their best interest to redshirt & transfer or to remain with the Buffs. Reading the tea leaves, I think that MT/RG/LC also expressed some annoyance that some players were trying to avoid playing in a 5th game even though the team had a role for them to play and the coaches wanted them on the field.

But this stuff is impacting everyone, not just CU. I think that the new approach for just about every team will need to be that if a guy isn't playing starter level snaps then his snaps need to be managed so that he only plays in 4 games and redshirts. That should be done with every 1st year player as a policy.

Last, I'm kind of excited from the other direction to see what type of talent CU is able to bring in through the transfer portal. This definitely works both ways.
