Not great final results in the 1st tournament of the season (albeit against generally top flight competition), but golf is thankfully a sport where teams move down AND UP the leaderboard between tournaments a LOT, and good to see that 3 of their players finished the tournament off with their strongest rounds.

Learn from it and come back strong Buffs!

PALOS VERDES, Calif. — Despite shooting its best round of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge on Tuesday, the University of Colorado women's golf team was unable to make up any ground and finished 16th.

The Buffs shot a 17-over 301 on Tuesday, bettering their scorecards from the previous two days. CU was a 24-over 308 on Sunday and a 25-over 309 on Monday to finish a 65-over 917. They finished four strokes behind Alabama, which was 15th at 61-over (913), although the Buffs did have a better third round score than the UA, which shot 21-over (305).

Stanford hung on for the win with a three-day scorecard of 295-279-293—867, which was 15-over for the tournament. Pac-12 foe UCLA was just two-strokes back at 869 (291-289-289) and Southern California finished third (299-288-284—871).

"We got a bit better play today from Malak (Boureada), Kirsty (Hodgkins) and Elle (Otten)," head coach Anne Kelly said. "Unfortunately our seniors struggled with this golf course. It is a Championship course that requires precise shots around the greens. We just have not had the preparation time outdoors to tune up that part of game yet.

"We definitely take away a sense of what areas we need to work on and at least have a good idea of what to expect for the Pac-12 Championship back here in April. This is a tough way to start the spring season, but our players will fight back and work hard to prepare for the next tournaments."

The Buffs will be back in competition, Feb. 18-19, at the Rebel/Beach Invitational at the Spanish Trail Country Club in Las Vegas.

Also, best wishes to #ForeverBuff Robyn Choi as she gets to begin her LPGA pro career this weekend in her home country.

Must be a thrill for her to get to play a practice round with THE legendary golfer from her home country. (Ms. Webb has 41 career LPGA victories including 7 majors. Both she and Ms. Choi also hail from the same state (Quennsland).)

Info on the women's golf team's next tournament, starting tomorrow in Vegas. (Hope the weather doesn't cause too much havoc; doesn't sound great.)

BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's golf team is heading to Las Vegas to compete at the Rebel/Beach Invitational. The tournament will take place over two days, Feb. 18-19, with 36 holes on the first day and 18 on the second.

UNLV and Long Beach State are cohosts for the tournament, which will be played at the 6,355-yard, par 72 Spanish Trails Country Club. The field consists of 16 teams, which includes a pair of Pac-12 foes, Arizona and Oregon. The other teams are: BYU, Charlotte, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada-Reno, New Mexico, Northern Arizona, UC-Irvine, Virginia, New Mexico State and San Jose State.

"The last event was a championship field," head coach Anne Kelly said. "This one has some good teams. It will be great competition, but what we have to do is take care of our own games and make sure our team is doing the best that we can. We can't control anyone else or the outcomes. We have to take care of our business and do better than we did last time."

Play will begin on both days with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. PT/9 a.m. MT. Live scoring will be available at www.birdiefire.com.

While everyone on the team is looking to do better, the one thing that can't be controlled is the weather, both in Boulder and in Las Vegas.

"We haven't been able to practice outside, so that is tough," Kelly said. "We should be a little more prepared [for this tournament] because we have played, but it has been a tough winter. Their forecast is not great out there. They are calling for snow on Sunday. We are just taking it a day at a time and doing the best we can."

Fair finish*** for the team in Vegas. Probably the highlight is it's always awesome (in any sport) when a freshman shows potential to be a top player- congrats to Ms. Bouraeda for the runner-up finish!
(*** Trying to evaluate tournaments, I usually look at how they did relative to the other teams in the ratings (http://golfstat.com/index.cfm?event=public.teamRanking. As I type this, the Buffs are rated #47 in golfstats (although I assume the goal is raising significantly from that #); they didn't finish ahead of any teams ranked ahead of them, but also only finished behind one who was rated behind them (host UNLV (#89)).)

From the below, they have almost a month before they're next tournament- hope they get some good work in.

LAS VEGAS — The University of Colorado women's golf team recorded a sixth place finish at the Rebel/Beach Invitational on Tuesday afternoon and freshman Malak Bouraeda led the team with a runner-up finish.

Arizona took home the tournament crown. The Wildcats finished with a 14-over 878. They shot rounds of 291-294-293 during the two-day tournament. Only four strokes back was UNLV, which finished the tournament at 18-over (290-295-297—882). Virginia took third overall (296-299-297—892), Oregon was fourth (301-300-294—895) and San Jose State was fifth (290-297-311—898).

Colorado was in fifth through two rounds, but did not have enough to hang on during the third round at the 6,353-yard, par 72 Spanish Trail Country Club. The Buffs finished the tournament with a 37-over 901 with rounds of 299-303-299.

"Not quite the results we hoped for, but we're so excited for Malak and her second-place finish," head coach Anne Kelly said. "She played very smart, solid golf. All her hard work is starting to pay off. Kirsty (Hodgkins) had a rough event and didn't play at all up to her capabilities, but that happens to all golfers; sometimes it's just not your week. We saw good signs from Elle (Otten) and she keeps progressing. We have a bit of a break [before the next tournament] and are hoping for good weather to get in some good solid practice time."

The Buffs are back in action, March 15-16, at the Casa de Campo Invitational in the Dominican Republic.

Team couldn't move up much after a bad 1st round (they were in last by 8 strokes at that point) against a generally tough field, but good the team played better as the tournament went on. Hope they keep on grinding before heading to wine country (Napa) next week and kicking A in a tournament I believe they co-host.
