Oregon and Oregon State have figured out how to recruit out-of-state (in particular Texas,) why can't we?!?!
I can see why they can pull from Cali the way they do because they can sell that they're friends and family will be able to watch them on TV during the Pac-10 schedule.
Same theory should apply to us with Texas kids, but yet....arrrgggghhh...
The answer to your question is simple: Mack Brown.
He could sell sand in the desert. Before him we were losing everyone.
That's a good point. I think bottom line CU needs a coach that can recruit in TX, to get in line in the peckign order. Instead of guys going to Texas Tech, A&M, TCU, Baylor they need to go to CU. CU needs to cut in line. I think Hawk, being from CA and coaching in ID leans heavily towards CA to the detriment of TX recruiting.Roger that, I can accept the fact that we'll lose the majority of Texas 5* and 4* to Mack (and the rest of the TX programs) but I was talking about the theory presented by the article that UO and OSU are taking the underrated guys that the local programs don't even take a sniff at.
Consider LaMichael James for UO. When asked how he ended up at UO from Houston, he said he just wanted out of Texas. Where was CU in recruiting him???? And considering that we have done well with 2-3* guys like Chap, Jalil, and Jimmy Smith seems to me there's fruit to be had here in Texas, yet we're not getting it!
Texas-gets their choice
Oklahoma-recruits the H#ll out of the state
Okie State-Same
A&M-finds ways to keep people at home
Tech-fun offense.....if your an athlete where do you go?
Baylor-improving/better than CU at the moment. The "home" factor
TCU-again....what can we do besides claim we are Big 12 and if they want that look at the teams above.
Houston- if I am a WR I would take a strong look at playing in that offense or would I rather have Cody slinging me the ball?
i guess my point is that it is so much harder to get kids out of Texas than it used to be....
Neuweasel really screwed us in this area IMO. The minute he came in, he cleared house of all the guys who knew Texas and almost solely focused on SoCal. Not that there aren't great guys out of Cali, but they definitely have a different attitude than the kids coming out of Texas I think.
So we end up losing all the contacts we had in Texas, GB started to re-establish them and almost got them back to where they were before (I think) while Kansas, Missouri, Neb, Okie Lite and those of that ilk started to move in.
Then Hawk comes in, contacts go away (again!) and now the other programs have firm in roads down here and we're re-establishing AGAIN!
Madness, I tell you, MADNESS!![]()
That's not true. Neuheisel recruited Texas like crazy. Andre Gurode. Cedric Cormier. Miles Koon. Three of the top players in Texas signed with Colorado in 1997.
LSU will attract a good chunk of the top tier talent from TX as well. They are close enough to home, especially for the Houston area kids.
Oddly enough Miami (FL) is really great at consistently picking top athletes out of TX.
Add Missouri to that list. They have been getting better and better at establishing a pipeline into Texas and have replaced the "second tier" that we used to hold onto.
Pelini has Nebraska focused more on Texas than the school has done in a while as well.
Arkansas pulls 7-10 3* and 4* guys in from Texas, a few of which every year are from the state's top 100, on an annual basis as well. That being said, there is still plenty of talent to go around, and CU should hopefully be able to get into Texas and pull a couple of guys out of there every year.
