Wyoming Game Week Thread - Saturday at some ungodly time

I said something similar the last couple weeks. This defense is totally different if we would have been able to keep a hold of Hill-Green and Colton Hood.

Those two and a healthy Sammy Sacks and we are a LOT better.

I think this defense can still get a lot better with some consistency on the DL, Sammy healthy, and figuring out our safety situation somehow.
Yep! This team lacks starters right now on defense.

Salter:

304 yards on 64% for 3 TDs/0 INTs
86 yards on 11 carries for 1 TD

For the first time this season, the offense was called with a game plan that allows KSalt to be great. Miraculously, the offense played very well.

We may need to borrow a page from the Mormon Playbook, and pray we can beat BYU.
They dominated us as much as anyone did last year and they return lots of starters. including I think, their entire
OL. And it felt like they had a real attitude.
On the other hand, most of our starters weren't here last year, so they won't have personal bad memories.

Someway, somehow, both the O and D coaches have to come up with creative, inventive game plans that work.
Also, this game is at home and not a Bowl game where our team was out partying beforehand.
Hopefully Prime can use that loss to help motivate for this one.

Just got home and had a chance to go through this thread. Didn't look in last night, late game and my data in the stadium sucked.

A few things. The new Ralphie is great, runs with more energy and enthusiasm that the last one ever did. First run went past midfield, second run she went all the way around the Buff logo getting to the 37 or 38 yard line (the far, not the near like the last one.)

Shouldn't read too much into the result. Wyoming is an average at best MWC team that we should beat up. Good to have them on the schedule right now though.

Hate to have lost to Houston but the week off looks to have done the job getting Salter back to playing the way he should instead of how he was trying to. When he is a threat to run the ball it forces the defense to account for him and creates gaps that he can throw into.

Final score should not have been as close as it was. CU needs to learn to finish. The 3rd quarter TD was due to blown assignments. The 4th quarter TD they let Wyoming drive the field including converting two 3rd downs for 1st and another 3rd for the TD. They had opportunities to get off the field and didn't.

Same on offense, should have dominated but didn't.

A couple people in the thread said that CU outcoached Wyoming, nope, just won based on far better talent.

Also somebody posted that the altitude was getting to Wyoming. Laramie is at about 7200 feet

Students were great. Stayed well into the 3rd but emptied by the 4th. Parents weekend is always interesting and the late game changed the dynamic. Saw some parents with their kids reliving their college days. A couple of different parents above me were drunk enough that I worried about them hurting themselves getting up and down. Also the woman who stopped at the allbuffs tailgate and sucked down half a bottle of Hornitos straight from the bottle, she was less than stable walking away.

More importantly, how was the parking pass?

That’s a coach trust/decision issue. Nothing to do with Mata. If they felt Buch was solid enough from range, they would send him in.
Or, OTOH, if Buchanan hits a 55 yarder everyone will clamor for a change and Prime is loyal to Mata for some reason. I assume because he was Prime’s guy from Jackson State.

Oh, and Buchanan put a kickoff through the uprights. Of course there’s a big difference between kickoffs and field goals. But….

Big 12 is such a week to week league with no real dominant team. Maybe TTU is that team this year, but if CU gets the Salter from last night, I think they can beat anyone on their schedule. Likewise, if the defense doesn’t fix some of the lapses that lead to their chunk plays, they can lose to anyone.
I'm not near as worried about Salter as I am the defense.

hopefully we start to see guys elevating their game. if salter can stay consistent, we will be in a lot of games. our WRs are elite.

biggest worry on offense is whether the line can hold long enough to give salter time to stay settled in.
Mixing in healthy doses of rpo wouldn't hurt in that regard, but damnit he's gotta read it.

Last year, Travis and Colton Hood would lock up the WR at the line of scrimmage. They were able to recover quickly if the WR had them by a step. Obviously, CP has no trust with the DB'S that are here. They are playing off the line of scrimmage by 10+ yards, giving up 7+ yards on quick pass plays without pressure. Either they trust the DB'S to rub the WR's at the line of scrimmage or go zone.
This would be a much better defense if we went Zone. Much better.

I’m not saying Wyoming is all that good, but their defense is not bad at all. Kept Dampier and Utah in check most of the game, while Salter and the offense mostly had their way all night. Salter accounted for nearly 400 yards and 4 TDs and finally looked like the guy from 2023 Liberty.

But, yes, he needs to prove he can be that same guy against BYU
I'm not sure anybody was kept in check in that UU/Wyo game. Wyoming MIGHT win 6 games in a REALLY sh!tty conference.

Last week, the narrative was that Utah is the class of the Big 12 and now this week they suck. This entire line of discussion plays exactly into what I said about this being a week to week conference.
Utah is Top 4 in the conference this year. Wyoming is much different team playing in Laramie than on the road. We are still a complete anomaly.

Beat BYU and we've got something. Lose and I don't think we make a bowl.

Mata has a kick blocked then what 3 or 4 blocked in the nfl...crazy

Thank goodness it wasn't returned like Sunday

Say it with me. Week. To. Week. Conference.

Lose to BYU and they can easily beat TCU and ISU the following two weeks. Beat BYU and they can easily lose to TCU and ISU.

Honestly, when the opposing QB isn't a major run threat, I'm actually not overly concerned about the defense. Take out the 50 yard gasher to Wyoming's RB in the second half and they had 115 yards rushing on 40 carries (2.8 ypc). As I said the other day, they have to get better at not allowing those chunk plays, but their run defense against RBs the past 3 games has mostly been pretty good. Hell, even if you include the 50 yard run it was 165 yards on 41 carries for 4 ypc, which in college football, isn't terrible.

How do you trust this secondary against good to elite QB? Just so you know, becht, josh hoover and sam leavitt are all NFL caliber QB. I would be shocked if we are within 1 score when we play against their teams.

Heck, we are even one TD underdog against BYU, who is starting a freshman QB, at home. This is a depressing season.

I can't wait to play Sawyer Robertson in the Big 12 Championship then!

what teams do they qb for?

Has anybody found a place to watch the CU-WY game on demand? For some reason, Hulu didn't record it despite being a national ESPN telecast and the fact I have it set up that they should record all CU games.

Pretty frustrated right now. I didn't see much of the game as I was in Flagstaff for Parents Weekend.

Do you have Fubo?

Salter is just so much better than Staub, talent wise. His shiftiness alone can cover tons of issues from the OL.

You just have to design a system that is tailored to him, and we failed to do so in the whole offseason.

If you really want to know what's the issue we have now, it's bad coaching. Including HC, OC/DC and position coaches.
Here’s what I’m going with.

Oklahoma’s 2021 season (the year of the Rattler–Williams controversy)
  • Record: The Sooners finished 11–2 overall.
