2019 PAC 12 Football News

If this schedule is so brutal, what does that make next season's schedule?
This schedule isn’t brutal. It seems like a fairly standard non-SEC/ACC schedule to me. Two mediocre to bad G5 programs and a P5 program that won 4 games last year, all of which are in Colorado. Sure, we replace OSU and Cal with Stanford and Oregon, but are we sure Stanford and Cal aren’t more of a wash than we want to admit this year?

Stanford will be slightly better-maybe 7-5 to Cal's 6-6? That's a winnable game. Next year's OOC is going to be the hardest we've had in a number of years-CSU will be garbage, but Fresno is one of the better G5 programs in the country, and Texas A&M would paste the Nubs if you put the two of them on a neutral field right now.

didn't they move Fink to WR like a year ago?

damn USC is a mess, I had to look that Slovis kid up. They took an out of state QB who had MWC at best offers and he's #2 as a true freshman? Yikes.

JT Daniels better show something this year or Bryce Young will roll in deep next year

All that prediction needs is for Swann to hire Harrell as the full time head coach.

Colorado: I see a lot of people out here counting games vs. Colorado as victories. I was guilty of it too. The Buffs are low-hanging fruit when you're trying to figure out a path to meet or exceed expectations for anyone that has Colorado on its schedule. But the doubt is misguided when you dig a little bit. Colorado has maybe the best player in the Pac-12 in Laviska Shenault and it was 5-0 before Shenault's injury last fall. It also has an upper tier quarterback in Steven Montez, plenty of running mates on offense like KD Dixon at wide receiver and true freshman Jaren Mangam at running back. The defense will stabilize, the offense will be explosive and Colorado will overachieve and blow past the three or four wins that most are projecting. -- Barton Simmons

The analytics community is very bearish on us. I understand some of those reasons. I do think that the underestimation can be great motivation if the players can get some affirmation that the process Coach Tucker is implementing works for them.

Analytics will change when models get populated with real data. I hope.
Yep. The numbers can only reflect what the team was in 2018 at this point. I don't think that tells the story of what these players are capable of. It's going to be a long season if what we saw the last half of the year is predictive of what we'll see in 2019.

I know CU fell apart last year and with our recent history CU doesn't get any love from anybody, so I understand why people around the country have such low expectations. What I don't get is the low expectations so many have on Allbuffs. Yes we have a difficult schedule, but in 2016 we had a pretty tough schedule also (at least going by preseason rankings), winning 3 out of 4 games against teams that were ranked in the preseason ratings. I am not saying we will win 10 games, but someone who closely follows CU football thinking we will only win 3 or 4 games doesn't make logical sense to me.

I can understand why someone would say that @Oregon, Washington and @Utah were very low chance games with CSU and AFA being the only games that would be penciled in as likely wins. That leaves another 7 games as somewhere around the 40-60% range for a win. I don't understand an expectation that we'd only get 1 or 2 of those toss-up type games. More normal would be to get 3 or 4 of them, so I'd think that the "no hype prediction" should have people guessing that this is a 5 or 6 win team.

I heart Chip Kelly.
It's bizarre to me that he felt a need to blow UCLA up and go with a total youth movement last year. Mora wasn't winning enough and there were likely some culture problems, but that cupboard was not bare by any stretch. Bruins were putting a lot of guys in the NFL, just underperforming -- which is kind of their program DNA. UCLA is the Pac-12's Texas A&M.

they did come on a little.....but, my feeling last year was Chip was kind of protecting himself/inflated ego a little when he saw they weren't very good as a team. the "mastermind rebuild" theory as a PR move.....but, who knows?

as for UCLA, as a kid/teenager imbibing all the college football i could..... i never got why Terry Donohue was talked about like an elite coach. still, to this day. a very good coach, yeah sure....ok. but not top tier of his era (and there WERE some good ones).....TD awesome at winning 9 games.

i can see the ATM comparison. probably not as corrupt or hypocritical as the Ags though. probably. ha.

edit: i guess where i'm going with it.....i've always thought UCLA was either overrated or underachieving. some combo thereof. hiring Karl Dorrell and Rick back to back was also both bizarre and a terrible move.

Meh. Wilner's a homer. Not the typical homer who thinks the hometown (NorCal) teams are great, but the kind of homer who knows much more about the hometown teams than any other team. Where he really laid an egg, in my opinion, is by saying that the program is trending down and supporting his hot take with this bit of foolishness: "But the Hotline thought Mike MacIntyre was the right man to elevate the program on a multi-year basis, and it looked that way right up until it didn’t. It’s a tough gig. A tough, tough gig."

Wilner thought MM was the right man because he watched him get 11 wins in San Jose and figured he was the second coming of Bob Stoops or something. Guess what, Jon? Hawk won 13 games in Boise and I'd rather have Burrito coach the team than him. Many, maybe most, on this board saw MM for who he was--a decent guy, a decent coach, but not the man who was going to put this team in the championship hunt year after year. I have little doubt that the program is trending up with RG in charge and expect Tucker to take us further than MM ever could.
All I got out of that was the vision of Head Coach Burrito standing in front of the media post practice saying “This was our best Tuesday leg humping ever!”
