Future at QB?

Grad Transfer seems so stupid for long term success?
I think that Lytle, Stenstrom, and Lewis are excellent options for Tucker!
They seem like they can all handle this offense if given a chance. Long term we want Lewis to win the job, but I would really like to see the other two get on the field!
What makes you believe that Lytle or Stenstrom can handle this offense if given a chance? Was it all those games they’ve played in the last few years that gives you confidence?

depends on if the mod likes the posters involved or not. If so, it’s relevant. If not, it’ll be moved...you’ll find out soon enough.
Wait, does this mean I’m liked? If so, I really ****ed up somewhere along the way.

It’s called blind faith and you need some!!

I hear your point, but couldn't one counter that the lack of exposure to Lytle/Stenstrom makes it presumptuous to right them off? I get some of the skepticism on Lytle because he's had more time to make a push. Stenstrom is young and the feedback on him this spring seemed surprisingly positive. With almost zero playing time and closed practices, how much do we really know, good or bad?

Better to kick the tires on the 2 they've got. Don't want another davis webb situation, or end up with a jordan webb.

We've been shown that Montez can't or simply won't make the reads, so why not try one of the others?

Start playing for next year.

Not sure what the point of having Lytle & Stenstrom is if they don’t get a start when the 5th year senior starting QB graduates.

Heck freshman QBs start and perform well all the time. They’ve been around for a few years now, why wouldn’t one of em be the presumptive starter next year?

Because it's not the NFL, where sucking can benefit the program. The staff is trying to make a bowl game, and Montez gives them the best chance at it.
You know this for certain?
We've NEVER seen either of them when they prepared to play and knew they were going in. When they actually, you know, got to run the offense.

If the Buffs fall out of bowl contention there is no reason to continue to play Montez. See what Lytle or Stenstrom can do before you have to commit to one of them. If neither looks good go hunting for a transfer if one does continue to let him play to gain experience.

Montez has been the definition of inconsistent throughout his entire career here and for two straight years as a starter led the program to a 10-14 record and no bowl game. Has Lytle ever been close to pushing Montez for the starting job? Stenstrom supposedly had a promising Spring, but remained QB3 into this season. I'm just not sure either are really all that good.

I'm basing it off the idea that the last two coaching staffs saw all three of them in practice and the competition has never really been in doubt. And no, I don't believe Lytle or Stenstrom have some kind of magical "gamer" switch that would elevate their play in a game if only given a chance.

Yeah, I usually assume the people in charge know more than I do, and they’ve got their reasons. But I think just the fact that Monty gets all the starts doesn’t necessarily say anything about them...we’ve been desperate for wins during his tenure and I think it would seem like a foolhardy coaching move (or at least not playing it safe) to bench him unless he gets injured based on the fact that they’ve been grooming him, hes got experience, and teases potential with those flashes of greatness.

I’m just hoping that’s the reason, rather than the backups are disappointing.

IMO Montez benefited from two factors:
1) macintyre hated playing less experienced players over more experienced players. Even if one of the backups had the potential to be better than Montez, they weren’t going to get the opportunity to demonstrate that in games or with the 1s in practices from macintyre.
2) Tucker inherited a very experienced fifth year QB. Tucker does not want to lose at all, so he’s going with the QB who has gotten the most reps.

In the upcoming offseason, Lytle and Stenstrom will each get their shot. They will be in competition with Lewis, which they’ll be favored to win given their familiarity with the system and the program. One of Lytle or Stenstrom are unlikely to be on the team next year since the non starter will want to find a place to play. Getting better in the ground game will be essential.

I agree that if the Buffs are out of bowl contention, it's time to move on from Montez for the benefit of both parties and see what the other QBs can do. I'm sure CU fans will be watching the QB transfer market as well especially for a dual threat QB.

It's nice to have a good ground game going into next season with a new QB. It's nice that we have had stability at QB for awhile with Liufau and then Montez but it's time for the team to start winning games and going to bowl games.

To move on from this conversation, I agree with your post. For future years, the good ground game will be key. Also, we have to remember, this team is still pretty young needing more depth and talent at certain positions.

The defense is a new install and that generally takes 1 season alone (this year sort of reminds me of GB's 1st or 2nd year). By year 3, Sean Tufts was sacking Crouch on the 1st series, and perfectly dropping into coverage v. UT to pick off Chris Simms.

I am not giving up on this season, since the PAC12 is so bizarre. At years end, it will be for the staff to evaluate all the QBs and recruit where they see need or a fit.
