'20 AZ WDE Jason Harris (SIGNED to COLORADO)

Sometimes you suck the joy out of everything.

I am just trying to say if you are going to play Harris as a soft redshirt (which seems reasonable), Wazzu is not a game to get his feet wet. If anything, games like Oregon, Washington, and Utah make a lot more sense.

Idk common sense would say having more good pass rushers vs a pass centric team is the right move. It’s a lot easier to get inside pressure if they are being forced to kick help to the outside

You guys act like his lack of physical maturity will not be a detriment in obvious passing situations. He has a great first step, but he does not have the pure speed to run around a college tackle. He needs to have the size and strength to work the edge of the tackle if he is going to not redshirt next year. I think he needs to get up to 250+ with his frame if he's going to play in more than 4 games next year.

You're no fun.

Good logic for a team that has talent. Not CU.

Likewise. We will have more pass rushers next year. If Harris is playing at 230 or under, his effectiveness as a pass rusher will be zilch IMO (this was also displayed in the UA game the other day). So what does that achieve other than potentially get into his head? This kid needs to be developed. Be patient with him, he will be a monster once he fills out.

If Harris weighed 240+ right now, I think he would have been a top 50 recruit in the 5* range. The fact he needs to develop is a blessing — odds are that CU wouldn’t have had the opportunity to sign him if he was coming in ready to be a high usage guy at this level as a freshman. There’s no ceiling here, though.

I agree, his ceiling is Gianormous...but, we are so bereft of speed and length off the edge that I see him playing in more than 4 games next year.

I agree with the concern over his physical maturity, at his height and current weight he is going to get pushed around, even by running backs and tight ends. If, and that is a question not a prediction, he can get up to 230-235 by the start of the season he could be an effective outside edge rusher against certain teams.

Washington State and the Leach offense is probably not one of those teams. They do throw the ball a lot but that doesn't make them vulnerable to outside rushers.

To start with against that offense the outside rusher has to come further because the line splits widen the formation substantially, they recruit and train their tackles to effectively control the edge using that space, they also almost always have a man, back or WR moving out to that edge who can pick up or help if the outside rusher comes free. As mentioned before this man can also simply go to the space vacated by the outside rusher and be in position for an open reception and YAC.

Biggest thing is that the Leach offense relies on the QB getting rid of the ball quickly, unless an outside rusher get a free run he likely isn't getting to the QB before the QB has either passed the ball or vacated the pocket.

Harris is a unique guy since he is tall for an outside linebacker/ edge rusher but I don't know that he ever will be a hand in the dirt 5 technique defensive lineman. Yes the game was entirely different on both sides of the ball then but I can very easily see Harris becoming a modern day version of Alfred Williams. A guy who is bigger and taller than most OLBs but still quick enough to make the plays on the edge. Al mostly played a stand-up technique at CU and was a disruptive miss match against most teams.

Does anyone know if young Mr. Harris will be an early enrollee since he already signed his LOI during that cycle?

I’m going to give my opinion that is uneducated and doesn’t mean a damn thing. I believe that if Tucker thinks he can win without Harris, he will preserve his eligibility. If Tucker believe he needs Harris to win games, he’ll play. Do we really have the luxury to RS him? Probably. I think it’s more likely he RS’s and plays 4 games.

Of course no one will really have any idea where Harris is on the ready scale before fall camp, but my uneducated speculation is he plays against CSU (bc they are terrible and we will be up and they will pass a lot, so it will be a chance for him to just focus on one thing), the AZ (bc I think they are terrible too, also think we will be ahead and it gives him a few weeks to improve in practice) then I think he will play against UCLA (also think they are borderline terrible, and that will be the game that shows whether, after another few weeks of work in practice, he is ready to be a contributor for the rest of the season or held back as injury insurance/redshirt).

To further speculate, I expect him to show improvement each week and be a contributor in the back half of the season. He seems sharp, I expect he will learn fast how he can be most effective, and that he will put in the work in the spring, summer and fall to add the needed weight to get on the field.

Not sure I would waste a potential redshirt game on CSU.

It will be interesting to see where Harris comes in at for weight. I think the most we can hope is probably 10 plays a game. He’s not staying 4-5 years, if he develops.

Maybe he bulks up a couple notches in Spring / Summer and comes on in the 2nd half of the season. I could see that happening more easily than playing a lot right away.
