I'm fairly agnostic on Leach, neither embracing or rejecting his weirdness...he is what he is. I am skeptical he can win in the SEC with his offense and recruiting history.

I think the offense can work with some tweaks, but I am really skeptical about him recruiting. He has never shown much inclination in that area and he is stepping into toughest division in college football.

Am I the only one that thinks McElwain is a good coach and would likely do very well at Wazzu? I thought he had CSU on a path back to the top tier of the Mountain West before he left for FL. He isn’t made for a big program (too much of a doofus), but I think he’d be an excellent hire at Wazzu.
Wasn't Ramfan bitching about how Sparkles leveraged the previous staff's recruiting, and left them with a bare cupboard? Can't recall if that was actually true, certainly average rammie football wisdom isn't that high.

I don't remember the specifics, because I frankly don't care about them. I do generally remember having the feeling that he did a pretty good job of turning their roster over in his first couple of years on the job.

I think the offense can work against middle level SEC teams. The problem will come when they are trying to run it against teams that have NFL level talent at DB and pass rushers who get to the QB faster than he can make a play.

You both identify the biggest issue though with recruiting. Leach's teams have never been great against teams that can run the ball efficiently. He doesn't recruit the kind of DL talent needed to stand up to the top OLs in the SEC.

HIs offense makes it worse because they aren't equipped to effectively simulate those offenses and prepare for them. The top SEC teams may only throw the ball against them to avoid boredom.

For a SelachimorphaPhilliac he is a good coach and could do very well. I would rather he not go there.

Were there rumors before this morning? I just saw this a few minutes ago and was kind of shocked actually.
I don't believe anyone really had any idea this was coming. I saw nothing on twitter and the cover 3 podcast guys, who are pretty dialed in, never mentioned him at all even as recently as Monday.

Wonder if Wazzu would target Joe Salave'a.
That's the sort of chance I think they should take. Joe can recruit and establish a Poly pipeline. They'd need to underpay him a bit and bring in a DC and OC as he's never been either (and Leach never had an OC), but this is something I'd look at.

McElwain is a good coach, and regionally rooted, but I wonder if he can attract enough talent.

Lastly, could they bring in a Defensive minded coach (like Grinch) and hand the offense over to a young understudy of Leach? Probably not, as Leach really never groomed anyone while at WSU, he sort of kept it all to himself.

Leach entertains me.

He also wins. Yeah, there are the inexplicable losses to FCS teams and failures to close out games (due to the style).

But he also runs an outlier offensive system he is a complete master of, so he'll also achieve upset wins and win more often than not against the teams he matches up pretty evenly with.

My concern in the SEC is on whether the style works there. Kind of like how Spurrier's national championship winning offense at Florida failed in the NFL because of lack of balance and with protection schemes that didn't work against a certain level of DL talent. For the same reasons that UW owned WSU, I could see the more physical teams with great DLs in the SEC laying some abuse on Leach's MSU.

He hit the JUCO circuit hard, which means lots of 3 to play 2 and 2 to play 2 guys, that strongly impacted their performance, IIRC. Those folks in turn cause the roster turnover pretty rapidly when the next coach can't fill in the gaps.

That seems like a pretty underwhelming hire for a top 3 Pac 12 team.

Donovan is quite a downgrade from Petersen in terms of play calling. Oregon is positioning itself to take back the PAC 12 North from UDub.

James Franklin ran Donovan off and had much better success with Joe Moorhead as his OC.

McElwain may be a good long term fit but that would hurt early on. Talk about the complete opposite offense

Petersen has not called plays for quite awhile (Washington really underachieved on offense his last few years there) and Oregon has taken the North back already.

Washington hired their OC today. Nothing special at first glance, but not terrible either.
"Donovan was the OC at Vanderbilt from 2011-13, then OC at Penn St from 2014-15. Here are the S&P+ offensive rankings of those teams:
  • Vandy 2011: #64
  • Vandy 2012: #70
  • Vandy 2013: #65
  • PennSt 2014: #110
  • PennSt 2015: #71 (Fired)"
Penn State fans don't have a whole lot of positive things to say:

That's a yikes from me, dawg.

That's fair.

In light of that, maybe we might want to reconsider Jay Johnson hire overall? (Similar circumstances with a defensive-minded head coach)

I'd say they're pretty similar, and I was not a fan of that hire for CU, let alone a supposed Pac-12 power. Maybe Lake doesn't have much pull either and the image and financial strength of the Pac-12 is suffering. I get the idea with both is they have significant experience and are well-versed in the system they want to run, I'm sure there's some comfort in that for a first time HC, but that seems like a trap in these scenarios when there's really nothing that blows you away about their resumes. Cristobal, after all, entrusted his D to a G5 DC after letting Leavitt go and it paid off.

I'd give Johnson benefit of the doubt, right now. Let's see what he can do with a real QB; one he's trained. And an OL not spoiled by too many years of "Ansel" Adams.

I don’t think anyone is begrudging Johnson for our 5th Senior QB and OL’s shortcomings that, IMO, contributed more to a lackluster offense than his playcalling or scheme, but there were multiple games where the decision on strategy and playcalling on offense were head scratching.

My problem with this, besides besmirching a true American treasure, is you've already excused poor to mediocre performance, not just for last year, but for next year too. He won't a have a "real QB" that "he's trained" next year, after all, no true freshmen can be considered "trained," and "everyone knows" it takes more than 2 years to build an OL properly.

So we won't get to "really" judge his performance until after 2021 - which is ridiculous.

How about this: he had a below average performance in 2019. If 2020 is another mediocre at best season, we need to make a change.

Well, there seems to be a disconnect on the QBs. They never even bothered really to get looks at the backups, which naturally led to most people believing there was some plan to bring in an outside veteran. Yet we are heading into spring with Lytle, Stenstrom, and Lewis as the only QBs and there is no indication that a grad transfer was ever a serious consideration. So it does beg the question why Montez was given free rein.

I'm surprised somebody hasn't put this together-Washington's OC gig is a fairly attractive coordinator gig.....could Lake have been turned down by sexier candidates?
